How to make sure I don't miss posts from low volume communities?
I subscribe to really many communities to always have some new content to look at. I also have some communities which I'm particularly interested in which sadly are quite low volume like !korea@lemmy.funami.tech !vaeter@feddit.org and !piefed_meta@piefed.social The problem is now that I most of the time miss posts from those communities because they are such low volume.
In Mastodon I have the same problem, but there I was able to create a new column which I call Homies and it shows posts from a list of manually selected users from whom I don't want to miss any post.
I was thinking that something like that would be interesting to have, like we have the filters "Subscribed", "Local", "Popular", "All" I would imagine a "Favorites" one which would show only the posts from my favorite communities.
As a workaround for now I am letting PieFed to notify me of new posts in the four communities so I don't miss anything. How do you guys deal with this problem?

Testing from piefed.lerman-development.com
This is in the "Hello World" category.
In preparation for opening my own PieFed server, today I got a test server running, piefed.lerman-development.com. This is my first post from my test instance to a remote instance. I hope it works. Apologies for the test post.
I'm still working out some issues (PieFed logo doesn't appear, can't enable markdown editor) and I still need to do more configuration, but I think it's getting there. I also don't know how anything is supposed to work, which makes testing a bit difficult.
Eventually, I plan to bring feddit.online back as a PieFed instance (it used to be a KBIN instance).
My user name on pifed.social is Jerry@Piefed.social.

Posting a Federation test
Sorry to be posting tests. I find it annoying when people do this too.
I'm testing the federating of posts when using a direct mention to Mastodon, Friendica and MBIN.
Mastodon: @Jerry@hear-me.social Friendica: @Jerry@my-place.social MBIN: @Jerry_L@fedia.io

Would it be possible to add an option disabling keyboard shortcuts?
Firefox user here.
I was a bit surprised when I tried to get to the URL bar / search with Ctrl+L / Ctrl+K that those browser hotkeys were captured by PIeFed. I think it's nice to have keyboard shortcuts for those who prefer them, but it should probably be something that can be toggled off, or perhaps even opt-in by default.
Thanks for your time.

What do these symbols mean?
I see next to my name a circle thing. Like a loading circle, except it doesn't spin, and all the ticks are lit up.
What is that?
I've also seen next to other users two symbols of an exclamation point inside a red triangle. Like a warning. But what's it mean?

One of the reasons I joined piefed was I was told I could use this as an account that federates with peertube. Can someone point me in the right direction on how I do that?
I've never used peertube, and don't have a seperate account. I'm under the impression that I can use THIS account as my peertube account. I just have no idea how that works.

Trying to add remote community, getting an error.
Trying to add !askjesus@hilariouschaos.com so I can subscribe to it from this account, and I get this message:
>An unexpected error has occurred
>Sorry for the inconvenience! Please let us know about this, so we can repair it and make PieFed better for everyone.
I figure this is the place to do that?

Ok to set up shop on piefed.social?
I should have thought to ask this earlier, sorry. This is only the beta test of the software, and I just recently noticed the instance isn't super active so far. It occurred to me that maybe y'all aren't ready for anyone to treat this as home just yet? Will we be overtaxing the system if we post/subscribe too much, or have to worry about all our stuff disappearing from breaking updates/migration/etc? It's such a nice platform I just started moving right in without thinking about it!

How do you view communities in "gallery mode"?
I want to view !filmpostersporn@lemmy.world and !albumartporn@lemmy.world in "gallery mode" like !memes@lemmy.world for example, how do I go about doing that?

How do I get languages other than English into the database?
I've installed PyFedi and did the things outlined in the INSTALL.txt
bash flask db migrate flask init-db
Now when I add communities or posts, English is the only option for language. And I've looked into the PostgreSQL database... It's just two rows in the
language
table, Undetermined and English.Did I do something wrong? Is that supposed to happen? How can I add all the other languages, because on piefed.social there is a long list of options available.

Change site icon
When I go to Admin -> Site Profile -> Icon and choose a .webp or a .png picture and click the Save button at the bottom, I get a message at the top Settings saved. but the Icon is not changed anywhere. Not in the top left, not the favicon and so on. Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding the functionality?

Reputation? Content of newly added communities? Language setting? Topics? Creating a post in the wrong community?
Hello, i am just having a look around piefed. I was surprised to find out that my main account has a low rep. It wasn't easy to find another person with low rep, actually only was able to find one other after briefly looking for it. Now i am kind of offended, haha.
I added some communities. When i added !birding@lemmy.world and !bicycles@lemmy.ca the communities were empty. I guess that is as expected, since the federation only starts from now on i guess? For some reason though, when i added !bicycle_touring@lemmy.world it shows all the posts, just no comments and no votes. How did this happen? Same for the !camping@sh.itjust.works comm.
I wonder how communities end up in topics? Where is this being curated?
It would be nice if there was a language setting for the piefed UI. I guess it is just going by browser default? I could not find an issue regarding this at codeberg. Maybe i just didn't find the setting and it's there?
I tried posting this topic a few minutes ago, to the piefed help comm. While viewing the piefed help comm i clicked "create post" and typed along. After sending, i realized that piefed created the post in !fediverse@lemmy.world. I think that happened because i had not yet subscribed to the piefed help comm. That was very confusing, pretty sure it also only said "fediverse" in the commuinity field, which is also a bit too little information maybe, could have been fediverse@anyotherinstan.ce too. That was a bit awkward.
Piefed looks pretty cool though, i like it!

Moderation tools for communities?
Hi all,
First of all thanks for the great work. It is really nice to see a project in a language I understand :) Also, I'm very grateful for the video walkthrough of the codebase!
Anyhow, before I did a local install I thought of trying the online version and poke around a little to understand the features. I made a community for the sake of testing (https://piefed.social/c/trolley_problems) but it won't let me use the "moderate" or "settings" functions. Is that because my account is new?

Article sharing on mastodon
Hello I can't share articles on my https://mastodon.social and https://mastodon.tn profile is there a specific action?
-
Two questions
1- Is it possible to search communities?
I mean as in typing the communities' names or the topic they're based around in a search bar. I don't seem to find it.
2- IS there a way to add Alt Text to profile pictures/avatars and banners?

Does PieFed work with client apps like Memmy?
I'm trying to add my PieFed account to Memmy (an iOS Lemmy client). I was able to add my midwest.social account as expected.
Does anyone use PieFed with client apps?

Account creation / joining communities from elsewhere?
I just tried to create an account,
JoeGermuska
but got an error that the username was in use.Today is the first I've heard of PieFed but before I tried to make that, I joined the meta community as https://midwest.social/u/JoeGermuska -- I wonder if that had anything to do with it?
Also, while my subscription from that account is no longer pending, there are no posts showing. But it's only been 5-10 minutes so maybe that's just how federation works?
