Set Notification icon to only show dot when there are notifications?

I am trying to get the notification icon on the task bar to only show the little dot when there actually are notifications. At the moment it shows the dot whether there are notifications or not:

As you can see the bell icon displays a dot even though there are no notifications. Can I somehow change that to only show a badge when there actually are notifications?

I don't have a dot at all. And if I set it in the sys tray to only show when relevant, then it is actually one if not the only one that actually hides itself when there's no new notification. Assuming that's a standard KDE panel.
