SD Gundam Over Galaxian – Hardcore Gaming 101
Galaxian is a proto-shmup to be sure, but I thought this was an interesting obscurity. Not surprised we didn't get this over here, since I'm pretty sure Gundam was relatively unheard-of back when this got made.

Compile, one of the greatest developers of shoot 'em ups, closed its doors 20 years ago this month. Let's look back on its 20 best shmups.
You might be able to tell, but the Aleste series is one of my all-time favorite series, and thus Compile is one my favorite studios. Turns out Paste magazine of all things has a run down of what they consider the 20 "best" Compile shmups. But I think they're all good!
Homura - a bullet hell stranded on the PS2
One of those shmups that isn't available on western digital storefronts -- and in fact doesn't seem to have any non-PS2 ports at all -- Homura is an interesting "flying person" type shmup (kind of like Castle of Shikigami).
Vertical Shooters for the NES
This is my run down of all of the vertical shmups for the NES.
A list of vert shmups on the NES I stumbled across. The author notes if rapid fire default, whether there's checkpoints, and whether they think the difficulty curve reasonable. I thought it was interesting.
