Kindle's are currently about 30% off on Amazon's websites. Seems to be every model in all colors and variations. The deals are for Prime members only, but you might be eligible to try Prime for free.

The deals are at least on amazon.com, amazon.co.uk and amazon.de.

  • Would also be great if the new comments would be highlighted.

  • Does plus addresses help circumvent that? I think most email providers supports plus addressing (also known as sub-addressing). You can add plus sign and any string before the at sign. For example: youremail+lemmyaccount1@email.com. The string between plus and at signs can be anything, and all these addresses points to your normal inbox with the added benefit that you can filter them into different folders.

PS. Lemmy version 0.18.2 was released today. It fixes the vulnerability and has some other improvements as well.

  • Also be wary when using apps and especially when enabling push notifications. Lemmy API currently lacks any kind of support for partial access to an account (unless this has changed recently). So, apps cannot, for example, get read only access to your account's inbox. Apps can get either no access or full access. When you sign up for push notifications, an authentication token is stored to the push notification server which gives full access to your account to who ever happens to get their hand on that token. If there, for example, happens to be a security vulnerability on the push notification server, it might leak those tokens.

If you have enabled push notifications on some Lemmy app, and want to invalidate the token, you can just change your password.

  • Can a Lemmy instance be configured to only permanently store posts made by users on the local instance, and posts to communties that are on the local instance?
  • As far as I know Lemmy stores only text locally and images and such will be linked to the external instance. Text doesn't use much disk space, so that shouldn't be a big a problem. Sometimes when you browse Lemmy, you notice posts that have broken links to images. It's because the other instance is down, but you can still see the text portion of the posts on your home instance.

  • Can we talk about porn on Lemmy?
  • There's also pornlemmy.com. You don't need to be logged in to view posts and there's no anime/hentai or aigen stuff.

  • Firmware 5.16.2.1 (June 2023)
  • Kindle updates are always slow. Can take months to receive an update. You can download the file, put it to the root folder of your Kindle and restart your Kindle to update it.

  • Firmware 5.16.2.1 (June 2023)

There's a new firmware for Kindles from 7th gen Paperwhite to the newest Kindle basic. Newest firmware for Scribe is 5.16.2 (May 2023).

Release notes are very short and very generic:

    > Version 5.16.2.1 – June 2023 > >Here's what's new: > >Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

Not listed in release notes, but there is now a button for annotations, that I don't think were there before.

Have you noticed any other changes or improvements?

r/BotDefense is shutting down - I hope Reddit likes spam and malicious actors
  • Did you just ask that has Reddit ever given anything back to their volunteers, besides sticks, rocks and ill will?

  • Kbin.social upgrade
  • Both kbin and Lemmy are reddit-like content/link aggregators. Kbin combines content aggregation with twitter-like microblogging.

  • Favourite Discworld adaptations
  • Hogfather has a two part TV movie adaptation. It's pretty good, I think. But it's a Christmas movie, so I don't know if you want to watch it middle of summer.

It's available on YouTube, but split to four parts for some reason: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcGPPeBbIv0KY_r7QS_a5c_A0uX19pMhB

  • Comments missing pics
  • It's all inline images. I assume the devs haven't implemented image markdown yet.

  • reddit sucks
  • Lemmy uses exclamation mark for communities to distinguish them from users: !community@instance vs @user@instance.

  • reddit sucks
  • but have yet to figure out how to get mentions like @weirdwriter@tweesecake.social to work.

When you type @-symbol and then at least two characters, a small pop-up thingy appears after a second or few. It should appear above the word you are writing, but at least for me it appears at the top of the screen so that more than half of it is above top edge of the screen. And if the list is short enough, it won't even be visible without scrolling the page up. My instance is running 0.18.1 release candidate, so it might be a bug in that.

That pop-up thingy lists all the users that matches what you have so far written. For example, if you type @we, words like power and Sweden are matches, because there's "we" in them. You can use up and down arrows to select the user you want, and then autocomplete the link with enter. It won't help you to autocomplete the link if you copy-paste the full user name. To autocomplete copy-pasted name, you need to delete the whole instance part of it and the last character of the user name. Then type the last character you just deleted, and the pop-up appears with only one choice - unless that user name exists on more than one instance. If you type the second @ for the instance part, the pop-up disappears, so you cannot narrow the list to only one user in those cases where the user name exists in more than one instance.

  • How do you brew your loose leaf tea? Have you tried a gaiwan?
  • That's similar to this all in one tea brewer:

Glass tea brewer pitcher where leaves are in the top compartment and tea liquor in the bottom compartment

You put the leaves in to the top compartment. Add some water, and when the tea is ready, you press the button at the top to let the tea liquor fall to the lower compartment.

  • How do you brew your loose leaf tea? Have you tried a gaiwan?
  • I actually meant this Hario Glass Jumping Teapot:

Hario Glass Jumping Teapot. A medium sized round glass teapot with golden metal mesh filter inside the pot in the spout

But as said, images are deceiving, and it turns out that that pot comes as 500ml and 800ml variations. Hario Europe doesn't seem to sell small teapots anymore, but some vendors might have other, smaller, models.

  • I fell for that too
  • Not an audio engineer, but I had unshielded (thin) cables in my home speaker setup. If the cables were positioned correctly, everything was fine. Accidentally move them even a little, and there'd be a huge amount of noise, due to power cables going near the speaker cables. Switched to shielded (thick) cables, and there's no noise ever.

  • How do you brew your loose leaf tea? Have you tried a gaiwan?
  • That pot also seems to force larger brews.

Pictures are deceiving, and I didn't specify the size. It's 180ml teapot. It's called Hario Asian teapot. I think it's discontinued, but there's a newer model which has a metal fine mesh filter instead of that metal spiral. Fill it to the bottom of the spout and it's about 100ml, which is great for gong fu brewing. Fill up to the bottom of the lid and it's 180ml. But yea... after I got my gaiwan, I haven't used it.

  • How do you brew your loose leaf tea? Have you tried a gaiwan?
  • I too use a gaiwan. When I got in to gong fu brewing, I first bought a glass teapot that has a metal strainer in the spout.

Small round glass teapot with a metal strainer in the spout (Hario Asian Teapot)

While it's nice to look at while your leaves brews inside it, it's somewhat annoying to use and clean. The strainer let's small bits through, so you need some kind of filter unless you like those leaf bits in your cup. Small leaf pieces gets stuck in the metal strainer. The spout is so narrow you need some kind of tool to clean it. The lid is annoying to clean. And because it's glass, you see any stains that forms over time. Stains can be removed, but it takes some extra effort.

Gaiwan on the other has so simple form that it's super easy to clean. Most of the leaves will fall off when you turn it upside down and give it a shake. The rest you can dig out with your fingers. You can also see the leaves because the opening is so wide, and it let's you "play" with the leaves using the lid. You can, for example, move the leaves around so that they will steep more evenly.

It takes a while to learn to use gaiwan properly. It might burn your fingers. You will most certainly spill the tea all over the place. But once you get the hang of it, it's a really nice way to make tea.

  • New to the world of teas!
  • This is a good article: The Non-Judgmental Guide to Getting Seriously Into Tea

You should try different types of teas. Teas are classified into 6 categories: White, green, yellow, black, oolong and post-fermented (also known as puer or puerh). Puerh is further divided into ripe (shu) and raw (sheng) puerh. Also teas from different countries have their own characteristics. Try them all, and find your favorites.

Supermarket teas, whether teabags or loose leaf, aren't very good in general. Of course, there are exceptions, and if flavored teas is what you like, there's plenty of those in markets. But if you want good loose leaf teas, you need to buy from tea shops. Here's a long list of online tea shops around the world. You can use the search feature to filter the list. If you, for example, want to find shops that sell teaware and are based in United Kingdom, you can search for "teaware kingdom".

If you want to buy teaware, a good rule for what to buy is this: Spend the money on tea instead. Don't buy some crazy expensive clay pots, when a simple porcelain gaiwan (cup with a lid) does the job perfectly.

  • New Mlem for Lemmy TestFlight beta (version 0.2.0(30)) with improved VoiceOver

We’ve got another MASSIVE update for you all, packed with new features, bug fixes, interface tweaks, quality-of-life improvements, and other surprises! We’ve all worked very ha...

A new beta of Mlem for Lemmy was released on 2023-07-02. Among many other improvements, it has greatly improved VoiceOver support. But there are also the following known issues:

    • Large posts will prevent scrolling by using left and right gestures with VoiceOver
    • Unable to navigate to a community from a post with VoiceOver

You can read all the details from their announcement post.

You can download the update from TestFlight. Remember that there are two separate TestFlight betas. The first ended when there was a change in the development team and won't be updated anymore. If you are in that beta, you need to join the new beta to get the new update.

    ELI5 Reddit to Lemmy
  • Use your instance's search feature. You can search

    • Name of community: No Stupid Questions
    • By using !community@instance syntax: !nostupidquestions@lemmy.world
    • URL of the community: https://lemmy.world/c/nostupidquestions

First option won't work if your instance hasn't federated the community yet. The last option is best in my opinion.
