What your coffee preparation method says about you
  • I use Fedora and sometimes Debian (Debian is love! šŸŒ€ā¤ļø), and brew my coffee in a moka pot.

  • I'm a little desperate and I think going to Reddit will help, but I also feel kind of sick just thinking about it. I know that's silly, but I do. Would I be a massive hypocrite or is it justified?
  • You're doing it right. Don't desperate, mate. Most companies are permanently understaffed but management and hr drag their feet as much as they can, and then it's all a rush. So at the end it's a lottery. It sounds like you have quite the portfolio too so put it onto as many faces as you can and the calls and mails will come (and the spam! Use an alias, or a specific address unless you trust they're not gonna sell it). You've got this.

  • I don't know if reddit is the best place for job hunting, you might get better luck on LinkedIn most likely, but I'd personally try everything if I were in a dire situation.

Just a couple questions, how long have you been job hunting? How many applications have you put out? In a post in that sub someone is complaining about not getting any answer after '50 applications in a month', another one is already in despair after '4 days'... don't get me wrong, I know how soul crushing job hunting is but it is a numbers game you can't throw the towel after four bloody days ffs! 50 applications is just a good Tuesday, I've got calls more than a year after applying for a position...

Another question you should ask yourself is whether you are an expat or a migrant. Main difference between these is that migrants usually don't see driving an Uber, laying bricks or serving tables as below them.

Anyway best of lucks and welcome to this side of the pond!

Ps: Oh! Also: wages! Their not American wages, CoL is lower but not by that much (some things like electronics, cars, gas.. are in fact more expensive). A waiter in America (specially CA, I think I've read your from LA) makes more than most engineers here in Europe.

  • Trump voters said they were angry about the economy ā€“ many of them had a point
  • So let me get this straight.. telling people who are struggling financially and can barely make ends meet 'No you aren't! You're just too stupid and uncultured to understand these numbers!' doesn't get you their vote and even can make them vote for the other guy!? Who would have thunk!

  • US Efforts to Contain Xiā€™s Push for Tech Supremacy Are Faltering
  • So the bad guys here are the ones preventing others to use their research... right?

  • The democrats did this to themselves
  • I don't think anyone is asking for perfection just basic human decency, but I guess that's like asking for a thousand talking unicorns in politics.

  • I'm sure people that base their lives on pissing people off and shitting on others will be satisfied now...
  • I definitely blame the democrats. They're the ones that have put Trump in the White House twice. I'm not talking of 'letting it happen', the dnc have actively done everything in their hands to make him president both times.

Edit: If you can't, or don't want to see it I'm not gonna try to convince you. This meme over here speaks volumes by itselfā€“ the dems not just can't reach the blue collar workers, who should be their main demographics, they've alienated, and even antagonized them to the point that many voted for Trump (I'm not saying this is a sane reaction! But people would grasp to straws). So yeah the 'insufferable tubs of shit' are the working people not the billionaire owners of the party.

  • This is how much sugar you are [possibly] eating.
  • Yes just a pinch, only if necessary. The second one says 'no sugar added' so it might as well be the sugars from all the ingredients.

  • This is how much sugar you are [possibly] eating.
  • This is good advice. And also carrots.

  • This is how much sugar you are [possibly] eating.
  • It's pretty common to add a bit of sugar to tomato sauce tho.

  • What is the argument for making poor/working class folks shoulder the burden of taxes?
  • Don't be fooled, taxes are just a way to extract the fruit of the poor folks' labor and give it to the rich and powerful. Always have been, since their inception. Not just in America, here in the (highly idealized by lemmy) EU I cost my company 3200ā‚¬ a month, 1850ā‚¬ go to my bank account and 1350ā‚¬ to the government, plus up to a 21% vat from the things I purchase. Amazon pays literally 0ā‚¬ in taxes.

  • What is your favorite inconsequential fan theory?
  • I always thought that about Jessica Fletcher. Too many people dying around that woman.

  • Cory hot take.
  • In the privacy of your home? Like a civilized person.

  • Someone's lying
  • Light emitted farther than 46 billion light years away will never reach you. While traveling an infinite distance the universe expands faster, and light emitted not that far will get so red-shifted that it won't be visible anymore.

  • Is it true you work well under pressure? IS IT?! [Comiclicious]
  • As I said I never put it in my cv, because I know what it implies. In my country we have a similar thing with English proficiency, everyone would put 'mid level English' which actually means 'barely able to order at a restaurant while pointing to things with your finger'.

  • Is it true you work well under pressure? IS IT?! [Comiclicious]
  • I mean I've never put it in my resume and I work better in a healthy environment, but under stressful and chaotic circumstances I perform much much better than most.

My secret: I'm always super anxious, you can throw all the chaos you want my way and it'll barely move the stress-o-meter needle a bit.

  • Police want the password to your phone
  • You literally said 'that doesn't encrypt your storage'. I've read some other comments of yours about it being decrypted after entering a pin or passwords in memory...that's not how it works (again at least in iOS), it's managed by hardware. Basically a chip enters your password for you. So no, an attacker can't access your storage, it's still encrypted, or your password that easily.

  • Police want the password to your phone
  • iOS encrypts the storage by default. Don't know about android but I'm sure if not by default it can be enabled.

  • Police seize bag with "Definitely not full of drugs" printed on it...
  • Was it the smarter cop that thought the inscription was a lie? Or was it the dumber cop that just couldn't read?

On a note I've had a scale similar to the small one for like twenty years, mine still have the lid and all. Batteries last forever. 10/10 would recommend.

  • Abandon Harris endorses Green Party's Jill Stein
  • The only realistic option is to try and change the stance of one of the two that can win the election

How would you propose to do that while also offering said party an unconditional vote? I'm not American, but if you have an answer it would be useful here too. Parliamentary systems end up pretty much the same.
