  • Not to hate because we're still enjoying it, but does anyone else feel like the show generally fails to capture this kind of feeling from the comic? I feel like the comic does a great job of pointing out the sheer absurdity of so much human activity, while the show seems to be more of a generic sitcom with strangely-dictating aliens instead of humans.

  • Rudy Giuliani made desperate appeal to Trump to pay his legal bills in Mar-a-Lago meeting
  • Rudy has gained huge amounts in the shadows that we have not ever heard about. His accounts in Lichtenstein and the Caymans are probably pretty fat and happy these days, and not even RICO can touch that. I wouldn't count on this being anything other than more distraction.

  • Would We Recognize Extraterrestrial Technology If We Saw It?
  • It's about Oumuamua, a somewhat mysterious object that passed through the solar system very close to Earth, before seemingly changing direction of its own accord and accelerating back out of the solar system. One of the many recent possibly-alien events that have people excited lately. Scientific theory is that it was a long, thin asteroid, similar to a turd, that expelled gases once it was close enough to the sun that propelled it away. Our sensor data indicated Oumuamua was incredibly dense and rich in heavy metals, more than we could reasonably even detect, so it had scientists intrigued.

  • Ancient XCOM wisdom
  • Start by regularly assuming that a 95% chance has a near 0% likelihood.

Then, allow yourself to become reliant on soldiers that you spend a huge amount of time training and equipping, and then accept them being insta'd during some random mission which softlocks you from progressing in the game because now all you have are recruits with garbage gear who get eaten alive in seconds.

Lastly, discover a desire to punch Sid Meier in the face.

That was my experience with XCOM, at least.

  • Expandable pictures and gifs?
  • Huh. I have not modified my kbin in any way, shape, or form, just opened the desktop site on Firefox. I was assuming you needed scripts to make it more user-friendly, honestly, but it seems alright.

  • Expandable pictures and gifs?

Is there a style that allows for pop out pictures and gifs without opening the actual post? I generally prefer just expanding images rather than opening up a link to see them. Lemmyworld and other instances seem to have that available. Anyone know if there's a way to do that with kbin?

EDIT: I just couldn't see a button that wasn't part of a thumbnail, apparently.

UFO hearings: whistleblower David Grusch says ‘non-human biologics’ found at alleged crash sites – as it happened
  • Well, I posted a fun write up here in the comments about why this is cool and what we should really expect from this, ince a lot of people are uncertain about anything going on here being important or even new. Spent like an hour and a half on it, since I've been following this topic closely for my own entertainment for a while now. Thanks for apparently losing it in transit, kbin.

    What's new:

The military released videos some years back it claims are of unknown technology, and are doubling down that the videos are real. The most substantial of these are the GIMBAL video from the Nimitz Incident (Fravor's testimony) and the Mosul orb (which has no attached testimony).

Years after the videos were released, David Grusch and the others are using a new whistleblower hotline that was started very recently. Grusch claims that he's been waiting in the wings for years for just this opportunity, as he has learned of heinous crimes being committed against the American people.

Matt Gaetz, putting politics cautiously aside, just stated on official record that he directly saw evidence of UAPs that has been hidden by the government. This means people that actually have something to lose are coming forward and making extraordinary claims.

    The truth:

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and all whistleblowers involved readily admit they only have hearsay to bring to the table. None of them witnessed any real evidence first-hand in a substantial fashion, they mostly are sharing stories they were told by supposed first-hand witnesses. Grusch claims he knows a number of specific names and places, but he's not telling the public and has further stated he will lie to the public to protect himself. Nothing else has been confirmed, and all videos and images released to the public are blurry and inconclusive.

    What we can hope for:

    Let's see them aliens already.

    What we should hope for:

Investigations into the trillions of dollars "lost" by the Pentagon. Some accountability would be fantastic.

    What we will probably get:

    [REDACTED]

  • Watch Live: UFO hearing underway as House panel pushes for more transparency
  • Cool that such striking testimonies were entered into official record. Future investigations should continue to be interesting, and it's always good to see bipartisan support anywhere in congress. UFOs/UAPs are a fun topic, even if there are still likely terrestrial explanations such as adversarial weapons we don't know about.

  • Wat dey doin ova der
  • I browse on desktop, therefore at this point in time, I use kbin. All other UIs I've found in the fediverse are pretty bad by comparison. Way too much garbage on the screen on most of them, and lemmy.world has an auto-updating scroll that you can't disable that I suspect is also a memory leak.
