[Off my chest] My asexuality + disability has ruined my life and I don't know what to do
  • I...just...wow.

I wish I had something comforting to say. It is terrible that you have had to suffer this way. I can only offer you an anonymous e-hug. 🫂

  • but always follow the rules!
  • You are instantly sexier for good basic security practices. To a certain crowd, anyway.

  • Remember:
  • Because it's been a while since I've seen a reference to the teleportation paradox, obligatory NFB cartoon link: https://youtu.be/ocgFkHElzgQ
(Or if you prefer, and are able, to watch on the NFB website directly) https://www.nfb.ca/film/to_be/

  • What do you think got way too much hate than it should've?
  • Real talk - as a balding dude, there was a time when I was part of a bonus structure program, and I half-jokingly started looking at hair systems. Not because I'm balding and ashamed of it, whatever, but I missed being able to style my hair in a way that looked good. That, and I loved the idea of showing up to work with a whole head of hair, refusing to acknowledge it aside from saying I got a haircut. 'Cause that shit would've been hilarious.

Ultimately decided against it, too much $ for vanity and a joke versus sensible balding guy haircuts/the occasional clear cut.

  • Ukrainian boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko calls out Rogan for ‘repeating Russian propaganda’
  • Man, has Dave Foley done anything really clearly, publically untoward (aside from the child support stuff, which as described in Wikipedia at least makes some sense. It's been settled since)?

He is one of my Canadian comedy idols - to the point that if I ever saw him in public, I would actively avoid him to not risk destroying that if he is, in actuality, a piece of shit.

  • Donald Trump vows to impose 25% tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico
  • Fair, though I would say the rhetoric was such that politicians more in line with Trump ideals got a boost from the more targeted messaging to Americans. Don't think it was the primary target, obvs, but I don't think it's purely incidental.

I may be wrong, but in a different social climate I feel we could've had Erin O'Toole instead of Lil' PP as the leader of the CPC into the upcoming election, which (strong fuck the CPC in general feelings aside) I'd be less unimpressed with. A lot of energy has been devoted to catering to far-right voters, and that is in no small part to sentiments which crossed the border (though to be realistic, definitely not the only factor at play here).

  • Longest walks
  • I'd argue that if it's conceived of as a journey with a set end point - "I'm going to walk from Vancouver to Toronto", by way of example - you could consider it a single walk. If you're just walking everyday without a set end point in mind, I'd agree with you.

Maybe 'journey by foot' is the better phrase here, idk.

  • Self perception
  • Great, now it's time for me to listen to this on repeat for the rest of the week. Again.

    Edit: Now you're a man, a

  • Self perception
  • I was just born with a heart filled with neutrality.

Tell my wife I said hello.

  • Lemmings, how good or bad would you decribe your ability to remember things?
  • The best way to test this is to take a break. The first thing I notice, after about 2 weeks (YMMV), is my memory seems to improve dramatically. That and my perception of time seems to change - in general, things move slower/more sensory information fills the same amount of time - which I think is related to memory.

Now, the question becomes: Is that purely because I stopped smoking weed, or because I'm having a comparatively novel experience of my day to day activities - where the salience of things in your environment increases, which means it's easier to form and recall a memory of them? Or is it just that I'm eating better, getting more exercise, etc. as means to distract from wanting to smoke in the early break stages?

No idea. All I know is it's pretty sweet until (for me, at max so far) six months out when smoking seems like a great idea again.

  • If elon musk (or any far-right billionaire) bought Reddit, do you think there will be a mass exodus to alternatives like Lemmy, similar to the twitter exodus to Bluesky?
  • The only thing I really miss about Reddit is subredditsimulator. At least then, you know for a fact that it's all bots, and is to be consulted sheerly for entertainment value.

  • Lemmings, how good or bad would you decribe your ability to remember things?
  • Longish term cannabis dependency chiming in - not great.

  • I am a very liberal person and I have very liberal children, except for one. I'm pretty sure my Gen Z son has been taken in by fascist doctrine. What can I get him for Christmas?
  • Reading through the comments here, I would say a gift certificate or membership to some activity they've expressed interest in. Ideally, something physical, that either involves working/playing/whatever with other people, or which has a social element to it.

My biased selection would be rock climbing if this is of some interest and you have a climbing gym that isn't a giant pain to access (which you might not). Solo sport, but a) you need a belayer - that was my Dad when I was doing it, and b) the gym rats I've come across are often very friendly, open people.

Can be as challenging as you make it, gets you talking with IRL people, opportunity for what sounds like really necessary quality time going up there, if he gets into bouldering or makes a gym buddy and can get there himself he can eventually do it independently, etc.

Might make sense for them, might not - only you would know, really.

  • Enough wiggle room where it would not be considered a credible threat. There's a compilation video of statements he made on livestreams but I don't want to link to Twitter, and can't find it elsewhere quickly. It's discussed in the following article re: the Emergencies Act inquiry, among others - https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/emergencies-act-inquiry-hears-from-protester-pat-king-freedom-convoy-lawyer-1.6135959

  • Tell me you weren't here without telling me you weren't here. Their right to protest was never in question. There is no attendant right to restrict the movements of residents leaving their homes for necessities, psychologically torture residents with blaring horns at all hours, harrass staff at restaurants and soup kitchens, and so on.

I basically had to evacuate my kid when they first rolled into the mall nearby, because screaming at a bunch of teenagers working a fucking food kiosk about mask policies (along with some lovely racial epithets to the black and indian kids) is apparently good praxis.

Once the trucks were finally cleared, no one said they had to stop protesting. Quite a few didn't, actually. I don't agree with those people, but I can respect them for a commitment to their stupid beliefs and almost willful ignorance of Canadian governmental structure when not holding residents hostage.

You want real heros? Look at the people who organized deliveries of food and necessary goods to people who couldn't get out of the core. Look at The Battle of Billing's Bridge, when we decided no one was coming to help and enough was enough. Look anywhere but the direction of this two-bit timbit terrorist.

What's the strangest thing you've brought home from the bar?

I write this with homemade maple jalapeno cornbread in my mouth, gifted to me by the bar staff at my local pub this evening. This is simultaneously the best and most unexpected thing I've ever brought home from a bar, my significant other excepted.

This got me thinking: what is the weirdest thing you've brought home from the bar, Lemmy?

    Cipher Sunday!

Tired of Wordle? Sick of feeling stupid at the behest of the NYT crossword editor? Looking for anything new to enjoy with your Sunday coffee other than chatting with your loved ones/cat/the void? This is the post for you!

There's all sorts of codes and ciphers in the Gravity Falls world. Why not take some time to try and solve them yourself? You could just look up answers in Google, but where's the fun in that?

What you should Google is 'gravity falls cipher keys'. Give it an honest try yourself, then come back to share your answer!

Today's selection comes from the depths of thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com. Assuming I'm arsed to do this again, future selections may come from there, the Book of Bill, Journal 3, the show itself, or maybe something custom! Have fun!

    thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com theories

Sup, folks who have woken up to this community based (seemingly) on my two pictures of everyone's favourite pandimensional equilateral pal today?

For those who don't know, there's another possible cipher hunt ARG going on right now. You should buy the Book of Bill (our dorito overlord commands it!), but the website of interest is thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com. Check it out!

Anyone have any theories about all of this? Right now, mine are:

    1. There's going to be a movie, set one summer after season 2. I'm very skeptical of season 3 being a thing, but could totally see a movie or at least a long special on Disney+ happening.

    2. Someone really, really needs to go back to Confusion Hill in Piercey, CA, ask some questions and post about it somewhere. The map piece under the monitor, that looks suspiciously similar to a puzzle piece, is less ringing bells and more screaming like a disembodied head. Plus even if it turns out to be nothing, it sounds like a nice way to kill a Saturday if you're close enough (cries in Canadian)

    Let's talk about lemmy.ml

Because someone, eventually, is going to make this post anyway, we might as well get it over with. I know someone posted something a week ago, but I feel something a little more neutral would be useful.

There's a lot of talk on lemmy.world right now about lemmy.ml at an instance level (edit: see here: https://sh.itjust.works/post/20400058). A lot of it is very similar to the discussions we've had here before- accusations of ideologically-based censorship, promotion of authoritarian left propaganda, 'tankie-ism', etc. The subject of the admin's, and Lemmy dev's, political beliefs is back up as a discussion point. The word defederation is getting thrown around, and some of our beloved sh.it.heads are part of the conversation.

What do people think about lemmy.ml? Is there evidence that the instance is managed in such a way that it creates problems for Lemmy users, and/or users of sh.itjust.works specifically? Are they problems that extend to the entire instance or primary user base, or are the examples referenced generally limited to specific communities/moderators/users? Are people here, in short, interested in putting federation to lemmy.ml to a vote?

To our admin team and moderators: What are your experiences with lemmy.ml? Have you run into any specific problems with their userbase, or challenges related to our being federated with them?

Full disclosure: I have very little personal stake in this. I don't really engage with posts about international events, I don't share my political beliefs (such as they are) online beyond "Don't be a shitbag, help your fellow human out when you can", and have not run into any of the concerns brought up personally. But I'm also not the kind of user who would butt against this stuff often in the first place.

What I will say is that I have not personally witnessed activites like brigading or promotion of really nasty shit from lemmy.ml. I cannot say this about other instances we defederated from before. But again, this may just be a product of how I use Lemmy, and does not account for the experiences of others.

This is just an opportunity for those who do have strong opinions on this topic to say their piece and, more importantly, share their evidence.

If nothing else, given similar conversations a year ago, this will be an interesting account of what sh.itjust.works looks like today (happy belated cake day everybody!)

    Language Filter?

Final edit: Has nothing to do with specific terms used, this person is correct. Language setting related problem. https://sh.itjust.works/comment/173272

First Edit: Damn, seems to be working fine now. Wonder if it was community-level wherever I tried to post (don't know if language filters can be implemented at that level. Can't remember what I tried to reply to), or if TheDude is updating some stuff and I happened to post at just the wrong time? Or maybe it was a post from another instance?

Second edit: Ahhh, interesting. So it was a reply to https://kbin.social/m/main@sh.itjust.works/p/435069. And the offending word at least seems to be 'Beehaw'. Anyone have any insight re: what's happening here for a mostly Lemmy illiterate sh.it.head?

    Original comment:

Just had a weird experience trying to reply to a post. Is there a language filter now? I used a very soft cuss often spoken in normal discourse (starts with a d, ends with an n, 4 letters) and got an error.

Is someone able to explain the rationale? Maybe it's just me but casual cussing is a) pretty much my default mode, and b) from the outside doesn't seem like a real problem that needs to be addressed. People cuss on the internet. Now, personally not opposed to a filter for clearly derogatory terms (you know what they are, don't @ me), but my recent experience seems a little extreme.

    Upcoming shows calendar?

Anyone know a good website for show (music) dates at the various venues here (particularly for things where a guitar is involved, but open to other stuff too)?

The challenge I've had for a while is this: Bands post stuff in a bunch of places, but if you don't know the band you're unlikely to see it. Venues post upcoming show dates, but if you don't know the venue (or follow all of them) you probably won't see it. Stuff like Apt613 is ok, but kind of limited. By dint of geographical data Facebook captures a lot of events, but Facebook also sucks (one because it's Facebook, two because for some weird reason it may randomly think you're in Toronto if you're out and about, I assume by way of colocation data from invading Torontonians). I flat out refuse to use Twitter. Many have tried to keep up with events in town to maintain a calendar (Covert Ottawa Guy comes to mind, there have been others too), but most have failed or have such a broad focus that things get missed. But I still hold out hope for an indie web solution - some person or group still trying to keep abreast of the scene themselves and tracking what's coming down the pipe.

Does such a thing exist in 2023 for Ottawa? More broadly, how do you folks discover upcoming shows (or events in general) you want to check out?
