What really are the flaws of allowing anyone to euthanize themselves or relatives like we do sick animals?
  • Animals don't euthanize themselves, we do it to them. Dogs/cats don't get depressed and ask to be killed. They aren't cognizant of accruing mountains of medical debt and being a burden on their caretakers. Animals aren't approached with blackmarket offers for their families to be taken care of in exchange for donating their organs. There's also no murder charges for someone making a decision to have a pet put down that other family members don't agree with.

You can't rely on someone who is suffering to make a rational decision about weighing a very permanent choice with the chances of maybe someday getting better. So who do you put the burden of choice on? Doctors? They're already overburdened with too many patients and can't really be expected to spend sufficient time not to mention the burden of wondering if they made the right call and dealing with challenges from family members who will vehemently disagree one way or another. Do you put it on family members? Will they be selfish and override a patient's wishes, or worse can abusers legally kill their victim if they are family? You absolutely don't want insurance finding a way to goad people toward that option by denying approval for anything else.

There's so many questions without agreeable answers. There's no singular party who can be trusted to make such an important decision, and you can't put that kind of liability on healthcare professionals. So the least contentious outcome is to just not allow it.

  • Request: BIFL USB-C Earbuds/DSP IEMs
  • Maybe you'll like them, but moondrops are definitely not bifl. I have a set of CHUs and Arias and I have had serious quality issues with both. The arias have issues with one of the channels drastically dropping in volume intermittently. Swapping the cable and cleaning the eartips did nothing. The Chus have fixed cables that aren't replaceable.

  • Sheet mulching
  • There's another option though. Any paint store/ department sells rolls of plain brown paper for use as a dropcloth. That's what I use instead of cardboard. It's not particularly expensive, and it's as easy to roll out as landscaping fabric.

  • I really want to like Lemmy
  • Thanks for the detailed response. I intentially dehumidify our living spaces so I don't think I have a spot that would match your stated requirements for the time being. I will definitely bookmark your comment in case my dreams of installing a greenhouse come to fruition in the next couple years.

  • Could vanilla orchids do well as a houseplant? I'm zone 7b/8a so I've had success playing around with semi tropical plants, but I don't have greenhouse space to overwinter frost intolerant plants.

  • What's everyone's preferred seed vendor?

Use the map to find a supplier near you that cares about sourcing local milkweed. If they have that priority, chances are they will get a lot of other stuff right too.

I found https://sowtrueseed.com/ through that utility and I've been happy with the seeds and tools I've gotten from them.

I found out our local library has a seed bank. So that's something I will be looking into participating in when it reopens in the spring.

  • Russia ‘fires intercontinental ballistic missile’ at Ukraine for first time
  • Launching just one sounds like the primary purpose is for messaging, not taking out whatever single target. They want to remind Europeans that they aren't safe just because they live far away. The west has been getting numb to the constant threats of using nuclear weapons. I believe this launch is to give those threats more weight again.

The US will no longer be a threat to Russian ambitions come January. Expect an urgent fear campaign to get the rest of NATO to no longer want to stick their necks out for Ukraine.

  • Leak: Valve is making a Steam Controller 2 and a ‘Roy’ for its Deckard
  • Why would they bother making an xbox layout when they've already gone through the effort of making the xbox controllers compatible with games? What advantage would that have over just using an actual xbox controller or one of the numerous generics?

  • Losing bidder seeks to disqualify bid by The Onion in Alex Jones bankruptcy
  • Not quite. Although the "losing bid" here was of a higher payment amount. However, the trustee chose the onion bid because the families who are owed assets out of the settlement were willing to forgo some of the payments they are owed to back the onion bid. That would lead to more being paid back to Jone's creditors than with the straight cash bid.

So it is a bit of a unique situation and the court is right to verify that the trustee made the right call. Ultimately the onion bid should be the winner since bankruptcy proceedings should prioritize paying creditors.

  • America's Next Health Secretary Enjoying A Meal With His Future Boss and Colleagues
  • Would he? I'm terrified of his ability to double down on obvious bullshit even when presented with facts directly countering his claims.

As bad as Trump is, I'm almost more concerned about the people who saw his first clown show and thought either "I have got to get in on this" or " I can use this to accomplish my goals. "
