Bottoms up!
  • Many depressed/suicidal folks often do give themselves to a cause or calling. Depression isn't just the episodic spiral you see portrayed as depression, it's also the hard fought days where only you can see your struggle. Along with therapy, exercise, and medication, "faking it til you make it" is the treatment plan, allowing yourself the freedom to try to function and feel better. And from experience, living for others is one of the easiest ways to push yourself to make an effort.

Unless you mean "dedicate their life to a random cause" as in "at least take someone awful with you". That's generally frowned upon advice, but I definitely understand the sentiment more than I wish.

  • if you quit a job you didn't like or was toxic, didn't the financial hit scare you?
  • Everyone else is right. Try to line something new up first. But I was once in the position of quitting without something lined up, and the decider for me was that if I didn't quit, I was likely to actually take my own life. It's a matter of perspective at that point, and clearly, surviving was the better option.

  • The double standard for Harris and Trump has reached a breaking point | One candidate can rant about gibberish while the other has to be perfect.
  • And given that American voters exist in a 2 party system, nobody should be under the illusion that they have any other choice. Don't encourage people to delude themselves into thinking there is a better alternative. They're right, you're right, what's the best option?

  • The double standard for Harris and Trump has reached a breaking point | One candidate can rant about gibberish while the other has to be perfect.
  • One side must bring peace to the middle east, the other side is allowed to tell Israel to kill Palestinians faster.

And before someone comes defending their stance not to vote for either genocidal enabler, why aren't you trying to save as many people as possible? Are you ok with more people dying because of your ideals? Enjoy living with that choice if he wins.

  • I hope someone gives him the advice that he should consider refusing treatment, given the fact that he won't live long enough to be a free man with or without the treatment. He's lived his life, and left his legacy, now he needs to leave this world.

  • Sega files patent infringement lawsuit against Memento Mori developer over in-game mechanics, seeking 1 billion yen in damages
  • This shit is somewhat agreeable now, because Pal World is so similar, but once this door is opened, it's never going to let developers have the freedom to invent and innovate, because crusty old bullies want to use the legal system to punish anyone that dares resemble 2-3 decade old game mechanics.

Should platformer games pay royalties to Nintendo for having the first character to jump twice it's height?

Video game companies rent seeking for "game mechanics patents" on old shit is just ironically anti fun.

  • EU considers calculating X fines by including revenue from Musk’s other firms
  • I don't think I quite agree about governments being predatory by nature. I think they can be, have been in the past, and safeguards and checks and balances need to be there to prevent it. But generally a democratically elected government is beneficial, albeit flawed. Often reactive rather than proactive, but not commonly bloodthirsty. I mean, they often can't even jail executives for criminal decisions or negligence.

In Elon's case, I do believe governments around the world are going to have to adapt to protect their citizens from popular, but provably false and dangerous propaganda, as well as protect their privacy in the EU's case.

Also, I agree, we both aren't lawmakers. So for now I will just have to cheer any attempt at adaptation, and hope that their solution is functional and passes scrutiny.

  • EU considers calculating X fines by including revenue from Musk’s other firms
  • Gotta ask, what would you propose that would curb Elon from willfully committing crimes as he is?

He continues to do so because he's proven the system is broken as soon as someone is sufficiently wealthy. He fights the charges, then when that runs out he fights the amounts, and even when he does get his comeuppance to the tune of 44 billion, he's an even bigger brat cause he finally got stood up to. Do you think that there's a way to systematically even the playing field?

  • EU considers calculating X fines by including revenue from Musk’s other firms
  • Unironically, yes. You shouldn't be able to shield your actions under a different corporate umbrella.

"Oh, guess we can't fine them much because Twitter is a money pit, so they'll get to continue breaking the law for cheap"

Nah, make the fine off of his entire net worth, make him cash in some of that stock so he can finally pay taxes and fines. Make it hurt enough for him to consider not breaking the laws of countries he wants to do business in.

  • Sometimes you have to travel to fantasy world to pull someone out.
  • I mean, it's all fictitious headcanon, I'm on board with this one.

"And as God declared homosexuality a sin, he made his second mistake, because their over representation led to a fabulous revolution. Fighting back against homophobic demons and damned souls, and freely inviting the homosexual demons into their territory, they created a vibrant new hell... With blackjack, and hookers."

  • ... where do these weirdos come from
  • You know, this actually seems kind of fun. Fly this and a BLM flag, and anyone who it pisses off is pretty clearly admitting that their "heritage" actually is just pride in racism and homophobia.

  • 10th death reported in Boar's Head deli meat listeria outbreak
  • They have. And for any remaining plants they are dropping liverwurst from production.

What we really need is better proactive safety inspections in food production, and jail time for production management and company leadership in the case of negligently unsanitary practices, like the ones found in this facility.

We won't get it, though. Regulations are bad for business, and you can't hurt the job creators... but that's kind of the point of regulations. They are there to make not following the letter of the law more impactful than following it.

  • DIY vehicle autonomy (ADAS)

Congrats on the new community launch. I hope this post fits.

If you're a bit of a tech head and want to experiment with a very autopilot-like system, you should give openpilot a look.

Just like autopilot(and "FSD" for that matter), it doesn't remove your responsibility to drive the car and remain alert, but what it does let you do is remove hands from the wheel if desired while you pay attention. It's driver monitoring for paying attention is actually a pretty well designed system too, and since it's fully open source you know that your data is yours alone, or at least you can verify and change it if you prefer.

There's a lot of user videos you can watch of openpilot in action on YouTube, and it's pretty amazing to see what you can do with an aftermarket driver assist system. While the newest dev kit is no longer an actual smartphone, the comma 2 was a literal smartphone you taped to your windshield that drove your car for you. It's amazing what's been engineered on such meager specs.

I've used openpilot for just under 100,000 miles, I will never buy another car that isn't compatible with openpilot or something better. Openpilot beats the hell out of Blue Cruise or Super Cruise, and it costs exactly $0 a month unless you want extra features.

Here's a link to the page you can use to check your vehicle compatibility. Most cars only take like 30 minutes to install.
