Portland’s ranked-choice debut causes voter engagement to crater; 1 in 5 who cast ballots chose no one for City Council
  • We do all of our voting by mail and get a pamphlet with most of the serious candidates. It is really great and we have like two weeks to work on it. It isn't like we showed up at the poll and were confronted with this and had to fill it out on the spot.

  • It looks pretty overwhelming, but remember that all of our voting is by mail. I had my ballot and voter guides for at least two weeks before the election. I felt like it took some work, but I had plenty of time and info to make informed choices.

I am in a district that had 30 city council candidates. There are three seats in each district and I already knew a few of the folks running in my district, so it was pretty easy.

Overall I really liked the rank choice, especially for mayor. There was one candidate I really didn't like and I did not really have to choose between the other front runners based on who I thought had a better chance of winning (I also didn't have a clear favorite between them).

  • What websites still feel like the old internet?

They are trying to be 90s, but I love it. I thought they had a site counter at some point, but maybe I am misremembering and it was just the guest book.

  • Jesus could have been an antique meme à la Chuck Norris that got waaaay out of hand
  • Jesus was so cool

No wonder there are so many Christians

  • Someone check if Sticker Mule made this
  • Sticker Ninja is a really great small company that puts out really quality stickers.

  • Field business
  • I wish I worked in the forest. I am usually on farms or in industrial areas. But I get to live in the city and have no commute

  • Field business
  • I love it when farmers apologize to me for their dirty bathrooms. Like, bro, it has running water, this is like the Ritz. I know I'm a woman and all, but I have used some horrific porta John's in my day, hardly anything phases me anymore. PS, I have no idea where I am, but I do have plenty of experience in the field with no facilities and this meme triggered me

  • arthropods
  • Note that this is described species. Beetles are really easy to preserve and are often super cool. There are likely more species in other orders, but they haven't had as much work done on them. Hymenoptera, for example, with all of the parasitic wasps probably has more species but they can be so freaking small and difficult to work with.

Sorry, I am like a wanna be entomologist who works with akshual entomologists and this is one of the things that triggers them

  • I do wash my ass in the shower

  • This toilet paper at my work
  • Obviously unpopular opinion, but I prefer one ply. The fluffy stuff always leaves lint which I think is pretty gross. I also find it more adjustable, like maybe I only need one square to wipe up a little toothpaste but I can also use three feet to wipe my ass.

I will die on this hill

  • What group/social activities are popular during the wet/cold/dark seasons?
  • My favorite thing was volunteer amphibian egg mass surveys. Sime agencies still do them, but I haven't kept up with how to get involved. They usually start in January and go through March maybe into April. A good place to start if you are interested might be the wetlands conservancy on the west side or the city of Gresham on the east side. You go out in wetlands in chest waders looking for frog and salamander eggs, it's great.

  • How can I become a better conversationalist?
  • Sometimes I can turn that around and say something like "I'm not sure, what about you?". I think often people just ask us about a topic because they want to say something about it.

  • Oh, Karla!

Never change Portland, I ❤️ you
