Why not?
The stated goal of entering Lebanon was to end the threat from Hezbollah - if they stay away from the border and allow the Lebanese government to enforce rule of law, hasn't that been fulfilled?
That is simply incorrect. I suggest that you educate yourself further on the topic and refrain from making similarly uninformed statements on related topics in the future.
Here is the wikipedia page of all current members of knesset:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_members_of_the_twenty-fifth_Knesset
Going from the top of the list of current knesset members, we have Likud party members (the current ruling party).
No. 4 on the list is Amir Ohana, current speaker of the Knesset. He is the child of two moroccan jews, and also happens to be gay.
No. 7 Shlomo Karhi, minister of Communications, Tunisian heritage.
No. 8 David Bitan - born in Morocco.
Q.E.D, feel free to find more examples on your own, there are plenty.
I would say that demographic tensions in the US, colloquially "american racism" primarily have a particular flavour - namely focusing on skin colour. In other parts of the world demographic tensions come in many other forms. Between Europeans for instance it is more often cultural and religious tensions (secular/atheist vs religious, protestant vs catholic, germanic vs latin etc).
For each region and people these sorts of tensions tend to have a basis in different historic catalysts. In Israel for instance, there are jewish-arab tensions with a long and complicated history, interreligious tensions (christians - muslims - religious jews - secular/atheist), intra-jewish ethnic tensions (mizrahi-sephardim-ashkenazi) and many others. Similar tensions can be found in other countries in the middle east.
The problem with applying the american lens to these other areas is that it will miss important aspects and risks exacerbating problems by applying inappropriate remedies.
Yep - a lot of westerners fail to understand that a majority of Israelis have middle-eastern or north-African ancestry, even if excluding the large arab Israeli demographic. Depicting the people of Israel as a monolith is a very crude oversimplification
Price of oil coming down, sanctions taking effect. Europe just needs to keep up with supporting for a while longer whilst the Russian economic downturn turns into a collapse.
Whilst I agree that some mods may be overzealous and that the fediverse has a serious slant, you also seem to have behaved very uncivilly.
In any case, unlike reddit, there are many options. When lemmy.ml/c/world bans me for criticizing genocides comitted by the USSR & CCP I can still post to lemmy.world/c/world or even create my own community for world news elsewhere.
Trying to apply american racism to israeli demographics may be one of the quickest ways to show your ignorance on the topic.
On mobile i use mutify, which simply mutes audio whenever an ad starts. Dead simple and works like a charm!
Most human acticity requires some degree of mining. Lithium, copper, uranium etc. The impact of that however pales in comparison to the sheer volumes of land that are destroyed by climate change and fossil fuel extraction. Besides, when mines finally do shut down they often become havens for wildlife.
Pre-packaging moves a decent amount of spoilage from the shop to the customer. Nobody will want to choose the somewhat sad-looking fruit/veggie when they're loose, but they can easily be hidden in a bag of 10.
Dags för piratbyrån 2.0?
Nearly half of young Norwegians are fine with piracy to save money, survey shows
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/22278311
> High costs cited as the main reason for piracy acceptance
The article did cherry-pick, twist and misconstrue what was in the article, ignored the cited study that was the actual basis and instead chose to focus on... the photo?
Journalists nowadays tend to use barely-related stock photos for most articles anyway and besides, average speed does not equate to following speed limit, particularly in an urban environment which dictates frequent stops and slowdowns - as cyclists complaining about dangerous drivers should be well aware of.
If you cycle with care, you probably aren't part of the demographic of careless cyclists.
Here is the article in question:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/11/17/lets-get-tough-on-the-scourge-of-rogue-cyclists/
Quotes from it:
The survey results included a photograph of a child being hit by one of these moronic cyclists. One could observe that if this continues unchecked someone will get killed, but it is too late: pedestrians already have been. In 2022 there were 462 reported collisions between cyclists and pedestrians, up from 308 in 2020. Some of the ugliest involved pensioners, and as well as jumping red lights, cyclists were seen breaking the speed limit and riding on pavements.
The article is behind a paywall, but it almost exclusively focuses on the danger posed to pedestrians, and not only from cyclists, but also from scooters (which seem to be the worst) and motorists.
I very nearly missed it myself, noticing a small post with a handful of comments on another forum a few minutes ago (not federated), and it's less than a half hour left before 00 and the end of the day.
No mention in the news, or on the radio, or in the fediverse, or by anybody irl. It honestly feels a bit melancholic.
There is a larger usage of fossil fuels than there otherwise would have been. A certain portion of new renewables replaced nuclear power instead of fossil fuelled plants.
So yes, Germany did prioritize removing safe, clean energy over removing dirty, dangerous energy.
Not sure if it's my favourite, but I definitely haven't seen it mentioned on the internet: Kai Chronicles!
It's an app with the entire lone wolf saga CYOA books in digital format, for free, no ads.
Definitely would recommend.
Yeah, it's the same thing that lets us have a site like lemmy
Pretty cool, now if only more people would start using it...
Here's hoping that the Russian people get fed up with Putins ruination of the country and put an end to this madness.
You really want to go for sarcasm and whataboutism to defend torture?
At least in my book, it's wrong regardless of who's doing it, but maybe Lemmy disagrees.
Who is your preferred Democratic presidential candidate, and why?
I'm interested to see what lemmy thinks of this, I honestly haven't kept track of the potential options.
Finally made the move
Just don't ask how long it took to get my dGPU working properly :D But thankfully, there were a bunch of helpful folks with tips!
"The Price of a Mile" hits me differently nowadays
The song (by Sabaton) came on as I was heading to work this Thursday, and I found myself tearing up. It's the first time in a few years that I heard it and it hit differently. I've got relatives and friends of friends in active duty.
Not anyone I'm in touch with, but I've met them, and I hear of them. The price of a mile is the suffering and lives of them, their friends, and so many other young men.
One of my bubbles has been burst by what's happening in Ukraine & Israel. War is no longer history, news and reports. It has become a lot more real to me, and it's something I could end up being a part of.
This feels like a rather serious topic for a community called casual conversation, but feel free to share your thoughts on this, or a "bubble bursting" moment of your own.
What are some good role models for men?
Feel free to highlight people from both reality and fiction - and why they make a good role model.
I didn't read the TOS for Baldurs Gate 3 until now
It actually states that you may transfer your rights to the game to another person, which is, like... wow.
I'm not sure if I've ever seen this in another steam-connected game.
I still dislike the wording around the fact that the TOS can be changed at any time, and refusing revokes your right to playing it (without any compensation), but that's pretty much industry standard (unfortunately). This however, stood out to me.
P.S: If any of y'all have some extraordinary TOS's for other games that stand out in good (or bad) way feel free to share, it'd be interesting to know if there are others!
Alternatives to Accubattery
So I've got a pretty old smartphone and have replaced the battery once already. I've kept track of wear with the help of accubattery, since the phone didn't have that built in.
However, enshittification is encroaching, and I'm now looking for alternatives. What are some decent options?
How do you meet new people?
In our current day and age, it's rather hard to meet new people and make new friends, particularly for those of us who do not participate in mainstream social media. So, how and where do you meet new people? Feel free to add some context around that.
What makes a (good) monarch?
As something of a history buff I've read about a fair few Kings and Queens through history. There are many of them, most mediocre, a lot of them objectively bad, however, now and again one stands out from the masses as a good one.
So, what (according to you) makes a good monarch? Feel free to point to a particular person, or event as an example :)
If you live in the EU - you may also be faced with this Meta prompt. Info in text.
If you, like me, live in the EU, Facebook is now entirely clamping down and forcing free users to make their personal data available for monetization.
Attempting to access any Facebook domain and perhaps also other meta products will redirect you to the following prompt with a choice between either accepting the monetization of your user data, or coughing up a region-dependent monthly subscription fee: base (for me ~10€) + an additional fee (~7€) for each additional facebook or instagram account you have.
Now, the hidden third option. At an initial glance, it seems like there is no other option but to click one of the buttons - however, certain links still work, and grant access to important pieces of functionality through your web browser.
If anyone has information to add regarding Facebook or Instagram, please do share it. I've only (begrudgingly) used the former up until now, but I know many others use Instagram and don't feel like giving a single cent (nor their personal info) to Meta.
-
https://www.facebook.com/dyi - perhaps most important of all, now is a good time to make a request to download your Facebook data. Don't forget to switch to data for "all time" and "high quality" if you intend to permanently delete your account.
-
https://www.facebook.com/your_information - here you can find and manage your information, but crucially also access Facebook messenger.
-
The messenger app: Still hasn't prompted me with anything, though I expect that will change in the not too far future.
Currently my plan is to use messenger to inform any important friends that I intend to leave FB, and where they'll be able to reach me in the future.
"A Killer App"
This time around, the base prompt is the title. Same as previous: SDXL 1.0 via NightCafé. Getting with the spirit of halloween. Inspired by the expression "That's a killer app!".

With a Broken Heart
Keeping the streak going with a new vibe.
Once again, SDXL 1.0 @ NightCafé, inspired by the song "One Way Ticket" (to the blues), with Neil Sedaka

A view in a fantasy world
Y'all folks make me want to make stuff just to share :)
