Dyk, Bobby?
  • I'm not directly aware of any trees that do that, but it honestly wouldn't surprise me if that was true for at least one species.

Most trees that drop seeds have methods of getting them away from the parent tree. Maple trees have little helicopter twirlies, oak trees have animals carry them off, some trees grow new ones from their roots called suckers.

I'll try to look it up later because now I'm curious. I'll update here if I find anything interesting about trees dropping leaves to prevent new ones growing too close.

I don't think my arborist textbook said anything about that specifically, but I'll double check there first.

  • Why only cyclists should wear hi-viz in the dark? Cars can too!
  • I prefer when all people occupying the road, whether its a pedestrian, cyclist, motorcyclist, car, or horse rider be as visible as possible.

Its why I refuse to drive a gray or silver car. They blend in with the pavement at certain times in the am and pm and if it's raining really hard they disappear. In a lot of ways they are worse than black cars.

What's wrong with making sure you are visible? Why is that something to make fun of? (I'm not asking you directly, I just don't get the joke in the ad.)

  • Kate Nash and Lily Allen on OnlyFans should be a wake-up call for the music industry
  • It's also probably one of the few ways for artists to have an income that their lable/manager/publisher/whoever the fuck else doesn't take a huge cut of. Add in ticket master and company and they're fucked.

Those contracts they sign can be fucking brutal. I'm not familiar with either of those artists but it's a common enough problem in that industry.

  • Funeral home owners plead guilty to corpse abuse after nearly 200 decomposing bodies found
  • I feel like that would've smelled really bad, and there would've been flocks of crows and vultures hanging around.

I don't know, maybe I'm just super sensitive to the smell of death or something, but one decomposing mouse can stink up a good portion of a warehouse. If he was too lazy to cremate them, I doubt he was throwing garden lime down.

    Strange situation.

  • What vendors make good dumb TVs or big monitors?
  • Ours had a really sluggish menu with ads until we disconnected it from the internet. Now it has zero ads and the menu to switch sources is as fast as it should be.

I wish I had never connected it to begin with though. I didn't know better. It used to default to whatever console was on, but it updated and no longer does that for some shitty reason. So I have to go through the menu and manually switch sources now. Probably to make sure I saw all the ads before using my playstation. Assholes.

  • GOP senator introduces bill to legally erase transgender people
  • Its that or they're part of the group that's mad that they can't just masterbate/fantasize about whatever woman they see because they might have genitals they aren't attracted to.

These types of men are accustomed to not having to think about objectifying women. Trans women complicate that privilege and they resent them for it and find any and every reason to demonize them.

It's a sad , limited reality to live in... onr that leads to violent hatred unfortunately.

  • Crowd cheered as two transgender women were attacked in Minneapolis, advocates say
  • What the actual fuck. This is beyond words, and I hope those two women heal quickly. They didn't deserve that.

The wastes of human flesh that did this and cheered for it need to be jailed and put on a list like sex offenders. I know there's problems with that system but there's gotta be some kind of action people can do to help trans folks stay safe. A hate crime list would be a way to start.

I don't know about the legality of assembling one outside official channels, but people can pressure their states to make one since the infrastructure is already there.

  • Domestic dispute call left a 2-month old dead from a trigger happy officer. Another news article quoted "It looked like her head exploded"
  • My husband is brown, and had a cop intentionally try to antagonize him into responding emotionally so the cop could violently arrest him.

Used aggressive language, threats to bring him to the station, veiled threats alluding to a guy who had been paralyzed and left in a coma by police the week before. It was sick and fucked up. It left my husband literally shaking afterwards. I've never seen him scared like that. I hate that cop with every fiber of my being. My husband is a gentle, kind, and loving person just trying to get his car fixed.

His offense that got him pulled over? Going to the mechanic to get his car fixed so it would pass emissions and we could update the registration.

To folks reading this, cops will absolutely try to antagonize you and escalate the situation. Don't let them. It gives them every excuse to shoot you and get away with it.

Cops can go fuck themselves to death.

  • Microsoft tries to convince Windows 10 users to buy a new PC with full-screen prompts
  • My game library was what was holding me back too. Now I just have to see if animationdesk runs on linux and I'll be all set make the switch.

If it doesn't I don't know what I'll do. I haven't found any other animation programs built primarily around onion skinning. I don't need AI to create the tweens for me. I just want a bare bones program that let's me do everything by hand.

I'll have to check when I get out of work today and if it's all good I'll probably start researching installation processes this weekend. I don't know much about Linux, but I guess I'm about to learn

  • Concept for deterring the selection of "no tip" (not real)
  • In some restaurants the waiter or waitress gets to decide how much of their tips they're going to share with their busser.

My first job was a bussing tables, and my first waitress was this old, mean, greedy woman who never shared her tips no matter how good you did.

It was my first job so I didn't stand up for myself, but I had some older German tourists come in one day and the man basically made me take a huge tip because "you are working so hard!" Told me to keep it for myself. Thank you German couple! You helped me realize my worth and that job didn't last the summer.

I'll never work in food service again.

  • Don’t underestimate the Rogansphere. His mammoth ecosystem is Fox News for young people
  • I know an actual person who ate equine ivermectin because of the misinformation spread on Joe Rogan's show.

The individual who did this was going on about worm larvae living in the masks made in China, and that's what is making people sick and not covid. That's why masking is bad and ivermectin good.

Apparently this is the quality of the information he promotes. He doesn't even take responsibility for it. He hides behind free speech and being a "comedian." Neither of those things absolve a person from being responsible with their platforms. Especially when it contributes to making a worldwide public health crisis worse.

Also, for the record I semi-recently found out he was a comedian. I always thought he was some Alex Jones type pushing fucked up conspiracy theories. And I honestly still believe that. He's not funny and he pushes harmful conspiracy theories.

He's no better than Alex Jones.

  • it's that simple
  • Birth control is nothing more than a form of medical technology. People against birth control and abortion(also medical technology) are Medical Luddites.

They must be afraid of losing their jobs at crisis pregnancy centers, or be afraid they won't be allowed to shame young single mothers anymore.

  • TIL antiperspirant works better if applied at night before bed
  • Oh I didnt know that about zinc. Zinc oxide is in a lot of stuff. Like diaper rash cream, sun screen, some exzema creams and dandruff shampoo. Must be a bitch to figure out what's causing your skin issues, especially if its in your skin care products.

  • Masked group marches through Ohio neighborhood with swastika flags
  • That's good to hear! The UK is probably a lot safer than staying stateside. But if you find job prospects better in New England we welcome you!

The roads are kinda crappy, and we still have some trump supporters, but it's definitely muted compared to other parts of the country.

  • Masked group marches through Ohio neighborhood with swastika flags
  • I hope you are able to stay safe where you are. A lot of New England states prepared for an influx of people needing medical care when roe vs wade was overturned. Some blatantly said they will not cooperate with states like Texas and will not release people's medical records.

I'm hoping if things escalate they'll follow that trend and help people get out. There's been some states like Vermont and Connecticut that have had a decrease in population over the past 10 years so there's room for more people should it come to that.

  • Twitch declares “Zionist” a slur — and a bannable offense
  • I guess my pessimistic lens is a little strong and I generally don't trust large companies to act in good faith. So maybe I'm over scrutinizing here and being a bit of a curmudgeon.

I think your perspective is fair, and it's likely this is akin to a high school faculty dealing with some random word or idea becoming a meme of sorts and causing problems. So they have to write some new rule that sounds ridiculous or weird.

It sucks there's so much racism and bigotry driving forces in the world that it's hard to not be dubious of everything. You always kinda wonder about the actual motivation behind things like this.

  • Twitch declares “Zionist” a slur — and a bannable offense
  • Calling zionism what it is shouldn't be discouraged with dog whistles masquerading as conduct policies.

At the same time I'd like to remind folks that not all Jewish people subscribe to Zionism.

There are a couple Jewish lead organizations that fight for the freedom of Palestine and have been very critical of Israel for many years.

Jewish Voices for Peace is one group. I wonder how they'd feel about Twitches new policy. I'm genuinely curious what their opinion would be.

Edit - corrected Jewish Voices for Peace
