If you were a rich man... What would you do?
  • Don’t threaten me with a good time. :-)

Seriously though, we have friends there and have visited. We fell in love with all of it, from the culture to the landscape.

  • Would social events be better if phones didn't have data?
  • We’re on a limited data plan to save money so I already keep it turned off for everything except messaging. I don’t think we could afford a full-fat data plan! That crap adds up quick.

  • I wonder why people litter in the USA?
  • Personally, if I see a full trash can I will keep my trash with me until I can find a place to dispose of it. I can’t imagine just throwing it on the ground regardless of the can situation.

  • If you were a rich man... What would you do?
  • Not go to work and sleep for about a year before I figure out what I really want to do.

    Edit: move to Finland first.

Reuters - Trump vows new Canada, Mexico, China tariffs that threaten global trade

If Trumps tariffs go thru would that not cause the countries the tariffs are imposed on just raise their prices? And a result of that hurt the american consumer? Why do it to begin with?
  • Anti-dumping orders can be very specifically targeted (down to a manufacturing company level) to combat the issue in your first paragraph. Sometimes the duties can be over 100% on items that get ADD.

There are still high tariffs on many raw steel products from many countries - it’s called Section 232 duties.

  • Just to add, I work with this stuff all day as a Licensed Customs Broker. The US already has a lot of low tariffs (duties) on a huge range of goods. There are also a lot of free trade agreements in place that reduce or eliminate these tariffs if certain requirements can be met. The first round of tariffs on China are still around, tons of products from China already have 25% duty on top of the ‘normal’ duty rate for a said product.

I am curious what mechanism they will use to try and impose the tariffs quickly - there are only certain legal ways to do this and they take time and some need Congressional approval and investigations.

  • Which cologne smells so good on a man?
  • Really depends on who you ask. My wife has absolutely hated every cologne she has smelled so far.

  • I believe it. We visited in late summer so didn’t see it. I don’t think I’d mind much myself but it’s all academic as I’ll never live there.

  • Canada's provincial leaders want a free trade deal with the US that excludes Mexico
  • If only this guy knew what was involved in certifying stuff under the current USMCA agreement. It is not nearly as simple as slapping a ‘Made in Mexico’ label on it. There are a strict set of rules that involve classifying every item in a BOM and having values of them with rules about what goods can shift and what the values thresholds are for each component. It’s part of what I do every day for work. Too much non-US, CA, or MX content that doesn’t tariff shift and you can’t get duty free entry.

  • I need to. Other friends of mine have said it’s really good.

  • Severance and For All Mankind have been top notch. Dark Matter and Foundation were good too. I really hope Apple keeps funding this stuff.

Of course, we subscribe for a month and binge so maybe we’re part of the problem?

  • Just finished Norco

So picked this up in the recent Steam sale and just finished it. What does everyone think? I liked it, though I definitely enjoyed the earlier portions more, when it felt more grounded than fantastical. I would love to see a game centered around LeBlanc and his time as a PI before Kay returns. I feel like that would be a good setting to really dig into this awesome dystopia that was created here.

    Help with congested cat?

Hello all! Looking for any advice or thoughts from anyone else in a similar position. One of our cats has been super congested (whenever he is active you can especially hear it) for a few weeks now. I know most cats always have a low level viral respiratory infection (especially shelter cats), but last Tuesday (9/3) I took him to the vet and they said he may have a secondary bacterial infection so they gave him a shot of antibiotics and said he should be better in a week or two. Today, he still sounds just as bad and stuffed up. I also tried having him in the bathroom while I ran the shower hot and it seemed to loosen up a little, but it still sounds almost as bad.

Anyone have a similar experience? I am planning on taking him back to the vet early next week if it doesn't improve over the weekend but I'd rather avoid the bill if this is more of a 'wait it out' situation.

    Per Aspera in 2024?

How is it in 2024 now that it’s finished? A lot of reviews I see are based on when it originally came out but I’m curious about the current state of the game. With it being on sale now it seems like it’s worth it even with flaws.

For some context, I’m not a huge city-builder guy (I’ve played some here and there) but the sci-fi setting and the narrative are what interest me here. I don’t really care about replayability as long as one play through is entertaining enough.

    Any thoughts?

    Help me understand?

So I've been doing a deep dive into all this stuff recently, I find it to be fun and interesting. However, I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what all these whistleblowers are alleging. Basically, the idea is that there is a secretive group of USG employees that know what is going on with UAPs and researching stuff, but Congress and the President know nothing of it and have no oversight of it? Is it just a bunch of high-ranking military people who pass the knowledge on to their successor when they retire? Or is the idea that all of these whistleblowers and Congress are in on it and this is all part of a slow 'controlled disclosure' scenario? Or is it a combined scenario where some members of the Executive Branch DO know about it but others don't?

Obviously, there are no hard and fast answers to this, I just feel like I keep hearing conflicting things about who in the USG knows what, and wondering if there is any kind of rough consensus about this? Probably a fools errand, but I figured I'd at least ask.
