"Woke" games
  • Honestly this sort of thing happening is extremely rare. In reality either the story/environment gets sacrificed to pander to some audience to make more money, or the game is from the ground up built to support that political message.

What also happens is devs deciding that they'd rather have diversity than trying to emulate some real historical setting in their unrealistic fantasy world, which for some reason gets people crying too, but has nothing to do with pushing a political message and rather just changing the expectation of white male default in western games (and probably pandering to the sensibilities of the majority of their audience to make more money).

It's not wrong that the complaints about "woke" are mostly precisely about this perceived lowering of quality for some agenda or pandering, it's just that that is rarely what's happening. Like this whole idea that some people like to push that if not every woman in your game is conventionally attractive, it's "woke" and you're "ignoring your actual audience". When usually these games have a ton of hot women (and men) anyway because they're fully aware many people like playing hot characters, they just have other options too.

  • "They already have your data"
  • I feel like this still slightly misses the problem. I couldn't give less of a shit whether they do or don't make money from my data, I care that they are tracking so many things for that purpose that I can be identified and many lifestyle habits are visible, which is a problem when the data ends up with someone who wants to use it to spy on me. Which probably has never targeted me specifically, but my data is almost certainly in a tool capable of this. Because this happens frequently.

Of course this happens because they want to make money from it and sell it, but even if they only want it to idk customize my feed to make me like their website more and it never leaves their server, I'd still have to worry about data breaches. Or just someone else taking over and deciding that selling it is great, actually.

And even though I have decided that I personally don't really care enough to deal with the downsides for quality of life, that doesn't mean I don't want this to stop via legal means.

  • Self perception
  • Sadly unlikely because it's rooted in biological differences (mainly hormones), so on average there will be sex-based differences. I'd love it if people stopped stereotyping because of that but I doubt itll ever happen. Maybe we can at least get rid of the idea of gendered hobbies and such, but even then most people want to identify as part of a group so there will likely always be some association.

  • I knew about the gap but... no indicator either??? Are they at least locked so the worst case scenario is thay awkward moment where you try to open a locked bathroom stall?

I'm planning on visiting next year so I guess I'll see the reality of it. Maybe I'll have to avoid public toilets even more than usual lol

  • House Speaker Johnson announces transgender bathroom ban—on Trans Day of Remembrance
  • As a german I have never seen this but whichever country is doing that has things figured out.

To be clear we do still have proper stalls, it's just that bathrooms are always gendered unless it's a really small place that only has one toilet in the first place.

  • Impossible Foods Edges Closer To EU Approval
  • Solely going off their burger patties (haven't tried other stuff) I wouldn't call beyond realistic, though it is very tasty (imo moreso than actual beef). It definitely doesn't taste the same though.

I think there's also a cultural issue, some people at least here in germany still consider it weird if you order the vegan/vegetarian version of anything, especially if you aren't entirely vegan yourself. If that sort of pressure exists it's also less likely for anyone to try plant based alternatives, no matter how good.

  • What you rather?
  • Depending on what games you play it's anywhere from unusable (games with incompatible anticheat) to flat out better than windows even ignoring all the surrounding bullshit. But many of these gsmes with anticheat are among the most popular games in the world, so there's plenty of reason not to change just bc of those for a lot of people.

  • Defenestration
  • A lot of them are though (often times the health issues stem from being homeless anyway). And for the ones that aren't, they can still have a home, even ignoring that I think it's a basic right, I'd rather they do whatever they do inside their home than in a public park.

  • Popular Female Skyrim Modder Has Abandoned Her Work Due to Daily Harrassment
  • People do this with artists too. Especially the moment you offer anything in the way of free commissions for a specific community and such.

Many forums had gfx threads, where members who enjoy putting together banners and such would offer to make something for those who asked. A good friend of mine ran one in a certain game's forum for a while and the absolute entitlement in which some of those people acted (in regards to speed and nitpicking about minor things) was disgusting. It was maybe 1 in 25 people but it soured the whole thing for her, understandably so. The moment you give people a little finger wrt their requests, one of those people will take the whole hand. The same likely applies to modding.

And I'm sure being a woman doing gaming stuff isn't helping because there's way too much sexism in gaming culture, even though there are also a lot of subcommunities that are super welcoming to everyone.

  • New Superhero
  • When there are 2 choices and you choose neither that is opting out of a decision, and nothing else. It's throwing your hands up and saying "well i cant change it anyway, let's just do nothing".

Also, stop pretending like trumps and kamalas stances are identical. They're not. Trump is right up there with netanyahu in seeing palestinians as subhuman.

  • New Superhero
  • And american voters also didn't get to do anything about the palestinian genocide because there were two choices and pretending there were more is delusional at best. And the choice was between a party unwilling to take a strong stance against it vs a party actively encouraging it and saying they'd help. While also openly wanting to genocide minority groups in their own country.

Well, there is a third choice. It's the centrist choice of either not voting or voting for an irrelevant party, equivalent to saying "let the others decide".

  • Ubisoft is being sued for making The Crew unplayable
  • If you have to request the source code by asking for it via a form and get sent the code printed out via snail mail that is still "publicly accessible". Not saying companies would do that since it seems like it'd just cost them money for no benefit, just that there are usually ways to really hinder people's access without being closed source.

There could be lines drawn, but it'll be hard to find the medium between reasonable and preventing exploits. Forcing an upload to third party services like github seems dubious. I guess a zip file somewhere on the company website wouldn't be hard to do, provided the company isn't bankrupt (which is an entire different can of worms, what do you do then).

I'd still be heavily in favor of such legislations fwiw, perfect is the enemy of good and all that, but there's a sweet spot of "actually does something and doesn't kill all live service games" that would need to be found

  • Berlin lawmaker proposes women-only train carriages like in Tokyo
  • Those will always be a small part. If it's culturally clear what is harrassment and shouldn't be tolerated, it's far more likely that 1) there are actual consequences to sexual harrassment because victims feel comfortable speaking up and 2) that bystanders will try to intervene. Both of which make it less likely for anyone to even try.

When speaking up is met with "you dressed wrong", "he was just trying to get to know you", that is the core problem. Adding "you were on the wrong train car" isn't necessarily helpful.

Japans women-only cars are sadly necessary, but the focus should be on making them unnecessary, not adding gender segregation in more places.

  • Except medieval peasants had more holidays than modern Americans
  • The idea that medieval peasants somehow had more free time than the average modern american still is absolute bullshit as far as I'm aware. Unless "necessary preparations for survival" count as free time just because it's not contracted work (it doesn't that's not what free time means).

  • History Repeats Itself
  • It's moreso in the fact that trumps followers were also totally convinced that the child was about to be punched. Everyone likes to think their view of the world is objective and everyone who acts against it does so fully knowing what they're doing.

That aside if any of these politicians actually cared they would've attempted to fix your election system long ago, so of course he's doing nothing.

  • Accurate
  • Yeah, would feel much more accurate to say good at things the hormone roulette in your brain decides you want to do (which does lead to you actually wanting to do them at least), terrible at everything else including things you want to do as a result of actually thinking.

  • Anon walks home in the city at 2 AM
  • Being scared isn't really something you can control. So I think what matters is whether that affects how she treats men.

As someone who also is quite scared of strangers when no one is around, I mostly just avoid that situation to begin with. If that's not possible or it's just too severe, it's definitely something where looking into professional help could help her, if it's available. Though not listening to true crime podcasts would probably be a good start...
