Lemmings, of Lemmy, Have you ever mudered anyone?
  • Yeah, that’s right up there with the classic “face-to-fist” fighting technique. Sadly, the thread in question was a bit more “…he did it to me for years but the first time he did it to our daughter I snapped.” Kinda grim - but real.

  • Lemmings, of Lemmy, Have you ever mudered anyone?
  • In many jurisdictions there is a big difference between murdering and killing. Murder it’s almost always a giant no-no. The killing angle would more likely get you some stories. There’s a tumblr (?) thread about women offing their husbands etc for some pretty reasonable reasons - although, honestly, a lot of those were probably murder; now that I think of it.

  • What is Veganic Farming?
  • I’m way out of my depth here but 5 minutes on encyclopaedia Britannica tells me that gmo cotton, corn, soy bean etc has something from a bacteria implanted. So I’m guessing that’s why vegan farming dodges those chimeras.

  • Why people consistently vote against their own interests to benefit the rich?
  • Sri Lankans (of all varieties - complicated history) have elected a left leaning coalition. It’s very unusual the majority of every “section” of Sri Lanka to throw their support behind the same candidate / party (again - historical reasons.)

Here’s a BBC link. It appears to be reasonably factual as I understand it and is a good synopsis:

  • I have a feeling that at least some tankies might be fascist in disguise...
  • It’s almost like there are people blinded by messianic fervour on both (all) parts of the political spectrum. Who’d’ve thunk it? Humans be deeply flawed creatures - but I love them all. (Apart from actual arm band wearing Nazis.)

  • I have a feeling that at least some tankies might be fascist in disguise...
  • That’s really tickled me…

Nice to see humour still exists out there. I can’t believe how all these (apparently) politically literate people (I think predominantly they’re Yanks) throw around these words: fascist, Tankies, liberal, libertarian, conservative etc with little precision. It’s a pity as all it does is stifle interactions - and no one will find common ground. Good way to keep the serfs under the cosh if they’re all bickering amongst themselves.

  • The world is a big place
  • Whoa there, horsey. I was making a general opening statement - not a rebuttal to a sentence you never wrote. In another reply I went into a little more detail. My main point was that if it wasn’t because of a learning difficulty then simply “motivation” isn’t always enough. A lack of facilities ( No libraries, no literate family members, no internet connection, inadequate education etc. ) could be a factor.

On a side note, do not ever accuse me of being a septic again. There’s literally dozens of people on the internet that aren’t USian - but I understand it’s much easier to throw labels on people who don’t pander to your every post.

  • It's pretty cruel, particularly for non-native English speakers, that 'lose' and 'loose' seemingly switched spellings, meanings and pronunciations with each other when no one was looking
  • I think he was Dutch - but they do tend to speak “better” English than the English.

The difference in UK/US (amongst other first language English nations) pronunciation is something I know effects hip-hop lyricism (i.e. rapping) as different pronunciations mean some words only rhyme in your own dialect.

  • The world is a big place
  • Yes it is, so he either does have a learning difficulty (as OP suggested) and is hobbled by it or he has been let down by the education system or he’s lazy and stupid. ( might be some other reasons, too) As a result his motivation (if he had any) would be neither here nor there. Some people can’t read and write English because… they can’t. It’s that simple.
