Ken Burns is in your future
  • Of course we can't acknowledge it, because then we can't make the same "mistake" again and people will start questioning real causus belli like saddams WMDs which we'll find any day now.

  • Israel-Lebanon permanent ceasefire has been accepted, Biden says
  • Probably, this is how tribalism and war work. People will almost always side with there in group even if they are the obvious aggressor. Any attack on your in group, even in retaliation, will tend to reinforce bonds and further entrench you rather then make you "wake up" and leave the group or turn against the agitators. You want revenge and you aren't going to turn against the one guy who's shown he's willing to help you get that revenge.

  • Israel-Lebanon permanent ceasefire has been accepted, Biden says
  • Again your assuming that the Lebanese blame hezbollah for that fallout, and not the ones actually causing it. This is a classic imperial tactic of framing the ones fighting the system as troublemakers and blaming all the destruction the empire does in the name of repression on them. The Viet cong are the reason for us napalming children, if they weren't here we wouldn't have to do that. This can work on people sympathetic to the imperial project, but people who are less sympathetic think the empire is the trouble maker and the cause for the destruction, so anyone fighting them must be good.

Think, if trump went full dictator, and then antifa blew up an ICEstapo building and then trump started bombing Portland in retaliation, would you think this is all antifas fault like fox News would be pushing. Or would you think antifas a bit extreme but trump is a tyrant who is killing way more people who i am sympathetic to.

The sympathy for Israel among Lebanese and especially among shia is near 0, so if they're looking for someone to blame it's gonna be them.

  • Israel-Lebanon permanent ceasefire has been accepted, Biden says
  • Their approval among there base of shias has only gone up since the conflict started, there approval among non shias has remained constant. Your assuming that Lebanese view the situation as western media portrays it with hezbollah as terrorists and the ones to blame for the destruction but:

Seventy-eight percent of Lebanese respondents said Israel's onslaught of Gaza was a "terrorist act", while only 11 percent viewed Hezbollah's attacks on northern Israel as "terrorism".

This jump in approval among there base is despite them being in government and a horrific economic situation in Lebanon, that's how much the shia in south Lebanon hate israel and its genocide in Gaza.

  • Tesla would likely be excluded from new California EV tax credits, governor's office says
  • It'd be coming from the cap and trade sustainability fund, so it couldn't be used for housing, unless you could show that housing would reduce emissions. Still a lot better ways to spend the money, solar and wind, grid scale battery capacity, mass transit and high speed rail investment etc.

  • Help us please
  • It was literally mitt Romneys Healthcare plan from Massachusetts. They didn't even get a public option. It was the bare minimum because dems didnt want to mess with the insurance companies that line there pockets.

  • Women and LGBTQ+ people take up guns after Trump’s win: ‘We need to protect ourselves’
  • Washington was talking about the militias that were present in the early parts of the war that were under trained and undisciplined. The red coats took them easily and they fled often so the continental congress started the continental army lead by Washington, which was a trained and disciplined army in the style of European standing armies, which was able to take on and even defeat the British occasionally.

After the war the ruling elite still had this idealized vision of citizen militias protecting the liberty of white man and saw it as a less tyrannical, and cheaper model then the European professional standing army and made the second amendment to encourage it. Washington was saying that that system failed and will never work and that we should have a trained army ready to take on European powers if they come back.

Now we have the worst of both worlds, a massive army that gobbles up tax dollars and a bunch of untrained citizens with guns who barely understand what a militia is much less can protect the liberty of the nation.

  • Heterosexuality killed the Roman Empire
  • Can't do a full lore dump as I should go to bed, but this is about the antonine dynasty if you want to learn more, I can give some one liners

Nerva: was older when he started and ruled for a bit, mostly just stabilized the empire after a not so good performance by his predecessor domitian

Trajan: one of the best military generals, conquered mesopotamia and brought the empire to its greatest territorial extent

Hadrian: grecophile who consolidated the gains of Trajan, built a wall etc. Was the second gayest emperor, looking at you elagabalus, and got shit for making everyone worship his dead boyfriend as the god of beauty.

Abtoninus pius: good emperor, not much notable which is probably a good thing. Also built a wall

Marcus Aurelius: platonic ideal of a philosopher king. Great general, wrote a book on stoic philosophy called meditations. Wouldve probably gone down as the best emperor if he adopted an heir instead of passing it to:

Commodus: one of the worst emperors, as the meme shows. Was obsessed with gladiatorial combat and fought in the coliseum a couple times. While he was playing gladiator though a series of advisors ran the empire into the ground.

  • Newsom Challenges Trump on Electric Vehicle Tax Credits | Gov. Gavin Newsom said California would fill the void for residents if the Trump administration killed a $7,500 E.V. tax credit.
  • It already does exclude tesla. The first tax credit from the Obama years went away after a company was producing a certain volume of cars, it was meant to spur new companies, not bolster established ones. Tesla got it for a while but by now they make too many cars to count.

Not sure if it was actually kept in but the tax credits in the IRA were also dependent on cars being union made, and Elon hates unions so tesla was excluded. This is probably part of the reason Elon hates Biden and why he turned to trump.

So you don't have to really target tesla, you can just target large established manufacturers or non union ones.

  • Louisiana lawmakers pass income and corporate tax cuts, raising statewide sales tax to pay for it
  • While this is regressive and fucked, it looks like lower income people still won't have to pay income tax:

As part of the legislative package, lawmakers doubled the standard deduction for seniors and nearly tripled the standard deduction for individuals, effectively eliminating income tax on the lowest income households.

  • Taboo
  • You could make that same argument for stalin and the holodomor which is often used as the main proof of his evilness. Same with mao, most of the deaths attributed to them are from failed policies that caused mass famines. Do you think Churchill is on the same level as them? Because most of the west views the first two as mass murdering tyrants and Churchill as a hero.

You could say there worse because they ran oppressive authoritarian states, but the British empire was just as authoritarian to anyone who wasn't white.

  • Anti-NATO protest in Montreal erupts in fires, smashed windows
  • No war in western europe*

And that is mostly due to mutually assured destruction and decolonization and the destruction of European imperial ambitions. If these grand entangling alliances prevented war then WWI wouldn't have happened. If nukes weren't a thing then nato would probably be a factor contributing towards another world war rather then preventing it.

  • Claims in 'Duty To Warn' Letter to Harris Alleging Compromised Election Are Misleading
  • Kind of burying the lead on that quote:

The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities

So trump didn't try and punish a foreign power that helped him get in, and instead talked to them after the fact. I guarantee he's talking to netanyahu right now, but no one cares about that. There's nothing in that quote proving he was coordinating during the election.

2016 was lost because the democrats are losing the working class because they didnt offer them anything and were just pointing to the horror of trump and hoping it would scare voters to there side. In 2020 Biden was pushing a fairly progressive program with build back better plus people wanted an adult at the wheel to handle covid. Then kamala ran the same campaign as Clinton running on minor iterative improvements that most people won't see while pointing to the boogie man of trump and hoping that will scare people, and it failed again, even worse this time.

Democrats need to listen there base and try and win the working class back. Biden did, he opened his doors to Bernie and Warren and gave them a place in the party. He was rewarded for that with record voter turnout. This time we didn't have a primary and dissent was stifled due to the threat of trump.

At least that's my view of it, why do you think we lost?, we can at least say this time it's not Russian interference.

  • Claims in 'Duty To Warn' Letter to Harris Alleging Compromised Election Are Misleading
    1. Yeah they at least tried to
    2. Probably but those ties seem very loose. From what I can tell there wasn't much organization at all in the trump campaign , much less effective coordination with Russia. It wasn't Kissinger coordinating with south Vietnam to keep the war going or Reagan talking to Iran to not free the hostages.
    3. Maybe but that's only because the scales were so even. It may be a reason she lost, we can't know because we don't know how many people it actually flipped but my guess is very small compared to the other reasons clinton lost. I don't think it invalidates the election though as fundamentally it was still Americans freely choosing Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton through the broken electoral college. This happens quite often, like the examples above, even in this election it looks like netanyahu was holding off on a ceasefire in Lebanon to keep Biden from getting a win, that doesn't invalidates the election though.

Also I think democrats used it as a cope and scape goat for there electoral problems instead of addressing the actual major reasons people voted for trump. They failed to learn there lesson in 2016 and now here we are.

  • I really want to like Lemmy
  • It may not be for everyone. Lemmys growth has stalled out and barring musk buying reddit and turning it to shit i don't see another influx coming. So we're kinda stuck with the community that exists now. Its a pretty good and sustainable community which can provide a lot of general interest posts like news, memes and cats lately. But for other more specific topics if if it's not already a large community here it probably won't be. It's not even just niche interests, professional sports for example has very little presence on here as a whole much less individual sports or teams, and I don't see, for example, a baseball community taking off here no matter how much effort you put in since the current lemmy community isn't much interested in it and your average baseball fan probably won't be coming to lemmy to discuss things.

My recommendation would be to use lemmy for some of those general interest topics, and maybe some of the more popular niche communities if your into them, And go to other places, preferably independent forums or rss feeds, for other things. We don't need one unified scrolling app, it may be a bit more convenient, but the internet is better off if you spread your traffic around.

    Occasional weed use sucks

First of all this isn't an anti-weed post, I use weed regularly and enjoy it. What I'm arguing against is occasional use, once a month or less, at that level your tolerance usually resets between uses. The thing they don't tell you in health class is tolerance goes both ways, you become tolerant to both the positives and negatives of use. For weed the negative im referring to is anxiety, though short term memory loss also goes down with more regular use. Whenever I take a break and then start doing weed again I get way too in my head and anxious which usually goes away after a couple sessions. This has also become worse with modern legal strains that have become way too concentrated. Dispensary edibles are a bit better since you can dose them easier but even then the longer the time in between uses the more likely you'll forget what's a good dosage. I see this a lot with friends who don't regularly do weed and they smoke with me, get way too high, have a bad time and then won't do it again for a while and repeat the cycle. So for those type of people I'd recommend not doing weed at all or doing it more regularly so you can keep your tolerance up. No shame in picking either but the middle ground kinda sucks.

EDIT: a lot of people are saying get lower percentage strains or higher CBD ones, to that I'd say I wish I could. I always try and get the lowest percentage stuff I can find at the dispensary and that stuffs still usually in the high teens percent THC with less then a percent CBD here in SF. So I guess part of this is just a rant on how stupidly concentrated modern weed is and how it leaves little margin for error.
