Should one give money directly to homeless people?
  • The important act is giving. If you think a dude on the side of the road needs $20 and you've got it to spare, there's no downside to doing that. They may not use it how you like them to, but they will use it how they best can. Sometimes that's food, sometimes that's drugs, to keep them from actively offing themselves.

If you think a charity has a decent track record and can better use those funds to serve more people, donate it there. They'll use it how they beat see fit, whether that's food, shelter or enforcement of policies. It may not be how you want it used, but that's okay.

Ultimately, give what you can, however you can. Once you've given the money, you can't determine how it's used, so be okay with your act of charity simply existing by itself, not in comparison to another hypothetical "best" act of charity.

  • Besides your belief that there is no higher power, what are your thoughts on supernatural phenomena?
  • I fully believe there's something beyond our 3 spatial dimensions we call reality. What that is, I don't know. Does it have sentience, I doubt. I also think these things fall into unknowables, things each individual will develop a different feel for, and should be deeply personal.

  • The Witcher 4 has entered full-scale production, CD Projekt has confirmed
  • Can confirm. I'm playing through my 4th total playthrough (once on launch, once about 6mo later, one on the DLC launch and one now) and the last two have been noticeable in terms of quality improvements. I'm playing modded to shit, but only have had a few crashes. Police feel fine now, I'm not using anything that alters their spawn logic. Just about the only thing I've not enjoyed still is driving, even modded to hell lmao

  • thanks for coming to my rule
  • Etymology nerd on YouTube has a video on this! It's basically how we put people in our phones now, such as Alex (neighbor) and Alex (work), two names I actually have saved in my phone. They're more based on relationship than occupation now.

    Edit: (neighbor) not (phone)

  • Self perception
  • It's all society. Always has been. Always will be. There are some very specific biological differences in the two sexes, and we've used those real differences to decide a bunch of fake differences we stick to out of convention. There's an idea of what a man is in our collective unconscious, an archetypal "man", and that's what people refer to, but that archetype is breaking down. Man, woman, gender in general. We're realizing that those distinctions aren't useful, and sometimes, maybe even most of the time, are detrimental.

That all said, humans are social creatures. That pressure, that idea of "man" is all around us. It's absolutely understandable that people can still generalize what "man" is. The concept doesn't have to be based on anything tangible to be relevant to our species.

  • Self perception
  • Same question for women. Gender is only useful insofar as we decide it is. We have an inherent nature to categorize and differentiate, and in some cases that makes a lot of sense, but outside of strictly biological facts, that distinction between genders is nebulous at best.

Like religion, gender identity is personal, even if it stems from society. No two people will share the same opinion, it'd probably be weird if they did, and as long as they're not using their opinion as basis for fact, do whatever you want, man woman or anyone in between, outside, or around the spectrum.

  • Self perception
  • I mean, it pretty clearly implies "feeling like a man" is only a bad thing. That "feeling like a man" can only be done in ways that make others feel inferior. That seems pretty misandrous. to me. Enough to call misandry right away? No. But between that and the name, they're starting to set a theme.

  • What do people carry in post apocalypse show/ movies
  • Presumably they're only carrying guns they have ammo for, or guns they want others to think they have ammo for. If you got it, may as well use it, and if others think you got it, they may not be so quick to use their own. Also ammo isn't that hard to make.

  • It's a cruel system
  • To me it's more to do with mentality. Most of the people earning that much are completely full of themselves, "I'm a problem solver I get things DONE" kinds of people. To have them come to someone they probably don't see as such for a task that is imminently solvable by just looking at the screen for 30 seconds, or typing a quick search is at best off-putting.

  • In my experiences, most places with a chicken sandwich have a basic, no topping sandwich, and one they call "deluxe" "supreme" or whatever strengthening adjective you choose, which has lettuce, tomato, mayo, etc.

  • The design is very human
  • It's the topology of the object. Essentially flatten the object into a 2 dimensional plane. Something like a mug or donut will have a hole in it after flattening, these items have 1 hole. Different objects flatten into a different number of holes. It's really hard for me to parae anything more complicated than 1 hole with my head, but that's essentially the process.

I do not recall the vsauce video explicitly, but this should be the logic they're using. It gets waaay more difficult to parae on something like a human, with a bunch of different tracts and splits and shit.

  • there are no accidents rule
  • What in the useless statistics Batman? So because a large percentage of people who identify as furries have viewed (not actively view, not prefer, quite simply have viewed) furry pornography, the entire furry community must be a sex thing? That misses more than a few possibilities. Fuck, I've seen gay porn, and I'm not gay. As far as "learning something sexual about someone", unless you're calling learning someone has a fursona learning something sexual about them, this whole thing is a non-sequiter based entirely on anecdotal experience.

  • Filter all automayed archive posts?

    Hey folks.

I've tried to get a filter working for all of the "this is an automated archive" posts from reddit. They're pretty useless to me, as there's very rarely any engagement, and they tend to show up en masse when a community decides to just mass archive from reddit.

I've attempted to set up a keyword filter with "automated" "automated archive" and "this is an automated archive" but with no success. I assume the keyword filters are only looking at the title text, not the description. Is setting a filter like this possible at present time?

Being flashbanged by my fingerprint sensor

Hey folks. Got a pixel 7 pro, and it's been alright, except suddenly, if I press the fingerprint sensor on the lock screen for just a split second, it makes the WHOLE SCREEN go full-brightness, with a green tinge. I know it's always lit up the scanner area, which is all it lights up if I hold the sensor, but if I release it early it's actually very uncomfortable. Any suggestions besides the obvious "don't let go 5head"? Is this an android version bug, a hardware issue? Anyone else had this happen?

    Edit: autocorrect

    Edit 2: !

why is there a weird carpeted step in my closet?

I just moved into a new house, and it has a weird step in the bottom of the closet, that is covered in carpet. I've seen this before, and it could just be coincidence, but is there possibly a weird architecture or design reason for this, or is it just a quirk?
