If you need a spatula, you need a spatula. It'd be best to get a metal one second hand, but unless you carve one from a hunk of wood or get one from a friend or family, you'll have to buy one somehow. Best to get one that is durable and innert, like stainless steel. America's test kitchen does a good video on them if you're a nerd like me :)
Wood is good for non-stick pans, I think. And so far wood has not tried to kill us yet, unless you make it too pointy and do the 'ol sliparoo in the kitchen and fall on thine spatula.

I thought this was a surprisingly competently done and imaginative movie, they really did a lot with what they had, and it punches above its weight. The cosmic horror element is superb.

Killer Force, also known as The Diamond Mercenaries, is a 1976 thriller film directed by Val Guest and starring Telly Savalas, Peter Fonda and Christopher Lee. It was a co-production between the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, United Kingdom (post production at Twickenham), and the United States and was filmed primarily in Namibia (at the time of filming part of South Africa). Its plot is about a gang of criminals who plan a major robbery of a diamond mine.
Val Guest called it "a very tough picture to make."
This is a pure cheese b-movie with all the drippings of the 70's, and an odd cast to say the least. It was fun to see Christopher Lee in a commando-like role though.
There's nothing remarkable about this film, but if you like low budget movies to chuckle at, it may be worth a try.

According to this, urban farming seems surprisingly viable due to yields being so much higher than big ag farming. If we grew on rooftops and replaced parking lots with growing space, a city could theoretically become food self sufficient.
You may want to consider getting involved with a local mutual aid group. The connections you make now will likely pay off in the future.

The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961 720p) - 60 years old, yet disturbingly accurate
Title: The Day the Earth Caught FireSummary: When the U.S. and Russia unwittingly test atomic bombs at the same time, it alters the nutation (axis of rotation)...
This was an eerie one to watch due to how accurately it depicts our future over 60 years ago, if for a different reason.
Directed by Val Guest, this is a classic grounded hard sci-fi, like something you'd read out of an Analog Magazine of the era. The dialog is surprisingly snappy and well written, and the special effects are quite well done, if used sparingly. The acting is pretty damn solid as well. It's filmed in a fairly unique style in the way it flows, and while a slow burn with little action, I found the writing and concept compelling.
The story centers around a down-and-out British journalist for the Daily Express, Peter Stenning. Struggling to finish a story and constantly being bailed out by his friend, a new lead on strange happenings by the US and USSR sets him on the path to be able to write the story of a lifetime, certainly front page material, at least.
This was a labor of love by the director, who had to beg and plead to multiple studios before one finally gave him a modest budget to get it made, and I think he did a pretty fantastic job. Rotten Tomatoes seems to agree, as it received a rating of 86% there.
This film covers a pretty broad set of themes, including:
- News Media
- Social Class
- Gender Politics (for the 60's, anyway)
- And a couple other things that would spoil the story :)
If that sounds interesting, I highly recommend it. I came away from it being pretty darn satisfied and impressed.
Turning automotive engines into modular chemical plants to make green fuels (discussion: is this a useful tech?)
MIT spinout Emvolon is repurposing automotive engines to create mini chemical plants next to sources of methane to generate green methanol and other chemicals.
As per the title, I'm curious of your thoughts on this concept. Methane from landfills are already used as a source of energy in many cases, but according to the EPA, a tremendous amount are not, and contribute 14% to the US's methane gas emissions.
I'm not terribly happy how the inventors of this tech are trying to keep it a trade secret, and their estimate that an installation will cost between 1 to 10 million takes it out of reach a backyard solarpunk from taking advantage of it (though it sounds like it could be DIY'd with enough know-how).
On the face of it, if it makes more landfills become viable as a source of energy to reduce use of fossil fuels, it seems like it could be a useful tool against climate change. The best case scenario would be that a local energy co-op is able to afford the initial startup cost to get it operational, ideally using repurposed engines from used cars.
