It's continuing resolutions all the way down
I always enjoy when someone who has evidently never read anything about what actual socialists think stream-of-consciousness debunks socialism as if these sorts of ideas aren't literally some of the first things Marx and Engles write about.
And their phones do this waaay more aggressively and noone complains.
Thank you for posting this. I was gonna try and paraphrase it because what is being said is so spot on to this sentiment.
This is just plain false, and also, like, aggressively defeatist. It feels to me, whenever someone says something like this, the intention is to kill off any hope in the people who aren't terminally fatalistic about the prospect of any working class representation within the American politcal system, which makes you less optimistic than a Russian Serf in 1860, and the Wobblies and other trade unionists who were literally murdered and jailed.
Like, not to pick on you, because there are a lot of other people in this thread expressing the same opinion, but to whatever degree what you're saying is true, it is only as true as the sentiment you are expressing is prevalent.
I think the point is more "As if by magic, all of the institutional barriers we hear about any time something good is on the docket suddenly are non-issues as soon as we're doing something unthinkably evil". If you want to make good counter arguments you need to work off of a "steelman" position of your opposition, otherwise it comes off as bad faith.
Congress of Vienna was the first time historically I have really read about nation states pearl clutch about "international laws" and "rules based international order", I might argue that it predates WW1 by about 100 years.
I get why in this momement where Ukraine appears to be dependent on NATO support, and where it seems like NATO is required to counterbalence Russia, why people would support the existence of it. But, it is absolutely a tool of US global hegemonic power. The US has committed some incredibly horrific acts to secure its position as sole global super power and NATO as a tool to develop and maintain that power has been used to that end, and will continue to be used in that way. We should not confuse tools of imperial power projection to be a good thing.
Coincidentally my windows PC needed to update when I got back to it. It took like 15 minutes and 2 restarts. I legit pulled out my Ubuntu laptop and Sudo apt-get upgraded that bitch just to flex on Bill Gates.
I don't know about all the arguing and snark, but... I've been using Ubuntu (laugh it up) on my work laptop for the last 3ish years, and the vast majority of the time it really is "click install updates. wait 2 minutes. ok every program on your computer is up to date, just don't forget to restart Firefox". Can't think of a time where updating sucked. Sometimes I even go through the terminal just because it makes me feel cool to be a hackerman.
I dread updating my windows pc at home. Cuts into my WoW time too much.
Imagine swearing fealty to a monarch in 2024.
It's a little more complex than that. He, like, was buying shares, blew past the 5% ownership disclosure point, failed to disclose, was forced to disclose his stake. He was then offered a seat on the board, didn't like the lack of control, and made a meme offer on the remaining stake to take the company private, tried to pull out, and was forced to buy the company he didn't want to buy by the board of directors who didn't want him to buy it.
He's the recent Adam Conover interview with the details: https://youtu.be/sxG2Y3E0uEY?si=r0VMY7s3iZ9uaP39
I think I used to play Halo 3 with that guy
Oh I get it now. You're saying that "there won't be a next election". Careful with the self fufulling prophecies. If you don't want to succumb to that, I recommend getting involved locally. Whoever you trust electorally will need your help now to build a bulwark for 2026, and getting your hands dirty will help you get over the pessimism.
I think it's more "a lot of people would really like someone to significantly change the system of politics, and Trump promised to be a wrecking ball... oh and btw... wtf do you mean Facism. Are you like my Highschool history teacher or something? Isn't Hitler dead"
Occam's razor isn't "the simplest, most reductive answer is usually right" it's "entities must not be created beyond nessecity". It argues that when you have two hypotheses which have equal explanatory power, you should usually choose the one that has fewer elements (assumptions, new rules). The classic example is a heliocentric solar system vs a geocentric one. Geocentric needs very complex laws of motion to get the sidereal motion correct, heliocentric doesn't.
"everyone is racist" doesn't have the same explanatory power as the detailed analysis you're seeing journalists and your fellow lemmy users construct of Biden, Harris, and the Democratic establishments failure to recognize the need for loud populist messaging and unforced errors depressing voter enthusiasm, therefore we cannot apply Occam's razor to the situation.
Say it then. We're in the period of time where we must critically evaluate the failures of the political machine that delivered this. I'm trying my level best to provide detailed, informative assessment of what I'm seeing without resorting to vitriol or anger, both online and in real life. If you have additional details, provide them. This is the time for vigorous debate, and reassessment, and I see the Democrats as much more of allies than the Republicans, so if you, or any other liberal can get past the phase where you're upset with the leftists who have broadly provided critical support for the Democratic coalliton, I welcome your input.
First, I voted. I have never missed an election local or national, and I am actively involved in my community. Second, I criticize Democrats primarily on this platform because, one they're the parry I need to be more effective, and two there aren't any Trump voters on this community. If there were Trumper in chat saying outlandish shit, I would want the smoke with them too.
Except money evidently doesn't buy it by itself. If it did Harris would have won. Effective messaging (Where is the Dem Joe Rogan? They kicked the closest thing they have out of the DNC for expressing broadly popular opinions) and playing to the base of people willing to vote for you (Dems will never get those Republican voters no matter how many immigrants they promise to stop at the border) wins elections.
Well 71 million Trump voters over 244 million eligible voters is 29%.
