Such thing as a BIFL floor pump?
  • The 50 year old Japanese one at my grandparent's place while I was over there still works, it uses a clip to hold against the Woods valve, and no pressure gauge so I have to guess when it's filled by feel.

Looks similar to this random one I found on the internet. Maybe it's too low tech for your needs.

  • I've had the same laptop for seven years. Don't know much about them besides buy a Toshiba. Is this Hp Essential Laptop a good deal?
  • It's a barebones one (hence the "Essential"), if your Toshiba laptop was a good spec, that one might honestly be better, if it was slow then this might be an upgrade. All depends on what you need out of a laptop.

Screen is 1366x768 so it will be hard to do much multitasking at all and you can't view 1080p HD video at full resolution.

For the price in USD? I think it's not good value. A used corporate surplus laptop would be far better. ~$200 would be a good value price for this spec.

  • What discussion you know you are on the wrong side of?
  • This is the best practice, especially for AskLemmy but it also applies to news and other media threads. It's best to put your personal thoughts and opinions in a top-level reply, while keeping the post body to clarifications or summary of the posted question or media.

  • Why do you allow misinformation communities like endlesswar?
  • Sure, we should not tolerate intolerance, "No Bigotry" is rule #1 here so if you see that then please report it. Misinformation, though? That's the main thing OP is talking about and they gave a few examples, they are propaganda but not intolerance.

  • 'You deceived millions of us!': Trump fans tell him they're outraged over Navy pick
  • What the hell were any Trump-voting servicemembers expecting? That Harris and Walz were making stuff up when they brought up time after time how much Trump hates servicemembers and his country if they get in the way of his needs?

  • Why do you allow misinformation communities like endlesswar?
  • The problem is, who is the arbiter of that? There are essentially 3 types of moderation styles here:

Laissez-faire: Let people do whatever as long as it doesn't actively hurt anyone. People can govern themselves and serious incidents are expected to be reported and dealt with. Some jerks will tiptoe around the rules but will eventually get caught. Lemm.ee, lemmy.ca and some others follow this.

Casual enforcement of admin-philosophy: Most topics outside of politically contentious ones are not strictly monitored. Mods/admins will root out communities, comments and posts that actively go against the narrative, particularly on threads on political topics like Ukraine, Palestine, etc.. Lemmy.world and lemmy.ml follow this.

Strict enforcement of admin-philosophy: do not tolerate any potentially harmful statements (to that instance's narrative or vibe). Any violation will be removed and repeated violations get you banned. This philosophy can be reasonable like Beehaw.org, which I think works very well for them and makes it a welcoming safe space, because there is no tolerance for bigotry and jerks. It can also be unreasonable like lemmygrad.ml, where dissent to the pro-Russian narrative is swiftly dealt with.

Admins of other instances should ban users that go against their philosophy from reaching their servers, if they follow the latter two styles of moderation. That's how it is with federation, sometimes different instances have conflicting philosophies (the vegan one for example). It's up to each admin to decide whether a foreign Fediverse user belongs in their kingdom. The moderation style that lemmy.ca has lets it be a good neutral place to discuss various drama and lore from other servers.

  • Why do you allow misinformation communities like endlesswar?
  • We have had multiple communities of that nature, all heavily downvoted. A previous example was Geopolitics where Russian and Conservative narratives were pushed daily. Eventually the creator, poster and community mod gave up, left and deleted it.

You can always block communities or instances that you don't want to see. Every instance has its own policy on what types of communities are allowed, and how strict they must align with admin values.

I frequently disagree with Russian apologists, but pre-emptive restriction of viewpoints I don't like doesn't make for good discussion, even if in my eyes many of the arguments are on dubious ground. You see many complaints of lemmy.world and lemmy.ml admins enforcing certain policies and worldviews sitewide, which is fine for them to do, but not every server has to ascribe to that. Some servers restrict community creation to mods/admins, some like beehaw.org have a limited but curated set of communities. !conservative@lemm.ee is a hotbed of clown-take articles, doesn't mean I think they should be banned.

If you see posts with harmful misinformation, or harmful behaviour by the mod of such a community, please report it to the lemmy.ca admins. Demonstrating a pattern of harmful behaviour with evidence will get the mod and community banned.

I vehemently disagree with an article posted there that having their experimental Mach-whatever missiles means that Russia and China's going to get everything they want in a conflict, to me it's a total bluff. But it was written by a Canadian so it would seem it belongs there, even if it is indeed a blatantly pro-Russian narrative.

Perhaps as a solution going forward: new communities start as private communities for the instance only, and then upon admin review and approval can be federated to other instances?

  • Pointless AI server farms coming to an unregulated ocean near you!
  • Yeah I have not analyzed whether they think they have enough power to run 10,000 Nvidia H100s on solar but it is still more hands off if they could. Back of the napkin ideas would say floating pontoons or barges with solar panels would at least make it theoretically possible. No way a 200 n.mi. cable is going to be able to transmit the power you need without specialized infrastructure, and it appears a country's EEZ includes a claim over harnessing wind power as a resource.

wind power is supposedly cheaper anyways, with maintenance included in the calculation

Most available maintenance calculations probably deal with wind power on land, remote mountains, and a short distance offshore where a technician can get to multiple sites in a day. Getting a specialist out to the middle of absolutely nowhere by boat or capable seaplane if they are really in "international waters" sounds expensive and a good chunk of engineers and technicians would not be interested in making the trip even at a significant premium.

What are your thoughts on Canada's latest amendments to the Copyright Act?

The federal government recently passed two bills into law, C-244 and C-294. These make it not a copyright violation to break or bypass a digital access control to software/hardware you own have legitimate access to, for the purposes of diagonstics/maintenance/repair, and interoperability respectively. Article from The Sarnia Observer

iFixit has applauded the move but says it still keeps bans on the sale and sharing of tools designed primarily for digital lock bypass.

    What are your thoughts?

An example from Japan's Proportional Representation system

The ruling coalition in Japan's Lower House is facing a resounding defeat, and an opposition coalition government could be on the horizon.

This was made possible in part by Proportional Representation. Looking at the latest election data:

    https://www.nhk.or.jp/senkyo/database/shugiin/00/tousen_toukaku_hirei.html

The ones with a white cell on the right column are PR representative-elects, and grey cells are the candidates that won their local district in a traditional tally.

One major beneficiary is the Japanese Communist Party (violet), who only won 1 race in the FPTP portion, but because they had sizeable supports nation wide, has 7 total seats at the governing table.

This doesn't only help 3rd parties. The incumbent (red) and leading opposition (blue) parties locked in dead heats in many races, have elected some candidates from the PR field. That way the voice of the group that made 2nd place are not fully lost on the final result.

Clipboard Copy Paste History Function I Accidentally Encountered with Fcitx

Some Lemmy user at one point had asked about a "multi-paste" feature, if there was a way to use keyboard shortcuts to display multiple clipboard items and copy/paste them out at will (this user mentioned similar to RTS games they like to play). If someone can find that post, can you notify them and direct them here, please? I'm having trouble locating it but I recollect that it was within the last 3 months. Edit: I found the post!

Somehow this was stuck in my mind when I accidentally pressed a keyboard shortcut, that showed my last 5 copied items. This isn't exactly what the user was looking for but I thought I'd publicize it here.

If you use Fcitx (because you need multi-language input) from the fcitx5 packages, then you may already have installed the clipboard add-on. You can use fcitx with just one keyboard layout. By default, it's activated by Ctrl+semicolon and shows the 5 last entries, but the number can be configured.
