Kadyrov claims to have received a Cybertruck from Musk, "soon to be sent into battle against Ukraine"
  • Not even "just" against Ukraine. Kadyrov is pro-honour-killing, has advocated nuking Ukraine, claimed to be sending his own 14-year-old son to fight, and has been described by Human Rights Watch as being responsible for such widespread torture that it is a crime against humanity.

  • What's the oldest game anyone here has played in 2024?
  • Does a remake of the first Wipeout count? It was technically made very recently, as the source code was leaked in 2022 and a couple of projects re-built the game based on that, but the original came out in 1995

If that doesn't count then it's Battle Engine Aquila from 2003

  • How often do you feed your cat wet food compared to dry food?
  • Mine likes to graze throughout the day and would ignore the entire second half of any wet food I gave him, so dry food is the better option for us. I get him the best stuff I can and he gets stuck right in whenever I pour some more of it. I give him fancy wet food as a treat every so often too, just on the understanding that it will be somewhat wasted

  • The AFU destroyed a bridge over the Seim River in the Glushkovsky District of the Kursk region. 30 settlements and 700 Russian troops are reportedly surrounded.
  • Honestly it don't think it matters much if they hold it in the long run. Ukraine isn't likely to be trying to annex it, and it forces Russia to divert resources from other fronts to handle it. If Ukraine can make retaking it very costly then even if Russia succeeds, Russia has had to spend a whole bunch of lives and materiel to gain literally zero Ukrainian land

  • Secret Russian Counter-Drone EW System Recovered by Ukraine in Kursk Region
  • Ukrainian military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko commented that he believes the Volnorez system’s capability to be overstated, describing it as practically useless. He argues that it has been deployed on the battlefield for a year without significantly impacting on the success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s (AFU) kamikaze drone attacks.

I know nothing about this guy's credentials, but this was my first thought. I have seen so many tanks getting destroyed by drones. Are these systems not getting deployed or do they not work?

  • Right of way in car traffic is now decided trough mortal combat. How do you perceive this will affect everyday life?
  • They did something similar in a big refurbishment of the town centre of the place I grew up in (in the UK). No road markings, roads and pavements both done with Belgian blocks, and just some big stone bollards to separate the pedestrians and traffic. Turns out drivers kept hitting the bollards so now they all have hi-vis reflective strips on them. Which definitely did not grant me much confidence in the driving skills of my town.

  • Zen Z
  • To be honest, even if it were completely true... okay? If analogue clocks are on the way out then there's no particular need for anyone to be able to read them any more. I like them a lot visually and have a couple in my home, but there's nothing so special about them that people would be missing out by using digital clocks instead

  • What's your favourite country and why?
  • I think in the spirit of things I will answer with my favourite country that I do not have any connection to and have never visited: Finland. Finns seem to just go hard at everything. The music that comes out of their country is awesome. Their motorsports culture feels like they actually figured out how to prioritise fun over everything else. The language inspired Tolkien's elvish. Sahti is delicious. The pizza Berlusconi is hilarious, and as a haggis-loving Scot the idea of making a derided local cuisine into high-class excellence out of spite appeals to me. Somehow Finland maintained an incredibly unique culture despite being the battleground of two bigger neighbours for 700 years, and I am so glad that we all get to enjoy the things that they bring to the world

  • Spreading of the 100 biggest Lemmy communities
  • It's essentially where reddit's old Chapo Trap House community went after reddit banned them in 2020. It started federating with the rest of the fediverse some time last year, but there was a bit of a culture clash between it and some other larger instances and several of them defederated it
