It's not so much people being worried about wasting it, as much as they're worried about paying someone to continue fueling spirals of addiction. People can be homeless due to any number of different factors, so I hate to assume someone's circumstances, but it's impossible to know when giving cash is helping or making things worse.

My place of work is a nonprofit that coordinates with a variety of local social services, so I donate to those causes each year instead and help others connect to the resources they offer when I can.

Depends on the game. Some of them, absolutely. Roblox is one that comes to mind, probably Fortnite as well. And one shouldn't even start on mobile games.

Just gotta be careful, a lot of them may still need magnets. Some trip the alarm if forced, while the magnet acts as both a disarm and a release.

These devices will run HarmonyOS Next, which is Huawei's new OS. It's not Android/does not incorporate AOSP but is based on the Linux kernel, and is proprietary/locked down and not FOSS.

I think the worry is that they are capable of doing to Lemmy what they did to Reddit: regurgitating content or producing astroturfed content while appearing like authentic users.

My parents at least are more reasonable (despite still being reluctant to give up on WeChat), but I have an aunt that has definitely fallen into this trap. She uses it for medical advice as well, and Dr. WeChat has a lot of...interesting opinions.

There are definitely bots mining fediverse content as well. When the Reddit exodus was ongoing, there were entire Lemmy instances with no users but bots. Not posting or reposting, just...watching and waiting, I guess.

Not that it's of any consolation, just better to assume that nowhere is safe from being mined for AI training.
