  • Heh, well they are certainly unafraid of being perceived as self-centered!

Better when others are the ones to hype someone up with a high superlative like this guy I found:

In an informal poll at a 1990 cosmology conference, Witten received the largest number of mentions as "the smartest living physicist".

    Edward Witten

Oh Mr. Musk, why must you do the silly stuff… so many big, expensive distractions (to say the very least)…

  • Interesting. Just looked at Mlem for a minute and for some reason the Voyager UI agrees with me more.

The funny thing is Mlem offers higher contrast between different UI elements yet it is easier for me to differentiate between those elements in the lower contrast way that Voyager presents them.

Reavers wouldn't touch DuckDuckGo, it's half dead. Which SearXNG instance do you use?

    alt-text

Two horizontally stitched screenshots comparing a search for “Reavers GIF” on DuckDuckGo and Google in Safari iOS (private tabs). DDG presented zero Firefly/Serenity relevant results while Google found them exclusively.

Hopefully a privacy-focused yet fast instance for US West Coast cheapskates who probably should pony up for Kagi, buttttttttttt

Incredible progress on Bing AI over the past 19 months: totally won't summarize (fake) webpages it can't read and hallucinate about dinosaur playgrounds

    alt-text

A user asks Bing/Copilot chat to summarize an invented article:

    [User] summarize

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/29/us/dinosaurs-found-roaming-playground.html

    Copilot

The article from The New York Times reports a surprising and amusing incident where life-sized dinosaur replicas were found roaming a playground in a small town. These realistic models, part of a local museum's exhibit, were accidentally released due to a security malfunction. The sight of dinosaurs in the playground caused quite a stir among the residents, especially the children, who were both thrilled and startled. The museum has since apologized and retrieved the dinosaurs, ensuring such an incident won't happen again. The event has sparked a lot of local interest and laughter, turning into a memorable story for the community[1].

Note this is problematic for a number of reasons including someone who wants to summarize a real article/thread won’t be informed an accurate summary may be impossible.

This home screen theme isn't my style, but I like how customized it is!

I’d like to try heavily theming my home screen, paradoxically while keeping icons quite recognizable.

    Evolutionarily disadvantaged rule 💩🛻

    alt-text

“David Attenborough” (a soundalike voice) explains the Cybertruck's parasitic relationship with flatbed trailers; transcript:

    >Here we see the Cybertruck has formed a peculiar symbiotic relationship with the larger flatbed trailer species. Evolutionarily disadvantaged, the Cybertruck has come up with a clever way to transport itself long distances.

    >By attaching itself to the flatbed trailer, the Cybertruck can reliably move about without risking injury to its fragile exoskeleton or internal organs. What the flatbed trailer gets in return for this kindness, science has yet to discover.

    Source

    >I wondered who had made the video and found myself on Reddit, in r/CyberStuck, where the video was originally posted. The creator of the fake Attenborough video, who has since deleted the post, explains in the comments that they wrote the script and edited the video, and for source material, they used "a bunch of Cybertruck fanboys on YouTube, Whistlindiesel, and also the lovely people on this fair subreddit."
