RFK Jr. attacked the CDC’s ‘fascism’ and likened vaccinating children to abuse by the Catholic Church
  • When I was a kid, my grandma would send me to a nearby farm to get raw milk. It was then brought to a boil at home, the top skimmed, for making pastries, and then consumed. It was way better tasting than store bought, but it was boiled.

  • Since people have asked: SMART Recovery and resources.

DISCLAIMER: I'm a SMART volunteer, a meeting facilitator, among other things. I do this to give back. SMART is essentially run by volunteers.

    SMART Recovery US website: https://smartrecovery.org/

There are others world wide. A web search with SMART Recovery (language/country) should give you the right result)

    https://smartrecoveryglobal.org/

has resources for countries without an established branch

Also, a link to a non-official recovery server, (there are also other program rooms) that leans SMART: https://discord.gg/6YGQFR3b where 1000s of people with addiction issues hang out, as well as many experienced volunteers. We call it "the support group in your pocket"

SMART is the leading science-based addiction peer self-support organization world wide. Non-profit. Meetings are free and confidential, with thousands of online and face to face meetings. There are 1000s of meetings weekly world-wide.

There are publications, like the participant handbook, which are a paid, but very affordable resource, not necessary but very helpful. That said, most of the material is available free of charge on the website. The handbook simply provides a structured way to understand the concepts and tools.

Spirituality, like higher powers, is not needed, that is left to the individual.

The program is is based on self empowerment, behavioral training, how to learn to cope with what leads us to addictive behaviors.

The program is not strictly abstinence oriented. It's about identifying goals, and help you achieve them. It supports therapy, professionally prescribed meds, it's not adverse to moderation and harm reduction, as current addiction treatment research supports.

SMART doesn't shame, doesn't stigmatize, doesn't do labels. We are people with an addiction management problem, not alcoholics, or drug addicts or whatever.

There are no steps. It's a 4 point program. Points (or areas) can be approached individually or at the same time:

    1. Build and maintain motivation
    2. Cope with urges and cravings
    3. Manage thoughts, feelings and behavior
    4. Lead a balanced life

The program is oriented towards the addictive behaviors, and doesn't focus on the substance or maladaptive behavior , but how to deal with it. It works for Alcohol, nicotine, drugs, and for things like porn addiction, eating disorders, gambling...

The program is considered one of multiple pathways to recovery, does not claim to be the only way. Many combine it with 12 step, or whatever helps them also.

I hope this helps. If anybody has any questions, please ask.

"Have you tried not being bipolar?"
  • I'm learning things from my journey. One is that a support network is very good. I'm lucky in that regard. OTOH, I'm slowly learning that even though desirable, it's not on others to deal with my problems. If they do I'm grateful, but I must accept that my condition is mine. Also, I've become very self conscious about my mood changes, much smaller and quite manageable, and can often mitigate the effects.

I had an alcohol problem, the old "self-medication thing", and found SMART Recovery, a science based peer support organization. They help learn very practical emotional regulation and coping strategies, a sort of DIY cognitive behavioral toolkit. That has proved immensely useful.

  • "Have you tried not being bipolar?"
  • My mother, who knows and supports my medication, and understands the swings, Is always telling me about this vitamin, or that herb, and often advocates walks in nature. Before diagnosis and medication, when I was in the lows, she would try to help with some of these, especially the nature walks. I would tell her that sure, it was proven it helps, but I'f I havent managed to get in the shower for a week, do you expect me to go hiking?

She was supportive and well meaning, and I appreciate the effort, but yeah fuck many of these.

  • What does masturbating or having sex physically feel like to you guys?
  • The strictly physical part: Imagine that sneeze that just doesn't want to come out, almost there, almost, almost... and the BAAAM! Or when you are constipated, and you try to evacuate, and sit on the throne for half an hour and suddenly WHAM!! you are two pounds lighter. Multiply by 100

  • What unintended ADHD medication were you taking before you realized?
  • I'm in the middle of diagnosis. I do have Bipolar and have been medicated for 4 years or so. My shrink and I suspect that ADHD is there. It seems to be a common comorbidity. I was self-medicating with alcohol, until I got to a very bad place.

Both bipolar and ADHD have a frightening percentage of substance abuse, often as a form of self medication.

I went to the shrink around the time when I got sober. Quitting drinking and meds literally saved my life.

BTW, I got sober thanks to SMART Recovery. SMART is science based and behavior oriented, so even if you don't have an addiction problem (substances and/or behaviors), You can learn a lot of stuff applicable to behavioral problems. Much of the program is based on Cognitive Behavioral therapies, no higher power required. Confidential. Free.

  • All the other brands went along
  • While I personally prefer this, I'm going to guess that the majority of people are generally not going to be using more than 2 or three usb ports at once. My take is that for most people, 2 Cs, an A, DP or HDMI would be optimal.

The availability of BT and wifi peripherals make this acceptable for many.

I still have a cutting plotter that uses RS232, but that's connected to an oldish desktop, on the network, so a laptop never gets connected physically.

I'm not saying that this is good, simply that this is probably acceptable for many.

  • ‘It’s not drought - it’s looting’: the Spanish villages where people are forced to buy back their own drinking water
  • Bullshit. Spanish bottled water is spring water, not filtered water. It is not oily, period. Give us lab data, proof. All bottled water must pass testing by independent labs. Water in coastal areas is often not great tasting, but 100% safe. This is because many networks are centuries old, and can have infiltration from seawater, but it's all 100% human safe. You'll find a ton of areas in Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands where tap water doesn't taste great. Water in Madrid, and other non coastal areas, for example is so good, it's often said it could be bottled and sold.

As for treatment, it's properly treated, it's not like in the US where you can get amoeba from tap water, or have flammable tap water!

  • Walmart just leveled with Americans: China won’t be paying for Trump’s tariffs, in all likelihood you will
  • Tariffs make companies able to compete better within the walled garden, but weakens their competitiveness worldwide. It creates a race to the bottom inside the garden, but makes them weak outside the border. They also makes prices increasefor the local buyers. Costs get passed along, it's not as if manufacturers are going to absorb increases, they don't need to. GM, Ford, Chrysler are all going to pass them on (as any domestic manufacturer)

  • Am I welcome here?
  • If anyone wants more info, feel free to ask. Tons of online/in person meetings, free resources and stuff. Also, there is a 24/7 recovery Discord server (not SMART exclusive, but with a lot of SMART activity, non-official, ) with a ton of nice people, which also has 12 step rooms, if that's your thing.

  • Am I welcome here?

I'm a SMART Recovery Facilitator. We support informed choice. SMART provides tools, and you do you. I'm personally abstinence focused. Am I welcome here, or should I GTFO?

What I mean is: Is Stop drinking is a 12 step only sub, or is it a Stop drinking sub

Is there a way to watch YouTube without ads in iPad OS like in Android

I’m usually an Android/Linux user, but also use an iPad. In both Android and Linux I manage to have a mostly ad free experience, with Piped, for example, or with a plugin combo in Firefox. Is there a way to have this on the iPad? The whole no plugin thing in iPad Firefox is quite maddening.

    Rustdesk alternative?

I've been using rustdesk for while, and it works very well for me. The news of it being somewhat opaque, and developed from China, makes me a bit nervous.

Is there a FOSS equivalent that won't make me jump through hoops, and be easily installed by someone else remotely?

I would like to be able to have it run at startup in Linux and windows, have a fairly complete feature set, like file transfer, copy paste, etc.

Also it'd be great if it could be easily installed by someone else remotely. I do SMB support, usually onsite, which is why it's not cost effective to pay for a Teamviewer or Anydesk license.

I'm taking a look through flathub, but recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Goldilocks distro?

What do you consider to be the "Goldilocks" distro? the one that balances ease of install and use, up-to-date, stability, speed, etc... You get the idea.

I'm not a newb, these last few years I've lived in the Debian and derivatives side of things, but I've used RH, Slackware, Puppy :), and older stuff, like mandrake/mandriva and others. Never tried Suse or Arch, and while Nix looks appealing, I need something to put in production rapidly. I have tried Kinoite in a VM, but I couldn't install something (which I can't remember), and that turned me off.

Oh I'm on Mint right now, because lazy, but it's acting up with a couple of VMs, which I need, I really don't have the time or desire to maybe spend two days troubleshooting, and I'm a bit fed up with out of date pkgs.

Why is folder sharing between host and guest in KVM so hard?

I'm having the hardest tine setting up a shared folder between a Linux host and Win11guest. I want to get rid of dual boot, but there are a few programs that I use which are Win only. I have set up a VB VM, but I want a fine tuned KVM VM. On VB sharing is trivial, but I can't get it to work in KVM. I have the host sharing the folder with Samba, and can see it from another Linux VM, but not from windows. Any clues?

I have looked everywhere (so it's probably in front of my face). Where are saved posts? Are they in my instance, in lemmy? How can I find them?
