Listening struggle

I stopped learning Japanese in a classroom about three years ago, with passing N4 being my biggest achievement. Since then, I've been occasionally doing my Anki reviews and trying to read and listen from time to time.

As a molecular biologist, I was thrilled to find a couple of great thematic podcasts: Researchat.fm and 研エンの仲. A game-changer for me, though, was Nihongo Con Teppei, which I could actually understand.

The problem with the first two podcasts, which are not designed for Japanese learners in any way, is that while I’ve started to pick up some nouns and phrases over time, I can almost never, for the life of me, grasp the meaning of entire sentences. I can tell they’re discussing a specific topic, but the overall gist almost always eludes me.

Does anyone have advice on how to improve comprehension? I feel like verbs are the trickiest part to understand...

Let people just use what they want, okay? It's their choice.
  • Extraordinary well put.I wish more people would understand that building communities by attracting users from outside is much-much-much more important than to brag about fediverse in your small nerd circle and defederating another server.

  • Probably the easiest boycott you could do, let's do it Lemmy!
  • Listen. Just fuckin listen to me. The moment I joined lemmy every enthusiast was singing praise to the fediverse and how it's easy to maintain the freedom of speach and yada yada yada. What it turned out to be is just constant quarrels between instances, defederations and crap like that while lemmy still fucking struggles to even become a mere shadow of reddit. I fucking hate reddit, I think spez should be covered in fire ants, but by god, looking at how insufferable most vocal lemmy users are, I may get back to reddit, probably as many other lemmy users already did.

  • More Gen Z Americans identify as LGBTQ than as Republican
  • Fuck, that's once again proves my point that many of younger folks treat lgbtq as a fucking subculture. There's no way there are 28% of lgbt people, most of those treat being queer as being trendy. Same sexual preferences and body perception as straight cis, just putting a rainbow flag and dying hair makes them "LGBTQ++" Ricky Gervais was on point in Armageddon

  • I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."
  • Well, I stopped pirating games a long ago because of steam, because of how good it was/is as a service and low prices. I don't think any game publisher should cry about steam prices, because when the AAA game is just released and for a full price, millions of FOMOs run to buy it. And I can wait and see if it's worth it.

  • This split sink
  • Yep, and they are actually awesome! I personally hate washing dishes when there's a pile of them in front of you because of all the splashing. This layout makes cleaning so much easier. Additionally, you can put up some stuff for defrosting in the second sink

  • Sleppy rule
