People love good stories.
Taking a good story written by one person, and then having other people shoehorn a political agenda into it, makes the story less good usually, perhaps even bad.
Or, taking a bad story, and trying to save it by shoving a political agenda into it does not make it a good story either.
I think a lot of the complaints, online, are really about bad stories being presented as good because they have a political agenda attached to them. Hence the pushback we've been discussing in this thread
The YouTube video I linked above explains the position fairly well, it's a very short video, it's even funny.
Your position implies that only people you agree with are able to have a civil discussion, and it's impossible to discuss anything that there is any disagreement on.
These attitudes slow the growth of lemmy.
i want lemmy to be a constructive place where people are not chased away. The habit of the downvote culture here is not helping lemmy grow.
The critical path for a lot of game adaptation is joining friends in a game. So that means your first game is time critical, your friends are already playing, you just downloaded it, the most important thing is to join your social group and have a good time. Immediately.
Anything that gets in the way of the critical path, causes people to switch games, or to refund the game (i.e. they were not able to join their friends)
So even if the first game is a stuttery potato, it's better to have it work immediately, then delay until it's beautiful
I'm happy to talk with people about difficult or sensitive subjects, but throwing around downvotes doesn't encourage good dialog.
Kinda -
There will always be a background level of online misanthropes labeling everything woke, but that only gets attention if there nothing else remarkable about the game.
So if the only online dialog about a game is how woke it is, the game probably isn't very good.
I did not say writing a good game about gay, black, or women is political.
It’s that the game, story, or environment is being sacrificed to shove a political message down your throat.
These statements are different.
I think most people lack that level of self awareness.
I think if the most interesting thing about the game is how woke it is, thats a really bad sign.
Consider Cyberpunk 2077 as an example, there was a hot minute where people were getting their transphobic panties in a bunch over the hermaphroditic ingame advertisements, but There was so much MORE to talk about in cyberpunk 2077 that it wasn't the only discussion about the game (even before it launched).
If I see someone crying “woke bs” without backing anything up I’m going to automatically assume that person is a bigoted moron.
If I see someone downvoting thoughtful comments I'm going to automatically assume that person is a closed minded moron.
The majority of complaints about wokeness in games is not that alternative lifestyles exist....
It's that the game, story, or environment is being sacrificed to shove a political message down your throat.
What people complain about online doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is revenue. If the revenue isn't enough then the discussion about wokeness dominates the discussion... I don't think making bland/bad game "woke" in order to get more attention will save it. Controversy doesn't sell that many games, might make more people aware of a product, but if they already didn't like the product (or were just meh about it) - controversy wont move the needle in a positive direction.
Update: since I'm incapable expressing myself succinctly here. I refer everybody to this nutsa video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJS4JHYgj50 which is my basic position

Most video game developers are not great computer scientists. I'm not saying this with any dispersion, but it's true. If you're going to have a distributed agency model simulated, you have to deal with cross-processor, cross thread, or even cross machine, data structures. Either a lockless data structure, or some locking mechanism that doesn't have a tremendous critical path. It could be outsourced to a database outside of the game engine. But it gets computationally complex

I really like this book, and I think it's relevant to this discussion. It talks about how the original currency in history was not money, but reputation and relationships.
Once you scale out to the point where personal relationships are unsustainable, societies and history transition to something more material. Be it transactional barter, or what we think of is money today.
Fair enough the theory of different economic engines allows both to be centralized or decentralized.
As realized the economic engines that were labeled as communist were very centralized.
How would a decentralized communist society look like? How would different communes compete for scare resources? How would disputes be resolved?

How are you sharing your GPU with multiple VMs?
HyperV has GPU para virtualization
But for qemu, kvm, xen it seems like the best option is to passthrough a GPU to a single VM, unless the GPU supports srvio, which almost all of the retail cards don't.
I head about the woof and gaming on whales project, and they seem to get around this by using only containers for the subdivision.
What methods or options have you used to share a GPU with your VMs?

Cherry MX water damage, suggestions?
Spilled some tea on my keyboard today. Didn't think much of it it's just tea right? My A key started to get sticky. I tore down the keyboard, and found some water damage on the a and s keys.
The s key is still springy, and responds. But it has a blue green hue on the metal contact in the photo.
The a key still works, but is very soggy, and requires greater depression than before.
This is a kinesis gaming RGB keyboard. All of the switches are attached to a metal plate, so to replace a single switch I think I have to unsolder all of the switches so I can get the metal plate off. It's an interesting design
For the moment, I cleaned up 6 years of filth and dirt from the keyboard. Looks pretty clean now from my estimation. For the key itself, I got as much stuff out of it as possible. I soaked the a and s keys in 99% alcohol. And then smash the keys over and over and over and over and over again. Trying to wash the keys from the inside. Right now I have a fan pointed directly at the keys, trying to finish the dry out.
Anybody else have success in rescuing a cherry MX key switch? I'm not opposed to soldering on new key switches, but I don't want to have to solder 28 keys just to reach one
Compact Recycling Setup!
https://factoriobin.com/post/s0zhwv
This recycling system will look at what is available on the logistics network (from the roboport) and will keep recycling anything with more then R (4k by default, set by combinator next to the roboport) items in the logistics network.
Anything that doesn't have 4k in logistics, will get put onto the exit belt for sorting, or storage.
This uses my best effort stack inserters to keep the belt as compact as possible.
This system has reduced my fulgora footprint! most of my recycling belts are empty now, and my trains cannot keep up with the speed of recycling now.
The new UI updates are quite nice for quality mechanics, and the storage chests get bigger with quality is a very welcome change!
Best Effort Stack Inserter
Stack Inserters will wait FOREVER until they can pick up a full stack of input items before dropping them on the destination.
The best effort stack inserter will pick up as many as possible, then drop the stack on the output. This requires a decider combinator to override the stack size if we are holding a less then full stack.

I'm using this to compact up sushibelts with great impact!
How to make a circuit that holds the last signal seen for X ticks, but resets the count down when it sees the signal again?
Currently I have a circuit that keeps the last seen signal for 240 ticks, and at the end of the 240 ticks, if it sees the same input on green, it would restart the click for another 240 ticks.
This is close to what I want, but I would like to reset the clock every time I saw the input again. So if at 200 ticks I saw the input, I want to reset the clock and start again.
The entire time I want to maintain the output signal as constant, even during the reset. Any suggestions on doing this in a single circuit element?
Quality Robot Mall Blueprint with Grinder
https://factoriobin.com/post/x4l8wj
Put the item you want to build in the constant combinator; The 5 assemblers below be set to the recipe for each quality level of the item.
By default each level will buffer 4-5 stacks of a item at a quality level, if the next level up isn't full, start to drop items onto the belt for recycling. (We get to 4 stacks, when we are over 4 stacks, if we need to grind for quality, we will). If the higher level quality exists and is 4 stacks, we wont grind.
Request 5x the ingredients into the requestor chest for each assembler.
No quality modules on the legendary assembler.
Using buffers for the output to pull in any items from the network, including quality upgrades from different production quality levels (the legendary output on the epic production line will move to the legendary buffer)
Lost a good friend two days ago...
Lost a good friend on Nov 11th, I last talked to them on the Oct 27th.
I've spent about 2000 hours with this friend, over three years, so a new friendship, but a deep and recurring one. Lately our schedules have not meshed (Since about February), so I've only see them sporadically.
The first 12 hours were rough, I'm getting better now, but still misty eyed. Given the frequency of our activities there are many things that just remind me of their absence. There is the aspect of losing someone, and that sadness... but there is something more here, with a 2000 hour mental model of someone else's behavior and reactions, the brain feels a little empty now that whenever anything triggers the 'oh we did this', 'oh they would like this'.... it gets short circuited by... and they are gone now.
I've lost people before, quite a few - sadly, but it never really had this level of impact. I suppose there is a proximity / frequency factor in the impact of a loss.
Rest in Peace - General.

> Dr. Roshani Sanghani, MD is the founder of Reisaan Health in Mumbai, India. She is a superspecialist in hormone imbalance in patients with Type 2 and Type 1 diabetes and she is American board-certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. Discover the truth about diabetes management in this eye-opening discussion with Dr. Eric Westman and Dr. Roshni Sogani. In this video, they reveal powerful insights into reversing diabetes through lifestyle changes, nutrition, and low-carb diets, going beyond traditional medical advice. Dr. Sogani, a renowned endocrinologist, shares her journey of moving away from medication-focused treatment and helping patients take control through comprehensive lifestyle solutions. If you've ever felt frustrated by conventional diabetes treatments or wanted to know how to manage diabetes naturally, this video is a must-watch!
She is doing a book circuit for her new book "Turn around Diabetes: The Step-by-Step Guide to Navigate Type 2 (and Type 1) Diabetes with Less Medication"
What makes this really interesting is she focuses on the approach to vegan diabetes management, most vegan food has a large carb to protein ratio, so its a challenging environment in which she has outlined a path to success.

A nice presentation of a study of 99 participants over 6 months and their diabetes control, using a low carb (20% of diet) intervention.
HbA1c down by 1% in 3 months!
20% is a low carb diet, not a ketogenic diet, its 85g of carbs, or about 340 kcal from carbs per day.
I'm really impressed at the improvements in this cohort with a mild dietary intervention, promising work!
MicroFlyer - Aquilo and Back - My Third Ship
https://factoriobin.com/post/e5myni
675 Space Foundation Tiles Big. Aquilo and Back.
After going a little overkill with my second ship (2700 tiles), I decided to see what I could do for the smallest footprint to Aquilo.
Feels like half my ship is circuit networks, that's taking up lots of floor space, but the ship is narrow and easy to expand. The circuit networks uses the new prototype build anything assembler, and it works pretty well on a ship. A single combinator says we want to build repair packs, yellow ammo, and red rockets, and it does the rest.
Fuel and Smelting and Crushing circuits are the same as my second ship BetterJET with the high-low latching.
The cargo space is a bit tight, but it works.
Uses about 700 missiles Nauvis to Aquilo and back. Only solar panels, so I don't recommend sitting around Aquilo orbit for very long - it will wear down the rocket reserve.
Build Anything With One Assembler - POC
https://factoriobin.com/post/tvqipx (v3)
older-version
Updated; Simplified, and added descriptions above, and grouping.
- v2 ~~https://factoriobin.com/post/yazazc ~~
- v1
https://factoriobin.com/post/5zncmz
Take any item in the combinator in the bottom left; If we dont have a full stack of it, add it to a build queue
For each item on the build queue, pick one at random, try to build it, if we don't have enough ingredients, add them to the build queue
When building a item, build until we have TWO stacks, or run out of ingredients. This is one stack MORE then we use to determine if something goes into the build queue by inventory alone, this prevents thrashing, so we queue at 100, but will build until 200.
I use the H as a hold signal... this could be a lot cleaner and simpler, but it works, and I wanted to share! I'd love to see improvements.
A dependency we can't build will get stuck in the build queue (like plastic), right now I just have that displayed on the bottom using a manual check, but this isn't very elegant.
Inspired by https://reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/1gkhehl/behold_the_bogocrafter/ Thank you @Legitimate-Teddy@reddit.com
I don't have a reddit account to thank the original poster, but I do appreciate them sharing the idea! (If you use their original bogo design, be aware it doesn't recurse down the dependency tree very efficiently, so you will WANT to make your own build queue)
Issues I'd like to improve:
Too complicated, better alerting, less cycles rechecking recipes we already checked, if we change the original item combinator the build queue doesn't get reset, if I want MORE then one stack of something that isn't possible... that really needs to get fixed.

Trump HAD to run for president, it was his only escape from all the litigation
There is a reason the art of war tells you to leave your enemy an escape. So they fight less intensely.
I think there was a reasonable chance after Trump lost the last election, if he was allowed to go fallow in the field peacefully, he probably would have.
However, the absolute avalanche of litigation, and prosecutions against Trump basically compelled him to run for president as the only way to get a respite or peace. I honestly thought Biden was going to pardon Trump for all possible crimes, just to let things settle down. it was petty that he didn't, letting a lot of prosecutors build their names by taking a bite out of Trump. Who, quite frankly, doesn't have his shit together, can't keep his mouth shut, always involved in comically bad low level fraud, and is an easy target.
Therefore, Trump had to run, had to win. Put 100% of his future into it, because that was his only escape.
