  • The readme seems lacking... Does it have a measure for closeness and saves the closest one? That'd be cool. Isn't that what organisations do to generate onion addresses sort of?

  • Windows VS Linux
  • The arch wiki is a good substitute, but the gentoo wiki when it was still around and at its peak was amazing.

But I agree... Gentoo is not quite keeping up with a lot of details. Like experimenting with refind, dracut, efistubs, I felt I was in the dark a lot of the time. I ended up making very few mistakes, because the distro is very good at working for special cases even if all the details are not explained. Still my favourite distro.

  • If Open Source is so great...
  • I had that from the start... It cannot distinguish some keyboards, and I have two versions of my layout I have to switch between. All keybords work the same on linux, but mac, nah.

And updates? Holy shit! They broke ssh! It was broken like a month. Ssh connections just died as 'corrupted' all the time. And they don't hotfix it asap? How can a company trust to use them as a work laptop if they break it and don't fix it?

  • If Open Source is so great...
  • "Slightly worse". I got a job and was not allowed to use a linux laptop, so I went with mac. I was almost worried that I would like the "just works" aspects everyone have been so exited about. Wow. What a piece of shit it is. Settings items takes forever to load after boot, mouse feels like it is stuck in mud (even if I remove accelleration and increase speed), it cannot wake many monitors up from sleep, it completely disables the keyboard momentarily when activating the screen (and if it fails to wake it, it becomes a flashing, keyboard grabbing nightmare). The window management? I can set up a workspace on this and that keybind, "oh, you disconnected the monitor, well we permuted the keybinds for you" wtf? When I get home and switch to linux, it is such a relief.

  • Not the event horizon of a black hole, but the singularity at the center. The event horizon is only a singularity in certain coordinate systems, but you can select coordinates that are smooth there. The black hole singularity is more comparable to big bang, in the sense that it is an indication of missing physics.

  • Should I donate to Wikipedia?
  • If you do, their e-mails asking you to donate again are a bit weird and manipulative. Their subject lines are like "FIRSTNAME - I've had enough", "Our final email" (got several of those), "It's non-negotiable".

  • What should I bring to far-north Scandinavia?
  • Scrolling through I don't see this tip I was made aware of when going up north: shower in the evening. I'm not sure it makes any significant difference, but the logic seems sound; while sleeing you build up a protective layer of fat on the surface of your skin, face especially. It helps against the cold, so don't rinse it off in the morning.

  • Best HDD/SSD for local media hosting
  • I recently got some Toshibas and they were loud. They also presented with a seek error pre-fail after a few days (all three of them). That propably adds to the volume, but the seagate and wds I switched to just have some clicking noises. Not too bad.

  • Trump wants to end 'wokeness' in education. He has vowed to use federal money as leverage
  • Oh, they tried to do this in sweden. They have promissed an examination of "wokeness" in higher education. They celebrated a university forbidding "any conversation a passer by could interpret as political". They have not started it yet, and they just changed the guy that is supposed to be the anti-woke minister in this context after the summer. So we will share this journey.

  • critical latex mod
  • What are the options here? Can I have them be only visible when printing? Does it mirror itself if I print double-sided? Maybe pdf does not support these things, but to me these are the important questions.

  • Sweden jails activist who burned Quran for inciting hatred
  • Note that he is not sentenced for the burning itself exclusivley, but all the context of his actions. For example, in his "critique of islam" as he probably would put it, he generalize it to "arabs and africans" and he, according to the court, insulted a person present at his demo "based on skin color and ethnic background". As I understand it, this was a big part of his demos; go to a segregated area, yell insults at non-white people to try and make them angry. This is also what seems he is, at least partly, sentenced for.

  • Setting up your own e-mail/smtp for alerts?

    Hi,

I'm looking for some way to send my own alerts via e-mail in some way. Whenever I try to search for this, most docker images have a much grander goal, and I have a hard time understanding how to use them for my purpose.

What would I want? It'd be nice to have a docker running some smpt-server (I suppose), so that I can make my own python script that scrapes a website, looks at some metric, and e-mails me whenever whatever I'm looking for is found. I only want it to be available on and to receive mails from localhost, no dns, just forward e-mails to my personal one, no web-interface, etc.

I'm quite new to self-hosting, but I hope you still understand what I'm looking for. Is it possible? Should I look for another solution? Will this not work? Any help/input very much welcome.
