Debian lights up an icon in the System Tray. When I am ready I can either click on that icon to bring up the package manager GUI or I can open a Konsole window and run 'sudo nala update' then 'sudo nala upgrade'. (Nala is a beautiful front end for apt)
Samsung Baloney?
I just got a notice from Samsung that they have new a new Privacey policy. When I get to the policy page it is blank except for a "Accept new policy" and text saying I must accept the policy to see it. I clicked the button - then that screen closed. What?? no policy? BTW - this was not sent as a normal text and does not show up in messages.
This is true of any OS, The people who build the OS for you to use can build in all kinds of sneaky stuff - see "Trusting Trust" about an invisible trojan in the C compiler. An issue with Microsoft Vs. Most Any Linux is the whether the maintainer's goals and the User's goals are oriented in the same direction. Microsoft wants to get data about you for whatever purpose whereas Most Any Linux maintainer's main goal is to produce an OS that is as free of bugs and is as useful and as secure as possible.
Funny, that Linux manages to 1) Tell you when updates are available and leaves it up to you to apply them 2) Apply updates quickly, rarely over a minute. 3) Even more rarely requires a reboot. Because of these three features, I am usually more than happy to install an update any time one is available when I come to a convenient point to do so.
So far, and since I have been running Debian for a while now I don't know about Ubuntu specifically, All the distros I have used either show an update is available, or you check for updates.
You have the choice and control to install the update and can do it later if now is not a good time. Or don't install it at all, it's your system.
Unfortunately, all it takes is a change in the HOA board to turn a better HOA into a badder HOA.
You will not find a developer standing at your front door saying "Sorry, Updating the house- you can't go in right now" - and if you buy a home usually you can remodel but if you are in an HOA you probably have to beg permission to do anything that would be visible from the street.
Perhaps Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc are either pre-built homes delivered complete by truck or a stick-built home built to specifications provided by an architect.
In any case, remodeling is a possibility.
A thought just hit me -- "Windows = The HOA of operating systems"
An HOA (home owners associations) can say what color you can paint your house, What you can plant in your yard, What you can have in your driveway, and some even say what color your blinds can be.
Microsoft controls your computer, they say what info is sent back to Microsoft, and they say when you must upgrade. They can shut down your computer when they want whether you like it or not.
One only relies on ChatGPT for 1) imagining science fiction story lines and devices 2) Only where one knows the correct answer already. This instance is kind of a one-off. Spicy autocomplete - lol : ^ )
[Solved[ Is ChatGPT hallucinating about "umount /dev/sdx && sync"?
If one unmounts a disk, is that disk still available for write and can the following sync do anything?

@ComradeMiao : Ondsel? I did see a post that they were going to quit.
The best situation would be to swap right shift and up arrow. I tried that and still had mistakes, but now the opposite kind because I had become somewhat accustomed to the bad layout. If I go the disabled route then I would be disabling the up-arrow, and I don't have any place nearby to make a new up-arrow.
What I am doing for now is just using an external keyboard (Logitech wireless set with a mouse)
Is there a version of Sketch up for Linux?
Packing dishes you can also use your clean kitchen towels/dishcloths too. Number your boxes too: 1 of 20, 2 of 20. Borg like.
I have an AI-generated image that looks very much like Bliss, the prompt was ""Deep Blue sky. Small puffy, bright white clouds. Grassy green hill."
My Wallpaper is a set of "Neon" artwork I did on Night Cafe. They have black backgrounds which can be centered and merge with the black border around (so it always looks like the art was made for this particular screen setup, including the panel on the left. One of my favorites: https://creator.nightcafe.studio/creation/Z0dVGQxc4Uyy3jCm8Nyz?ru=waspentalive
Good choice for the Microsoft Surface - The BORG. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
Does that mean, to play minecraft on their server I would put "www.dududu.com" in my Minecraft client?
Canon EOS R50 custom menu - What's on yours?
Mine: ISO, Drive Mode, Battery Info, Digital Zoom. I have 2 more slots. Does your camera provide this feature? What is on your custom menu?
Old typing habits die hard. Why would I have to type differently on one machine vs. the way I have always done on 3 others. Muscle memory makes typing go fast. So I just attached a USB keyboard, but this won't help if I want to take the laptop away and work remotely.
Update:AS it turns out, I don't do that often.
Unfortunate Keyboard
The right shift key vs. the up arrow key on my Lenovo Ideapad have been placed unfortunately - I think they would be better swapped - When I go for shift I usually catch the up-arrow instead
Is there any help for this?
I made a background
"Haiku" done as a neon sign - black background, colorful neon.
In case I can't attach it here is the link to Night Cafe where the background was created and is now stored. https://creator.nightcafe.studio/creation/1oJ2nVvMPI1BTTn9I5GJ?ru=waspentalive
On Digital Picture Printing
Hi fellow photographers!
-
Do you render your digital pictures on paper (print)?
-
Do you use a printer in the home for it?
-
What printer do you use?
-
What printer would you recommend with cost vs quality in mind? (8.5 x 11 prints would be fine)
-
Do you send your pictures to a commercial printer?
-
Do you goto the nearest Staples or Walmart and use the printers there?
HTML to Print anyone?
{Solved Thanks}
Would there be any interest? header tags are used to make table of contents, anchor tags create Index entries, all the formatting tags (tables, un-numbered and numbered lists etc) do basic print formatting. All the bold/underline/italic also render to paper. Sort of like a poor man's TeX.
Has anyone done this?
Advice Request - Lens question
First, please let me apologize for my lack of proper vocabulary. 😃
I have a Canon EOS R50 with the stock 18 to 45 lens.
I need a stronger telephoto capability, to take bird pictures, the moon, get that lone oak tree out in a field etc. There are devices that one can place between the lens and the body to <<telephoto more>>, right? Would it be better to get one of these or to buy another whole lens? I am assuming the adapter would be less expensive. Money is a factor. (isn't it always?)
Is chatGPT currently down or is it just me?
The is it just me says it's up but what I get is the input box but no other design elements show up. I can type in the input box but I can't submit it. It has been like this since 9/20 in the morning. I have cleared my browser cache.
Can I have a font like the one used in The Prisoner for KDE?
- for Konsole
- for use in LibreOffice
The original font was called Albertus
debian / Kde External monitor blanks to black randomly
I recently added an external monitor to my Debian 12 laptop, setting it as the primary display while using the laptop's monitor as secondary. However, I'm experiencing an issue where the external monitor randomly goes black, while the laptop screen continues to display normally. Moving the mouse brings the external monitor back to life. Interestingly, this happens while YouTube is running, with the audio playing uninterrupted. So far, I haven't noticed this behavior with any other applications.
Update: I was running YouTube from within the Firefox browser, not a YouTube app (If one even exists)
Laptop Recommendation Please (Solved)
(Solved) I would like a small laptop to use to log medical data (Weight, Blood Pressure, etc) as I gather it. I need it to be small like 10'. it can be low power because I will probably use it only CLI, no GUI, but I need it to be inexpensive. ARM-based is ok, as long as I can SSH into my desktop machine.
Anyone remember Semware Qedit?
If so, do you remember how to start the editor on a specific line number?
Did I damage it?
I triggered an update via Discover, and I think I clicked the [x] (close) title bar button a little too quickly. Would that have stopped the update in mid update or does Discover do the update in a subprocess that continues even if Discover is closed?
What if? Weeping angels
What if, instead of sending you into the past, weeping angels sent you into your future? Say the 'harvest' a 20 year old and send them into the future where they are 80 years old - the angel gets the energy of the 60 years.
Local Driving App
Google Maps is changing and will keep drive log data on the phone. I like to go on photo-drives following roads to find "Kodak moments", I also would like a map of my random rambles. I would prefer that the data for that map be locally collected on my phone but the map itself uploadable to my laptop. Does anyone have an App for that?
GPS coordinates in my pictures?
Canon EOS R50: Does the camera have GPS and can it record the location pictures were taken? I have GPS in my phone can the camera use that? I see the camera has WiFi - so does the phone perhaps that can transfer the location at the time a picture is taken.
Task Manager question
At one time when I would launch a program from the Task Manager the icon would stay in place, now when I launch something like Firefox for example, the Icon moves down to the bottom of the list. When I exit it moves back up to where it was.
I can't seem to find a setting that relates to this.
I am using just "Task Manager", is the thing I want in "Icons Only Task Manager"?
A question about a mirror less camera regarding shutter.
I have a Canon EOS R50, a mirrorless camera, which also seems shutterless - If I take pictures of, for example, an airplane with a spinning propeller, will I still get that "strange rubber propeller" effect? 1) the camera may have a shutter and I just don't recognize it or 2) the sensor is read in such a way as to produce the effect.
