So update 98/99 has gone live which fixes the crashes (thanks for the reports).
I'm gearing up for a pretty sizable release but just wanted to check in and ask if there was any issues you're having that I should know about or any new feature requests.
Sorry for the bad comms but I'm making my way through lots of messages and posts on here. Thanks for the patience as I get through these all.
I'm partly colorblind and it's super hard for me to see when I upvoted or downvoted a post. Just making the up or down arrow bolder (or circled) once it's been clicked would fix the issue completely for me and all types of colorblind people.
Yellow is very visible, it was intentional but with no specific purpose :)
There are multiple types of color blindness but all of them will be aggravated if a font or shape is thin or just outlined (which is not the case with a filled in heart emoji)
I'm not sure where to find which one I'm using. I use dark mode and the colors I'm having trouble with if the font is too thin or small are the orange and light blue.
Changing the font weight or adding another style would also mean this is visible in night mode on Android (which removes all colors)
Edit : I investigated the viewtypes and they all have the same issue of using the same font size and weight, just using the orange/blue color for the number of upvotes and the selected arrow.
Edit 2 : increasing brightness helps a lot with the colors, but I'm mostly using Sync at night on minimum brightness.
The best way for you to visualize the issue would be to activate black and white night mode on Android :)
Yeah, my problem was in just overlooking the save button at the top right of that page. Maybe a reminder if you leave without saving would help or make it autosave when a setting is changed.
The biggest thing I'd wish for is full markdown support, stuff like spoiler tags, superscript and tables is still not working properly and it would be nice if it did.
I also don't know if this is a bug others experience or if I have messed something up on my device, but clicking community links sometimes opens up the link in browser instead of in Sync.
Finally, highlighting new comments on a thread re-visit would be a dream, but last I heard it wasn't supported by the backend. But maybe an option to highlight comments made during the last X minutes as a sort of hack?
I think there were issues if tables got too wide IIRC. Tables are a bit of a nightmare to deal with though. I would also personally prefer to not hide the borders for better readability, but I guess that's more of a preference and less of an issue.
For links, I have not been able to deduce a pattern. I usually test with the posts at !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl For a while I thought it was related to certain instances, but in today's post one of the links going to lemmy.ca opened in browser and another in Sync. Very puzzling.
I'm eagerly waiting for separate upvote and downvote counters 😼 but let me know if you were only asking for features not discussed previously to shut up next time
I have a feature request. Harmonic for hackernews has the option to open a url directly on archive.org, which I think is a pretty neat feature. Would it be possible to add this?
Just wanted to say thanks for the post, even if it was a quick one to say releases are coming. I had been considering signing up for your paid version but was hesitant to pull the trigger because I feared the project had been abandoned. Since it's not, I'm signing up now. Appreciate all the work you put into the app!
Is there a way to make "deleted by user" stand out more as a system message? The current styling makes it look like they literally commented "deleted by user"
The only bug I'm having with Sync for Lemmy is that it does lots of wakelocks in the background, I had to set the app to restricted mode in the battery settings as a workaround.
I don't know if this is because it tries to fetch notifications (a feature not available yet) or IDK.
Setting it up to "restricted" instead of "optimized" basically fixes idle issues, although I can see the app refresh a lot more than when it is optimized...
Sync for Reddit never had this issue, I always had it in optimized mode and it barely was active in the background.
Pictures for reference:
EDIT: I am experiencing this issue with AOSP, with MIUI I did not, but I'm guessing it is only because MIUI is more aggressive with apps in the background.
EDIT 2: Also I'm seeing a new gap just below the main post in the newest version 😅
I also noticed a gap, and I'm wondering if it's where the ad banner is now. I really hope not and that this is just a visual bug, because it's pretty glaring and distracting.
I did not mess around with wakelocks at the time of my comment, but I did now, if you are rooted check out the "App Manager" app, if you are not then I think you can accomplish the same through adb...
What I initially did was to just set the app to restricted mode within the battery settings in the stock config app.
I'd love it if clicking on the thumbnail of an image opened the raw image, instead of the compressed view, so instead I have to go into the post and click the image there for full resolution. It's especially noticeable for larger images with small text.
Well in this example, I'd say it's just differently formatted. The borders are not visible and Text isn't centered.
In the example before, I feel like it is that Sync hides the table when it is too wide/or the multiple tables are tried to be placed side by side instead of below each other?
I'd also prefer the left side, probably 👍 But tables are a nightmare these days with dynamic layouts.
I'm hoping the new update will include the new "scaled" sorting option. I think it will really help support smaller communities on Lemmy if more people use it.
In Sync for Reddit we had the ability to view previously upvoted posts. I don't know if Lemmy supports that, but that was a feature I used often to go back to something. Thanks
I second this. It is the option in the three dots when viewing a stream of posts, right? I recall it had the icon of a finger and and arrow and was called "Swipe mode".
Images like the one in this post don't automatically open at full resolution. There's a discussion in the comments about the steps to get it to open at full resolution.
Well this is weird. When I've gone on it again it loads at full resolution and I can zoom in fine. When I was opening it yesterday it seemed like it was just opening the thumbnail.
Sometimes large images seem to load a lower resolution image and you have to click out and click again for it to load. Usually I notice it when peeking.
Features wise, full mod tools would be awesome, but I figure you've got that on the list already. Same with the latest lemmy stuff like instance blocking at the account level.
Beyond that, the only thing I can think of is more granular control over theming. I finally found a set-up that's working for me, but I know it took some fiddling that could have taken less time if I had been able to tweak background colors, or whatever. I've seen other people talk about that for sync, as well as other apps that a don't even have the options sync does. From a usability perspective, contrast between sections of the ui can be the difference between literal headaches and a relaxing scroll.
I'll add another feature request that I forgot: instance browsing. Being able to see a list of communities within a remote instance would be nice (preferably sorted by subscribers like in the web UI). Being able to see the Local feed from a selected remote instance would also be useful. I think both those features could help with community discovery.
EDIT: disregard most of this, I was blind to the instances button. It would still be nice to see the communities-list on an instance sorted by size.
Is that different than using the "instance" button to go to (for example) lemmy.world and then the "communities" button to bring up this list:
(Edit: I see that my pic isn't all sorted by size, and that's a difference, but I'm genuinely curious about other ways to browse other instances since I'm basically alone on mine)
Is it different from the instance filter here: Settings shortcut: Filters > Instance filters ? (I see that I have accounts blocked and communities blocked, but I haven't tried blocking or filtering any instances)
Any chance of an option to flip the upvote/downvote colors to the Lemmy ordering (blue up/red down)? It's always a little jarring going between the app and website and seeing all my votes are backwards
I'd still like to see OpenBoard keyboard get to auto-complete/correct in the title field (and Swiftkey, I've heard). I don't know what's up with that, but it makes me sad.
The spoiler tags could use an overhaul so they are consistent with the rest of Lemmy. (Obviously handled in the markdown overhaul you mentioned)
Being able to edit image posts, or the titles of posts in the app would be appreciated.
The other thing that's on my list is the inbox thing. There's the discrepancy in badges for unread - bottom nav bar gets the badge, but the other views don't seem to; there's also the crashing when I change to other views in my inbox if I get there from the left drawer or the top "More Actions" area. (Pretty sure I made issue tracker reports on those.)
Welcome back, LJ! Thanks for all the work you put into Sync - it is such a good interface and user experience overall, and I love it.
(シ_ _)シ
Pretty much the only thing that's missing for me is a way to customize card and background colors - dark mode gray's too light, AMOLED is too dark for me ^^
The only problem as an overall happy Ultra user is when I try to go back from any other sub-page, the previous page sometimes starts from the very beginning as if it refreshed.
For example, when I just browse the feed, then find an interesting community, visit it, come back and I have to scroll the feed all over again. This doesn't happen every time but only sometimes. Doesn't feel like ram issue as I'm running S24U, should be capable for that.
Also, automatic skip of "Load next page" would be awesome as I've filtered quite a lot of stuff.
Typically not more than one, sometimes it could be two. But it definitely happens with just one level. Usually happens when I'm way too far down the feed, I guess?
Is it possible to get ads blocked in the articles that open through sync? I'm not talking about the ones that show up in the unpaid version in the comment section, but rather when you click through to an article, sometimes the sites are so ad-riddled it becomes difficult to read.
The 2 screenshots here are the same link opened through sync vs through firefox
There's a thing where if you go to the inbox from the left drawer, and change your ... page? View? From, for example, Unread Replies to Mentions, or whatever, and it crashes every time. Also the More Actions inbox is like that.
Edit: just tried again - left drawer inbox, go from All Replies to Unread Replies, crash.
Edit 2: found the GitHub issue about it: Issue 446 if anyone else wants to add info to it.
Then pay for it. This is one guy soloing an app in his free time. If you want more features it requires more of his time to work on them and time spent developing this app is time not working his full time job making steady income. We have no right to ask for more of his time for free.
I'm fine paying, but $20 to remove ads is a very big ask for a mobile app, when it was maybe $3 or $5 for the old reddit app. Especially so when it seems he comes and goes and updates to a very in development app have stopped for months at a time.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not making any demands, I agree with everything you say, but the ad removal option is quite a lot especially when there are many free lemmy apps too.
There is also the problem that I can't upload any photos which I took with my phone to lemmy because they're just too big. It would be nice if it would offer to resize it to smaller to be able to upload it, otherwise I have to somehow do that manually on the phone which is not very stright forward.
A new spammer today made me think of another feature request: automatically refresh the currently viewed comment section after blocking a user to instantly remove the blocked comments.
Hello from a long time Sync Pro user. Love your app and how much support and time you put into it.
I don't have any issues with Sync for Lemmy specifically.
Although, I'd love to see sync pro available outside of the Play Store, even if directly from your website.
I'd really like to completely decouple my phone from Google and there is a very small handful of apps that I still have to get from Google Play.
However for the paid apps, I can't reasonably use Aurora Store because I'd need to link my Google Account for a license.
I know those would be extra work for you, so if you do decide to work on it l, know that I totally wouldn't mind buying another lifetime license for a de-googled purchase validation.
Feature request: Saved post/comment categories similar to Reddit Gold. I'd love to long press the saved icon to supply a category. Then list all of the items of that category on the saved items page.
I understand that Lemmy currently does not support this.
I'm having an issue where the toggle for post-title -with-share when sharing an image does nothing - but I don't see anyone else with the issue, so maybe it's just me?
It's great! The only things I've noticed is that I don't think the spoiler tags work correctly, and I can't post gifs from the built in gif search (I get errors saying "could not upload image".
Did removing NSFW posts go away? When I look at my filter options I see that I can blur previews and such, but the option to have them completely blocked went away. Or maybe it moved?
Is there a way to configure the hide/show read posts more granularly? I'd like to have it off when viewing a specific community and on for the broader feeds
