Fashion is cyclical
  • And then the younger orcas won’t get why it’s ironic and will think it’s actually cool and wear them sincerely, and it will slowly become unfashionable again. Until another 30-40 years pass.

  • Elusive deer spotted wearing high-vis jacket in Canada: ‘Who is responsible?’
  • I’d bet this is someone’s “pet” deer that they don’t want shot and are trying to signal that. I’ve heard of people putting reflective collars and things like that on deer that they’ve kept as pets, to try to deter hunters from shooting them.

If that’s what it is then I totally get the impulse to help a wild animal yourself, but the average person VASTLY overestimates their knowledge of what wildlife needs to be healthy. Always contact a wildlife rehabber if you find wildlife in distress!

  • Bat Drip
  • A bat being active during the day and colliding with you is very abnormal behavior. If rabies exists where you are (this includes the UK for bats) see a doctor ASAP. Like, I wouldn’t go to bed without doing it. It’s possible for you to be bitten without feeling it because of how small they are, and disorientation is a sign of rabies in bats.

It’s totally fixable even if it did have rabies and bite you, you just have to go get a (normal, NOT in the stomach) post-exposure shot.

  • Is drawing furries profitable?
  • If you don’t already have an audience you should try to establish one before doing commissions. Furries generally don’t want a Walmart that just has whatever commission is cheapest, they want to commission an artist that has a style that speaks to them and they enjoy.

You don’t necessarily need to have your own fursona or do porn, but both help.

If you can crank out high quality drawings you can earn a fair amount. The fewer people are willing to draw it (weird porn) or the higher quality* the art is, the more you can charge.

Whether or not you can live on it is something you’d just have to sit down and do the math on. With rent/taxes/expenses/savings, how much do you need to charge per page or per hour of work? If you’re doing it as anything other than a side hustle DO NOT skip this step, or you will be working below minimum wage.

    * subjective, but you probably have an idea of what a potential client would mean by that

Edit: realizing I assumed this was asking for advice on how to be profitable with drawing furry stuff and not a general inquiry, lol. It can be profitable, but you have to be good at self marketing and not be shy about charging an appropriately high rate for your art.

    Dear Lord Mayor Dr Kerridge

I understand that the actions of Rising Tide supporters over the past week may be causing concerns to council members and would like to provide some insights prior to your council meeting.

I am a longtime local, having worked for 16 years in risk management in health. 3 years in project management at the university and 11 years as an organisational management consultant. I have written and reviewed more risk and safety plans than I care to remember. In all those years I have not witnessed such attention to safety and training as I did with this event.

For months leading up to the event. Rising Tide organisers ran training in locations around the country and online. These included safety (on the water and generally), legal rights and responsibilities and non-violent civil disobedience. I have attended these training sessions and have been impressed by the emphasis on staying safe, remaining respectful and making a considered decision regarding individual involvement. At no point was there any pressure to undertake action that we were not comfortable with: on the contrary we were encouraged to examine how we felt and to step back if the action didn't feel right.

Having run many community events, conferences and training workshops over the years I was also impressed by the attention to detail in respecting the space. Over 1,000 volunteers ensured that the site remained orderly, clean and navigable. They provided meals, counselling, first aid, security, legal support and more. This was a dry event so no alcohol or illicit drugs, so no resulting poor behaviour. Today the site is so clean, it looks like the event never happened.

Throughout the event, organisers openly expressed their thanks to the council and in particular the Lord Mayor. for supporting the event under difficult circumstances. The actions by the state government were shown to be unlawful, unnecessary and a complete overreach of their authority. As citizens, we have a right to protest.

If there is discussion about the behaviour of the protestors at tonight's council meeting, I suggest you hold judgement until the evidence from the blockade is presented in court in January. The information presented by police and some media agencies is not the whole story and at times factually incorrect.|

I would like to express my personal thanks to you, Lord Mayor, for taking a stand on such a controversial issue.

There is no greater concern to the world than the impending impacts of climate change. The move away from coal and gas is not a choice, it's a necessity. I grew up in a mining community and understand the concerns of mineworkers. which is why a considered and just transition is so important. It's to Newcastle's advantage that we address that sooner rather than later.

  • Bird flu detected in raw milk sold in California, health officials say
  • I will say in defense of chicken pox parties, those made sense before vaccines existed. If you didn’t get it in childhood it was a lot more dangerous to catch in adulthood. And you had a 95% chance of getting it at some point (lifetime infection rate pre-vaccine), so the thought was to get it over with when you were young.

Now, obviously, just get the damn vaccine.

  • If you are an American, how are you preparing for the upcoming tariffs and possible trade war?
  • My husband finally bit the bullet and upgraded his computer. I’m planning to upgrade my phone before the year is out, because mine is 6 years old and probably not getting security updates for another 4 years.

Not that these things didn’t need to happen, but having it forced on us last minute has sucked.

TIL about "SnotBots": drones that are flown through whale spouts to collect biological samples

www.cbsnews.com Gloucester researchers use "SnotBot" drone to study whales like never before

Ocean Alliance in Gloucester is using drones to get a close look at whales off the coast of Massachusetts.

Gloucester researchers use "SnotBot" drone to study whales like never before

    >Ocean Alliance began working with drones in 2013. Within the last few years, they began collecting exhaled breath condensation, also known as "whale snot."

    >The whale snot is a biological jackpot with DNA, microbiomes, and hormones. This data was nearly impossible to collect from a live whale.

    >"I've seen more unique behaviors from a drone in the last five years than I've seen in the previous 25," Kerr said.

They’re apparently also using the drones to tag them for GPS tracking, really cool use for them.

You can get involved by using the iNaturalist app and joining the challenge.

The primary objective of this is to both get people more engaged and aware of their local wildlife, and to eliminate white areas with no observations on the iNaturalist observation heat map. This will help researchers learn more about urban ecosystems.

At what point when learning a new language does someone become bilingual?

Obviously learning a couple of words in another language doesn't really make you bilingual, or being able to say a few phrases. But there's also clearly some point before full fluency where you can be considered bilingual, but how is it determined (formally or informally)? Is it purely vibes based, you'll know when you see it kind of thing?

I'm vaguely familiar with the CEFR levels measuring how much of a language you speak, but if there's a cutoff point for counting as bilingual in there somewhere I don't know where.
