Go GIMP 💪These are good times to be alive
I'm sure they do but it will be way less.
You could sync your podcasts to your phone using Syncthing.
I would feel much better about closer security ties with Europe than with the US.
Cool to see Loops in action.
If someone is spending their time chatting to AI about politics then I think they've got it coming to them.
100% agree. These things get talked up as benefits when they are mostly treated as revenue streams by the seller and distractions by the buyer. Kids and adults. We all need to be way more critical of the tech we use.
So what? There will be a "Yes I'm over 16" check box which will be as meaningful as the "Yes I'm over 18" one on porn sites?
Any hope of governments or social media sites enforcing this will come with big ethical and technical compromises and I dont think anyone is actually going to really bother.
We already have limits on what children do with other potentially harmful things like fire, sharp objects, heights and roads and they all come from parents. If this law has any real and positive impact it will be the message that it sends to parents.
While this might be an improvement over chucking cables onto a bonfire but i think it's unnecessarily high tech. If the cables already need to be cut laterally into specific sections to conform to the wavelength and it uses 200w, then a better design would be to pull the cable over a blade to part the sheath like a hot dog bun. You could do that with a fraction of the power, no emissions from the pyrolysis and simpler more available tools; just some dies/jigs, blades and a motor. It could even be hand cranked. This isn't something that would get research funding though. And I bet there is already a tinkerer doing it somewhere in a shack in Ghana or Pakistan.
Cool batch-editing plugin
I just came across a cool plugin for batch editing and exporting layers, for GIMP 3.0 RC1 onwards. It's called 'Batcher' and you can find it here.
I just tested it out and it's super flexible and works really well.
Must-have plugin and great to see people jumping on it making new plugins for GIMP 3.X
I can't compare because I've never used radiotray but goodvibes and shortwave are both quite minimalist.
That sounds cool :) Hopefully it only contains natural fibre. I was surprised to find out recently that toilet tissue has PFAS 'forever chemicals' in it, when I had assumed it was just paper. Even this company making natural toilet paper have had problems verifying their supply chain and manufactuting process... I'm totally on the sceptical side of anything which is currently mass produced being free of toxins but that is just me!
There's some really good research and info on this site: https://www.anourishingharvest.com/
When it comes to chemical pollutants and health I think it's the concentrations that are more relevant than the scale. Grams of toxins spread over a vegetable garden could easily be worse than tonnes of toxins spread over a big farm.
It's laborious to measure the amount of known toxins in your soil and even more laborious to measure the health impacts of them, so I just stick to using things that I know the soil can process naturally. Apart from not wanting to poison myself I also don't want to poison future generations or create a dystopian problem for them to have to fix.
To be honest though, in my experience mulching is a bit overrated and ends up being pretty much the same amount of work/hassle as doing a bit of a digging here and there. Also, digging, weeding and tidying help you to get to know the life of your garden and become more intimate with it, with I think is totally solarpunk :)
Rhyming Dictionary
Does anyone know of an open source rhyming dictionary for Linux, Android or both?
According to this article:
housing developments add to the problem with extra wastewater and sewage from new homes as well as run-off from construction sites.
Pretty much everything people do is polluting now and wipes out the fish.
Just had a look and apparently the problem is that housing developments add to the problem with extra wastewater and sewage from new homes as well as run-off from construction sites.
I know and I'm aware of the massive damage that it does to our waters, I'm just not sure why it's used as an excuse to not build houses in such areas. Does housing add to the problem of nitrates getting into the water or something? So many problems would go away if went organic and banned all fossil fuel derivatives.
What is the issue with building houses where there are high nitrogen levels?
If it's done and dusted because they already have your data then why are they constantly trying to get more?
If you're thinking of using paper or cardboard make sure that the inks and adhesives used in it are biodegradable and non-toxic.
I'm always surprised at how devious this windows spyware is. 99% of people would probably just accept to share all their data but that's not good enough; MS has to try and squeeze out every last drop.
When Do Debian Packages Receive Updates?
I'm aware of Debian's reputation for not having the most up-to-date software in its repository but have just noticed that Thunderbird is on its current version. Which makes me ask:
When does Debian update a package? And how does it decide when to?
I'm particularly interested in when it will make available the upcoming major release of GIMP to 3.0.
Changing DE/Changing Distro
If I want to install and use a different desktop environment than came with my distro, what (if any) problems can I expect to encounter?
I currently use Debian with GNOME and I want an optimised system for music production and graphic design. As far as I can tell, the two main options I have are to make some tweaks to my current system's configuration (rt kernel, swap use, cpu behaviour and others) or to switch to a dedicated media distro which is configured already. The creative distros that I like the look of don't use GNOME though.
Which option will be easiest for me?
Tinkering and Stability
What are some of the easiest ways for a beginner to make their system untable when they start tinkering with it?
Starlabs; good support long term?
Does anyone here use Starlabs computers? I'm thinking of buying one of their laptops and I'm interested in how well their products are supported in the long term. Specifically, firmware updates and spare parts & repairs.
Thanks
GIMP - Development Update: Closing In on the 3.0 Release Candidate
Update on 3.0 RC1 Development
GIMP 3.0 is over 96% complete! The GIMP team got sick at the Libre Arts conference over the summer, hence the setback to the release schedule but they are now back making good progress.
Along with non-destructive editing and a colour overhaul we've all been waiting for, longstanding critics of the UI/UX will be pleased to hear that GIMP are setting up a UX repository and are looking to build a dedicated team of designers to develop this.
All of these things look set to make the GIMP project feel a lot more current and dynamic. I can't wait!
And if anyone wants to help out it looks like testing/reporting, donations and updating the help manual are all welcomed by the project at the moment.

Buying electronics from EU; Duty & VAT?
I'm thinking of buying a new laptop from a business in Spain (Slimbook fwiw), but it's not clear to me from what I've read online whether or what kind of additional charges I'd have to pay. Has anyone else been through the process already?
CGT Increase
Exclusive: Rates of 33% to 39% being tested as Treasury source says tax-raising plans are in ‘complete disarray’
I'm expecting an increase in capital gains tax to get heavily attacked in the media and by the free market (pro-inequality imo) crowd, for predictable reasons. And they may even be right that in the long term the amount of direct revenue it raises is not significant.
BUT if a secondary consequence of this is an offloading of assets (particularly houses) I think it could be great. As the article reports; "Wealth managers have reported a flurry of investors rushing to sell second homes and other assets before the budget."
Am I right in reading this policy as a disincentive to hoarding and rent-seeking?
I don't think Labour will have the guts to come out and say this is something they're actually aiming for.
What do you think?
Evidence Latency
I'm a casual space enthusiast, so forgive me if this is ignorant, but is it typical that there is a delay (of several days or more) between hearing news about the success of a given space project and then the photos of it being published? I feel like I've noticed it a few times... And if so, why? Are photos hard/slow to transmit or make?
Select Audio Output Via Command Line
Does anyone know how I can select my audio output via the command line? I'm frequently switching between using my monitors inbuilt speakers and a USB audio interface and I'm finding it laborious to navigiggerate graphically through the settings in GNOME to do so.
What I'd like to do is set up a couple of bash aliases and do it in my terminal.
What's the best way for me to do that?
Many thanks
The West Reinvented
We have a past which is chequered, like veryone else's. Successes, failures, and things which have changed in our thinking and our values.
The systems we have produced are incomplete or not current - they don't match up to what we need or want. And there is stasis and inertia in them; they have not changed for a few generations. Change will come at some point though, whether we have a say in it or not.
What shall we do to define, advocate and enact our stake in that change? What are the frontiers that we need to acknowledge and approach?
What are the spirits/ideas of our culture that we can harness to make Earth a better place?
I spend too much time commenting on and witnessing failed ideas and the consolidation of power to no worthwhile end. It's now my belief that the only earnest thing to do is to move forward with an imagining and an eventual implementation of systems which emerge beside those which are already established. None of us want to go against the system in our own lives because it punishes us if we do. So, let's make another one beside it which is better. That the old one doesn't apply to.
What are your thoughts?
Let's first have a discussion about our principles and concepts.
Please speak openly, freely and optimistically - it might be the most important thing you ever say.

Any recommendations for VPS?
Does anyone have experience with a good privacy-focussed VPS provider? What do you recommend?
I've been using 1984 for quite a while and they have been solid but they have just put their prices up. It's still affordable but I thought it would be a good time to have another look at what else is out there.
Coreboot: Pros and Cons
I'm thinking of getting a new laptop which uses Coreboot. The reason is that I'm into FOSS and would also like to not have IME installed. Currently I'm looking at Starlabs' Starbook, which can optionally be bought with Coreboot.
Can anyone help me evaluate it? I would likely use Debian 12 as my OS.
Many thanks
De-duplicating/merging contacts in a .vcf file
Does anyone know how I can merge/deduplicate contacts in a .vcf vcard file?
A nice easy graphical option would be ace but I have some terminal experience if necessary. I've tried vcardtools.py but I couldn't work out how to use it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks!
Peertube Channel Recommendations
Anyone got some good recommendations for Peertube channels to watch or even whole instances?
I'm open to suggestions on any and all topics; broaden my mind! I probably have enough tech ones in my feed already though.
Thanks!
