If a person was ordering them, they would do it in numerical order. Despite these being numbers, the computer is still ordering in alphabetical order.
Doing it the way a person would requires the file manager to understand context, which requires a lot more logic for arguably little benefit.
I note that your season and episode start with 0 as well (S01E05), in order to ensure the alphabetical ordering works. Perhaps you should use 5.0 to solve this in the same way.
I believe it's correct. If you sort say "A", "AA", "AAA" then you get
- A
- AA
- AAA
Because the first character is compared, which are all the same, then the second. The first one has no second character, so it comes first. The second has no third character, so it comes before the third item.
In your scenario, you have:
- 5
- 5.5
The first characters are the same, so it looks at the second character. Item 1 has no second character so it comes first.
Scenario 2:
- 5.5 A
- 5 A
The first character is the same, so it looks at the second character. The second characters are "." and " ". The "." comes first in the character ranking so is shown first.
I can't remember which article I was reading, probably one on Lemmy, but it said that we know social media algorithms are bad for people and their mental and physical health, that they are divisive, drive extremism, and just in general are not safe for society.
Drugs are regulated to ensure they are safe, so why aren't social media algorithms regulated the same way? Politicians not understanding the technical details of algorithms is not an excuse - politicians also don't understand the technical details of drugs, so they have a process involving experts that ensures they are safe.
I think I'm on the side of that article. Social media algorithms are demonstrably unsafe in a range of ways, and it's not just for under 16s. So I think we should be regulating the algorithms, requiring companies wishing to use them to prove they are safe before they do so. You could pre-approve certain basic ones (rank by date, rank by upvotes minus downvotes with time decay like lemmy, etc). You could issue patents to them like we do with drugs. But all in all, I think I am on the side of fixing the problem rather than pretending to care in the name of saving the kids.

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!
This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.
It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:
- Something interesting that happened to you
- Something humourous that happened to you
- Something frustrating that happened to you
- A quick question
- A request for recommendations
- Pictures of your pet
- A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
- Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)
So how’s it going?
I think your advantage is needing two machines. Then you can swap stuff between them to test as well.
I gave away my previous build in whole and built a new one. No spare parts 🙁. And my SO and I are generally using laptops day to day, no need for more desktop machines and can't swap pieces between laptop and desktop.
I don't think having an old mobo/CPU would help anyway, I'm pretty sure one of the two is broken and swapping both out won't help work out which one.
Ah, interesting. But it's just a payload, right? So the missile parts would be something like testing electronics to ensure they handle the stress? Because they wouldn't be control systems or anything like that.
Do they do it on commercial launches because it's cheaper or so no one is worrying it might be a real missile?
Oh I didn't realise I could do that! You first link seems to say there is quite limited codec support though?
Is the suborbital one that one that was not livestreamed probably due to a confidential payload? Any speculation on what would be on a suborbital launch?
I bought a multimeter and tested the PSU, and it all seems fine. So pretty sure it's the motherboard or CPU.
I'm using it as an excuse to do an upgrade, so will probably get a new mobo/CPU/RAM.
I've unstickied it for you, which should unsticky it on other instances too. Not sure what the issue was, federation from SJW to Lemmy.nz seems fine, hovering around 1.5-2.5 minutes delay.
If it happens again, maybe try pinning it and then unpinning again?
Ah that does look like good bang for buck! Thanks!
Yip. Have tested the PSU with a multimeter and it's fine. Narrowed it down to the CPU or motherboard. I decided I'll just do a bit of an upgrade and get a new CPU, motherboard, RAM.
Oh wow that's awesome. Shame that someone told me about all the issues with recent intel CPUs. I'll probably go AMD again.
Probably not this one. I was a little disappointed with how little airflow this can gives me. In any case, I don't think I spun any CPU fans around much at all.
Aw man. So I want quick sync for better hardware transcoding but of course that doesn't matter if the chip is melting so probably go for a recent AMD CPU instead even though it doesn't have quick sync it should have hardware transcoding capabilities almost as good. OK, I'll start looking at AMD again.
Looking at the intel CPU I linked above, that whole series doesn't come with a cooler. I've never done a build that didn't come with a CPU/cooler bundle. How do I know which cooler will provide enough cooling for that chip? Not what is compatible, but what will actually be enough to stop it thermal throttling?
Yeah seems a bit overkill, I would think the integrated quick sync would be more along the lines of what I need.
Does intel/AMD matter? I have heard intel has special hardware for transcoding (Quick sync) - does this mean I should go for an intel CPU or is there an AMD equivalent? And am I prioritising number of cores over core speed?
How much RAM is enough (at what point do I prioritise spending on CPU over the RAM). I currently have 16GB but was thinking maybe 64GB? You say SSD writes aren't that relevant anymore but I have killed a few SSDs in my time so I think it's still relevant!
Edit: Maybe a CPU like this? https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/product/xNXV3C/intel-core-ultra-5-245k-42-ghz-14-core-processor-bx80768245k
That is a recent CPU that has 14 cores and the most recent version of quick sync. It's been a long time since I had intel, or even since I last did a build, so a bit out of the loop on what I should be looking for.
Don't mind the $NZD, looks worse than it is (though the exchange rate is a killer at the moment)
Is that onboard graphics or does intel do dedicated graphics cards?
I bought a bunch of books on Mighty Ape. Please tell me they aren't all going to come in separate packages...
I answered this question, Flick seems to buy back the power at wholesale rates. But wholesale can be very low at points, at the time I was looking the average in the last month was 4c/Kwh, where as some companies will buy back at a fixed rate of 17c/Kwh if you sign up for a 5 year plan.
Suggest me an upgrade for a server and streaming
You may have seen my post trying to troubleshoot my server. It seems either the motherboard or CPU is dead, so hey, why not do an upgrade?
I use this server for a lot. It's used for a Jellyfin server, sometimes multiple streams at once. I think I'd like hardware transcoding, I want it to be really good at streaming Jellyfin, and preferably multiple streams at once without issue.
It's also going to be used for hosting Zusam, a kind of private forum for friends/family - a key thing is that this will also be transcoding videos and photos to downscale them (uses FFmpeg).
I also host Photoprism, which will be generating thumbnails and indexing photos.
In addition to this, I also host a bunch of other stuff, I think the key ones are Nextcloud AIO and PaperlessNGX (which does OCR) as these would be more demanding. Also the *arr stack. Then another 10 or so services that aren't too demanding and have low usage so are unlikely to be an issue outside of making sure I have enough RAM.
I use it as a backup server as well. It receives borg backups from other devices and backs up itself to a backup HDD, and does cloud backups, but has a fast LAN connection and decent internet speed (300Mbps) and this is scheduled overnight so probably doesn't affect anything.
I also use it for playing games with the kids! Normally Stardew Valley but sometimes more demanding games.
Many of the hosted services have family members also using them. I want to make sure I can do things like the Photoprism indexing and Zusam video downscaling while not affecting the experience using Jellyfin or other services. It's all good if this happens by limiting cores for transcoding. It would be nice to be able to use it for more demanding gaming as well, but I understand if it's a bit hard to keep everything going nicely with a demanding game running that doesn't limit its multithreading.
Possibly related for compatibility purposes:
- all my hard drives are 3.5" HDD or 2.5" SSD SATA connections. I have 2 SSDs and 2 HDDs.
- I also have a Radeon rx5700xt graphics card. Would be nice to be able to keep using this.
- I'm currently running a full desktop environment (Linux Mint - Cinnamon) on it, for the purposes of playing the games. So needs to work well with Linux and also play nicely with wireless Xbone controllers.
- Case is Mid sized. Specifically this one.
And the current CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, in case you want to tell me what I have is fine and I don't need an upgrade 🥲
What are some good options for an upgrade?
My server won't turn on 🫤
I decided to clean out my CPU fan as it was clogged, when I assembled everything again it won't turn on 🙁
It's an old desktop PC. There are no lights glowing on the motherboard at all, though there is none specifically labelled "power". Just CPU, RAM, BOOT. None of these light up, not even a flash when it starts.
I have reseated the RAM, CPU, power cables. Removed the GPU to check.
The cord leading in to the PSU works but I don't have a way to test the PSU itself or the out cables, but I have reseated them at each end.
This PC was working fine before. But with no lights on the motherboard I suspect either the mobo or PSU?
Mobo is asrock x570 PSU is silverstone 650w strider gold S series
Any help appreciated!
Edit: I made a new post asking for hardware recommendations.

Aaron Smale covered abuse in care for eight years, but was initially declined accreditation by Parliament's speaker.
> An investigative journalist who was barred from attending the national apology to survivors of abuse in care has now been granted accreditation. > > Parliament's speaker has now granted temporary Press Gallery accreditation to journalist Aaron Smale for Tuesday's apology for abuse in care. He must, however, be accompanied by a Newsroom reporter at all times. >
> Last week, speaker Gerry Brownlee declined an application from Newsroom for Smale to report on the apology. > > Parliament's Press Gallery gallery had asked for an explanation, as a refusal was quite rare, especially when a reporter met the gallery's criteria for accreditation. > > It was told the application was declined, with the speaker citing Smale's conduct on a prior occasion. > > On Monday afternoon, the press gallery wrote to the speaker, requesting a more fulsome explanation. > > In an about-turn, the speaker approved the application.
> At a media conference at Parliament in July, Smale and the Prime Minister had an exchange over the government's law and order policies, and whether the Prime Minister would acknowledge the link between abuse and gang membership. > > According to Newsroom, Smale had also attended a media event at a youth justice facility in Palmerston North, and pressed children's minister Karen Chhour over whether it had been appropriate to associate the memory of the Māori Battalion with the new youth justice programme. > > "The Beehive was in touch with us to say they believed he had been too forceful and too rude, in their view, in those two occasions," Newsroom's co-editor Tim Murphy told Nine to Noon. > > Murphy said that Smale had conceded he had pushed the children's minister a bit far. > > "But the one in Parliament, he was asking specific questions and kept asking them of the Prime Minister and I think that became irritating to the Prime Minister," Murphy said. > > Describing Smale as "the most informed, possibly, probably of all New Zealand journalists" on the issue of abuse in state care institutions, Murphy said political discomfort should not be a reason to exclude Smale, and the ban should not stand.
> "As a society that values the role of the fourth estate, we should value the work of journalists like Aaron, because it helps us take a critical look at where we have gone wrong and how we may move forward," said the Greens' media and communications spokesperson Hūhana Lyndon. > > "Barring a leading journalist from an important event like this speaks to this Government's lack of accountability. It is something we might expect in Putin's Russia, not 21st century Aotearoa New Zealand."

Airport introduces time limit on hugs
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.zip/post/24799790
> Dunedin Airport CEO Daniel De Bono weighed in on the topic in an interview with New Zealand’s RNZ radio. Describing airports as “hotbeds of emotion,” he pointed to a study suggesting a 20-second hug is enough to get a burst of the “love hormone” oxytocin and argued that moving customers along quickly allows more people to get more hugs.

Submissions on tolling the replacement Manawatū Gorge road have now closed, but residents are refusing to give up.

Thoughts on HumHub?
Over time I've been on the lookout for social media for family to use. I haven't really found anything suitable, key thing is that posting photos and videos needs to be user friendly. For example, Friendica all but requiring you to upload your video to YouTube and post the embedded video is just not gonna fly.
I've seen Zusam in the past, which looks like it could become something but I don't think it's ready for me to try to get extended family into. (It's worth mentioning here that certain extended family have shown interest in using something like this)
Recently I've had a look around at some Enterprise social solutions, and have had a play with HumHub. It has a much more familiar look, things are separated into spaces that are similar to Facebook groups, and while media uploads aren't perfect I think they will work well enough.
HumHub has modules, many of which cost a decent amount of money, because they target the enterprise market. However, the community version is open source and the base features and free modules seem to work well.
Does anyone have experience using it? Any warnings I should know about? Any similar software that does a better job?

What are some nice short videos for youngish kids to watch?
I have kids ages 4-7 and they quite like watching a little snippet of something while they brush their teeth.
One thing they have been into recently is these stop motion videos on youtube on a channel called Peapea. However, it's obvious that M&Ms and Coke give them lots of money because it's all you see in many of the videos. But these are good videos, as the kids like them and while the full youtube videos are 30 mins long, within this there are lots of shorts only a few minutes long each. Perfect for bushing teeth. Also a bonus is those videos don't rely on sound, so they can watch and understand it without telling each other to brush queiter.
Does anyone have suggestions for anything similar that isn't plastered with Cocacola and is suitable for the 4-7 age range?
Parents of students absent for 15 days could also face prosecution, while changes to teacher-only days are coming, David Seymour has announced.
I didn't "watch live" but I guess that's a warning the article may change. Here are some snippets as it currently stands:
> Schools won't be able to hold teacher-only days during term time and parents of students absent for 15 days could be prosecuted, Associate Education Minister David Seymour has announced in a new truancy crackdown.
> Schools must have a stepped attendance response (STAR) plan in place by the beginning of the 2026 school year. > > Seymour set out an example: > > - Five days absent: School contacts parents/guardians to determine a reason and set expectations > - 10 days absent: School leaders meet with parents/guardians and student to develop a plan to address barriers to attendance and "the obligation goes onto services such as attendance, Oranga Tamariki and the local police" > - 15 days absent: Ministry takes over the response, including possible prosecution of parents > > Each school would also be asked to share attendance information with Oranga Tamariki, police, and MSD, he said.
