Just a techie guy running feddit.online to allow people to communicate, make friends and acquaintances. Odd coming from a happy introvert, right? (https://jerry.hear-me.blog/about)
I also own: Mastodon: https://hear-me.social Alternative Mastodon UI: https://phanpy.hear-me.social Peertube instance: https://my-sunshine.video Friendica: https://my-place.social Bluesky PDS: https://blue-ocean.social (jerry.blue-ocean.social) and more...
You're absolutely right.
A worse example, pharmacy.amazon.com only uses a 4-digit passcode to log in, and it's a pharmacy site!
It added two extensions to the sidebar. No idea why they were added. And I can't see a way to remove them or add more.
It's always sad loosing one of our own in the Fediverse. Thank you for the work that you did and all you contributed! Thank you for being a pioneer.
If anyone who is looking for a new home is interested in trying out a Lemmy alternative, take a look at PieFed (https://join.piefed.social/try/).
Best of luck to you in your next endeaver!
I just looked at these 3 on my PieFed server to see if maybe it's also seeing a similar issue, but all 3 mentioned Lemmy instances are federating fine and have all been seen within the past second here.
Check out https://lemmyverse.net
It's a good question and something they ought to support.
Their official account in the Fediverse is @protonprivacy@mastodon.social. You might want to try DMing them.
Firefox because only it supports (via an extension) having different sessions in different tabs, so I can log into 3 different accounts at the same website at the same time and use the same browser window for all of them. I need this and won't move to a different browser.
Yes, please report it. As mentioned by catloaf, speaking as an Admin, there's no way for an Admin to know about the abuse in any community/magazine unless someone reports it. Reports are very appreciated.
I believe in Lemmy, in replies (but not in the original message), including a Fediverse ID sends the reply to that address. So I hope they'll come take a look. Yes, it's officially their account.
I agree with your annoyance. Good luck!
You might want to include @protonprivacy@mastodon.social
You've ascended! You're now part of the real world!
I've noticed the same happening sometimes on https://feddit.online. I deleted one of the duplicates to fix it. I assumed it would fix it, but based on this report, the community might be left broken.
I have a hunch, but don't have evidence, that it's possible to add a community that was already added by the seeding routine and so end up with two of the same.
Oddly, they do have different stats.
I used a straight edge. They aren't lined up.
Thanks, Phil.
I agree about Drudge, and I ignored the report for years. But, like you, of late, it seems fine, so I've been following it. I too would abandon it if it goes back to misinformation.
I found numerous references to it documented on the Internet, before posting it
I'm actually reading and replying from my PieFed instance.
Thank you for setting up the group for me!
I just sent you a message from my Mastodon instance. Messages to/from Lemmy to/from Mastodon should work.
I just started following both this group and bits_and_pieces from Mastodon and from Friendica. Friendica does recognize both as type "Groups".
I haven't seen a post yet from bits_and_pieces come in to either one yet since I just started following. I'll post here how they look in both applications. In PieFed, what I see is identical to how it shows in Lemmy.
I have a Mastodon, Friendica, Peertube, and a PieFed instance. I'm an Admin.
Let me make sure I understand. You are asking whether I would care if you were using my server, and you asked a different server Admin to remove your data from their server (and probably ban you on that server)?
If this is what you are asking, I personally wouldn't give it any thought. It's your data. If you don't want it on some other server, then you certainly have that right. I frankly don't think any Admin would have a problem with this. Even the opposite would be fine. If someone asked me to remove their data that came in remotely.
I might even be impressed that you are enforcing and thinking about your rights to privacy and your right to control your own data.
We are now running Mastodon V 4.3.1
The server was just updated to Mastodon V 4.3.1 which is a bug fix release. Information about the update is here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.3.1
If you were on during the update, you should refresh your screen.
Please let me know if you notice any issues (@admin@hear-me.social)
Upgrading to V 4.3.1 this morning
Sometime this morning (21-Oct-2024) I will be upgrading the server to Mastodon V 4.3.1, a bug fix release. From experience, I don't expect downtime, but I will remind you to refresh your screen after.
More information about the release is here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.3.1
Thanks, Chris!
Our email server IP address is no longer blacklisted by Proofpoint
Proofpoint finally removed our email server IP address from their blacklist, so those with icloud.com email addresses, for one, should be able to receive emails from this server now.
Emails sent to icloud.com email addresses should arrive now

https://hear-me.social is now upgraded to Mastodon V4.3.0
It's now 12:30 PM EDT (16:15 UTC). I believe the upgrade to Mastodon 4.3.0 is just about completed. It's still building the indexes for the search, which I think may need another hour to complete. The pull queue is also still catching up on work that was waiting while things were down. It's behind by 11 minutes, but should go to zero soon.
We maintain our 12,000 character post limit and now also have a maximum of 10 items, instead of 4, that can be used in polls. I also increased the poll option character limit from 50 characters to 75.
A big shout-out to @stefano@bsd.cafe for publishing instructions on how to increase the post character limits and number of poll choices for 4.3.0. It saved me a ton of time. Admins, you can check it out here: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2024/10/09/2024-modifying-limits-in-mastodon-4-3/
A summary of the most important changes in 4.3.0 are here: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/mastodon-4.3/
A complete description of all the changes are here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.3.0
hear-me.social is coming down at 10:45 AM EDT (14:45 UTC) to upgrade to Mastodon 4.3.0
hear-me.social is coming down at 10:45 AM EDT (14:45 UTC) to begin the upgrade to Mastodon V4.3.0. It should be back up before 2 PM EDT (18:00 UTC).
I will be taking a cold snapshot, twice during the process, which takes time. The changes are extensive, so I need to work carefully, which takes time.
I did the upgrade yesterday in my dev version, and so I believe I know what needs to be done and how to prevent some problems that came up while updating the dev version.
Apologies for the inconvenience.
Server email will now come from the feddit-online-email.com domain
Since turning on this instance, email going out under the feddit.online domain has been a nightmare experience.
- iCloud won't accept the email what-so-ever. Just refuses to talk to the email server.
- Gmail gives it a 0 spam score (perfectly ok)
- ProtonMail says it's OK
- Runbox.com sends it to the spam folder
- Hover.com says it is mildly spam likely
- An email provider in NZ gave it a super high spam score
This means that every email provider pulls the rules out of their butts, clearly not using any data, or else there would be a much closer consensus.
A common claim from those that called it spam, or likely spam, is that the .online TLD is likely spam. This is crazy. Most of my spam comes from .com domains, which they say are fine.
iCloud was the dealbreaker.
Going forward, all email will come from feddit-online-email.com. I don't know how icloud will handle it, but since it is being accepted more by the other email providers I've tried, I'm hopeful. I'm still using my own email server, hoping this isn't a problem for iCloud.
If you have an icloud email address , can you try opening a private browser window and running this URL and telling me if you get the email? https://feddit.online/test_email?email= [enter your email address here>]
Thanks!
