  • It's in the Hamas charter. The organization is literally founded on the ideal that killing all Jews is commanded by Islam:

... the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah's promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said: The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.

  • The Anc in south Africa was responsible of killing civilians

And how did that conflict end?

Did the ANC push all the white people into the sea?

It ended with truth and reconciliation. It ended with the ANC committed to peaceful transition.

I see zero indication that Hamas will lead Gaza in that direction. They are the polar opposite, becoming more militant and extreme over time, not less.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • Agreed. Hamas and Israel are locked in a death struggle -- the existence of Hamas depends on a "river Jordan to the sea" hard line position on the extermination of Israel, and Hamas' existence fuels Israeli conservative support for apartheid.

Which is why I think anybody characterizing Hamas as "freedom fighters" is disingenuous. Fighters, certainly, but not for freedom.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • I never said that. I said that Hamas doesn't particularly care about freedom or independence in Gaza, and I stand by that.

Hamas will feed every Palestinian man, woman, and child into the Israeli war machine, if they believe that it will deprive Israel of a hectare of territory. Pushing Israel into the sea is their primary goal. That's their priority. And their aggression will insure that the war machine operates at full capacity, and that it continues to receive the active support of the international community.

Personally, I think the Palestine cause is just. Unfortunately, I think it's also futile. The hard line against Israel is gonna get a lot more people killed, with no positive result for Palestinians. At this point, the best hope for the future of the region is an independent state solution.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • Broadly I agree with you that, inasmuch as Hamas enjoys popular support, it is for exactly that reason.

But, that does not mean Hamas is fighting for the freedom and independence of Gaza. They are fighting to push Israel into the sea, and any means to that end is acceptable to them, including putting Gazans in terrible risk.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • Gazan independence does not demand violence; it only demands a government that is willing to put down the sword and negotiate, so that Netanyahu and Likud are not emboldened to continually tighten the noose. At least, that's what Netanyahu believes -- that a violent oppressor in Gaza is crucial to the success of Likud.

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/20/benjamin-netanyahu-hamas-israel-prime-minister

Prime minister for most of the last 15 years, Netanyahu has been an enabler of Hamas, building up the organisation, letting it rule Gaza unhindered – save for brief, periodic military operations against it – and allowing funds from its Gulf patrons to keep it flush. Netanyahu liked the idea of the Palestinians as a house divided – Fatah in the West Bank, Hamas in Gaza – because it allowed him to insist that there was no Palestinian partner he could do business with. That meant no peace process, no prospect of a Palestinian state, and no demand for Israeli territorial concessions.

None of this was a secret. In March 2019, Netanyahu told his Likud colleagues: “Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas … This is part of our strategy – to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank.”

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • Respectfully, I disagree. Hamas hasn’t allowed elections in the region since 2007. They are authoritarian, autocratic, Islamist statists with the sole goal of the elimination of Israel. They are not focused on improving the economy of Gaza, or granting freedom to the Gazan people.

That’s exactly why it’s been explicitly stated Likud policy to support them — conservative leadership in Israel wants to see the people of Gaza violently oppressed and stirred against Israel. An enemy on the border serves the conservative agenda.

A peaceful government dedicated to increasing Gazan freedom & independence would not serve Israeli interests, which is why Netanyahu has worked so hard to keep Hamas in charge in Gaza.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • I mean... they're both wrong.

Schocken said “the Netanyahu government doesn’t care about imposing a cruel apartheid regime on the Palestinian population. It dismisses the costs of both sides for defending the settlements

    No lies detected.

while fighting the Palestinian freedom fighters, that Israel calls terrorists.”

If Schocken is referring to Hamas, then he's out of his mind. Freedom is the last thing Hamas wants for Gaza or Palestine.

  • In the US, is this actually the moment past the point of no return?
  • I think the real answer is that we end up kind of like the UK -- going from the worlds ultra-dominant superpower to a sort of slow regression to the mean, as China, India and others take the spotlight.

When you look at what China is doing with their Belt and Road Initiative, and their move to dominate the transportation infrastructure of developing nations -- the US isn't anywhere near equipped to counter that. We're still in a cold war mentality thinking that we will dominate as the world's police force.

Meanwhile, all the actual economies will be run by Chinese companies operating with state support.

  • Just look at the numbers. Harris will probably finish 15 million votes behind Biden 2020. Those are people who could have voted, but didn't.

  • The Democratic party refused to understand that courting the right doesn't work, and now it's cost them the election
  • Nobody is under the illusion that Trump is better for the situation in Gaza than Harris.

But, too many left-leaning voters feel they have to "take a stand" by staying home or voting third party. I have several friends who did exactly that, even though it's abundantly clear that staying home is effectively a vote for Trump.

Meanwhile, NOBODY on the conservative side is doing that shit. It's been true since the Reagan era, the conservatives put aside any personal distaste they have, and they get behind their candidate.

  • The Democratic party refused to understand that courting the right doesn't work, and now it's cost them the election
  • I mean, there's a whole lot that went wrong, but the big one was subverting the democratic process with primaries that didn't really pick a popular candidate (2016 and 2024).

The primaries are the time for the candidate to energize a base of support. Harris has never energized anybody, and it was silly to think that affection for Biden would carry her.

Conservatives vote in force to signal their loyalty to their chosen community.

Progressives stay home when they perceive that their community doesn't chose them. Harris' vote totals at the end of this will sit somewhere below Biden 2020, for that reason.

You know, they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building, saying ‘Oh gee, let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.’ But she's a stupid person, and I used to have, I have meetings, with a lot of people, and she always wanted to go to war with people.

The HU Band - Wolf Totem (Mongolian Hunnu Rock)

The Hu (stylized as The HU) is a Mongolian folk metal band formed in 2016. Incorporating traditional Mongolian instrumentation, including the morin khuur, the tovshuur, and throat singing, the band calls their style of music "hunnu rock", a term inspired by the Xiongnu, an ancient tribal confederation of uncertain origins, known as Hünnü in Mongolia. Some of the band's lyrics include old Mongolian war cries and poetry in the Mongolian language.

MJX Hyper Go Monster Truck (or truggy?) 14210 -- Driving impressions

Now that I've had a few outings on 2S and 3S packs, here is my overall assessment:

    • The brushless system (supposedly 4400kV) is crazy fast.

    • As shipped, the truck is really slammed, and does NOT want to wheelie or come off the ground. On 2S, I couldn't get it to lift at all in straight-line acceleration. On 3S, I had to lift the truck with the shock collar adjusters to get it to flip on takeoff.

    • I'm not sure why, maybe it's the higher top speed & slightly longer wheelbase, but it is a bit harder to maneuver than the smaller trucks. I was getting the hang of it after a couple of packs, but you definitely need to finesse the throttle to keep it from rolling in turns. Go in too hot and it will surely roll. It could also be the tires, which were very sticky out of the box and may get a little less aggressive as they wear down.

    • Jumping was fine from a speed/height standpoint. I was struggling with air control but I'm not very good at that anyway. My landings tumbled but it ended up on 4 wheels.

    • Quite a few tumbles but no damage.

MJX Hyper Go Monster Truck (or truggy?) 14210 - unboxing impressions

So I've been buying these Hyper Gos based largely on the recommendations of Tomley RC almost since they first came out. I've got two of the 1:16 models, the 16207 buggy and 16209 monster truck, and one of the 1:14 scale street bashers, the 14302 Lancia-lookalike rally car.

The 1:16 scale off roaders are damn near indestructible. I've been running both of them on 3S for more than a year, and not one single thing has broken except for some body cracks (easily addressed by trimming the body back and reinforcing with tape).

The one complaint that most owners have with these small trucks is the small battery tray. You either buy extended parts to raise the retaining arm for the battery tray, or you remove the retaining arm entirely and hack together your own solution with velcro straps. Or, just bite the bullet and use the largest 3S pack that will fit the out-of-box tray. The best I could find is a 3S 1300mah Gens Ace that fits like it was made for it. That's still plenty for 11 or 12 minutes of full on hooning, or half an hour of on-and-off trail trucking.

The 14210 monster truck follows on the design of the 1:14 scale street bashers with a similar flat metal chassis plate design with a wheelbase a couple cm longer than the 1:16 scale trucks. It has a LOT more space for the battery, and it can fit 3S 2000mah packs or 2S 3000mah packs out-of-the-box. The servo is no longer parked under the ESC, and can be separately upgraded without taking the whole thing apart. RX has been moved into a dedicated waterproof box. Tires are slightly larger than the 1:16 scale trucks. All welcome updates!

MJX has corrected a lot of the problems that early Youtubers identified:

    • Rear CVDs have been upgraded to sliding driveshafts anchored at both ends, no risk of a dogbone end popping out.

    • Several screws on the model have been replaced with flange head screws, where Youtubers had noted there was risk of the parts pulling off over the screw heads.

    • The "super speed mode" on the ESC has been eliminated. Looks like it's running full power right out of the box.

    • The 2S Li-Ion cylindrical batteries used in the initial release have been upgraded to regular flat-pack LiPos.

    Other first impressions:

    • The shocks (metal bodies, metal caps, threaded) are large and buttery smooth for a model of this size. Out of the box, the model squats pretty low, like a Talion or similar truggy. But the kit comes with free stiffer shock springs if you want to push it up into a more traditional monster track stance.

    • The 14302 rally car had a problem where gravel could slip into the joints of the suspension arms, effectively jamming the suspension. Those gaps have been filled with solid plastic on the 14210.

    • The two included bodies (black and gold) are pre-installed with hard plastic sliders for durability.

    • The servo saver is really, really soft. It's built into the servo horn, so I'm not sure if it's adjustable. We'll see how it performs.

    • The 30 page manual is surprisingly comprehensive for an RTR Chinese import, with detailed exploded diagrams & part numbers for all subsystems on the truck.

I picked mine up on Amazon for $170, but if you're willing to wait a couple of weeks, you can find them on AliExpress from reputable sellers for about $155.

Possible username abuse? (Resolved by lemm.ee admins Aug 29 2023)

Hey folks. A question for you.

    I'm RickRussell_CA on lemmy.world, kbin.social, lemmy.ml, and beehaw.org.

When I saw that lemm.ee was coming up in the rankings, I decided that perhaps I should stake my claim here. But, as you may guess, there is already a RickRussell_CA on lemm.ee.

It's even using the profile picture that I had originally used on lemmy.world. It's made 1 comment (on a since deleted post) and no submissions.

I've used the "Forgot password" link and it's definitely not my account, as it doesn't recognize my email.

I understand that this is a risk under the Fediverse model, but I'm a bit worried that somebody staked this out as a way of impersonating me.

Is there any way to address this?

EDIT: lemm.ee admins saw this post, and banned the account. Thanks to them!

Decent work stand for the TRX-4

Bought a Duratrax work stand but honestly not happy with it. It's not tall enough (the wheels touch the workbench even when the car is on the stand) and the "trough" in the middle isn't deep enough to accommodate the TRX-4 transmission, drive shafts, and links, so the model kind of wobbles around balanced on its transmission.

Are there any commercial stands out there that can hold a heavy TRX-4 off the bench, and easily rotate it?

I'm almost at the point of buying some lumber and making something.
