Quick, shit on the floor!
As person born after 2000, I used to play a lot of games on them Wii and GameCube mainly. The image and responsiveness really felt different. I do kinda miss them
Legality/law of copyrights for sound effects
Hello gamedevs!
I've been making games as a hobby for some time. For assets, I would usually just rip whatever I found would fit best from the internet and edit it afterwards.
Now this is great (I think)for personal projects and the likes. But when you want to make them public that's not possible so whenever I'm building something for a public (free or paid) I make everything by myself or I use CC0 assets (or CC-BY with attributions in credits).
One thing I wondered is how much can I straight up use a sound effect without problems?
I have multiple scenarios:
Scenario a
I rip 1 to 2 seconds from a music. Apply some effects (reverb and filters for exemple) and add another sound on top of it. Would it be problematic to sell a game with this?
Scenario b
I record/rip a sound from a game, maybe I apply an effect on top of it then dump it into my game. Would it be problematic to sell a game with this?
Scenario c
I record a part of a music (like scen. A) and I merge it with 5 other sounds. I then apply a lot of filters and then, when in game, the sound is played through audio alteration functions using player inputs and game state as parameters. The original sound would not be recognizable. Would it be problematic to sell a game with this?
The grand question here is how much of an art piece has to be destroyed when building on top of it for it to be deemed original or something. But that's not the question of this post.
Thank you for reading this ^^
Hope some of you can answer this or give some guidance.
PS: I really don't mind giving attributions, in fact I really like being able to redirect to skilled artist through my work. I don't want to avoid doing it, I want to know the legal troubles of using samples from found audio.

Do you think there will ever be another RTS as big as StarCraft 2?
I'm saying big as in popularity, quality and depth of content. In one way or another, I consider clash royale to be some flavor of the RTS genre. But maybe there'll be something with a little more "prestige" than a mobile p2w game.
No, the cutscene looks great but I want to make games, not movies with it.

RAM: higher capacity vs higher speed
I am going to upgrade my 8gb desktop pc. I have 2 free slots and 2 slots with 2x4gb 2400Mhz. I will buy 2x8gb with 3600 MHz. Should I put them together and have 24gb at 2400Mhz or should I remove the 2x4 in favor of the 3600Mhz.
I'm asking because I read that when you have 2 different ram speeds it will default to the lower one.
Edit: it's for gaming and I have a Ryzen 3 1200 with a b350m as a motherboard
How games could do collabs better
COD:BO6 was just announced and all the comments talk about how the collab skins will drop after 4 months in the game and I was thinking to myself: "You know what, I wouldn't mind a [TSwift/Spiderman/any celeb collab] if it was well implemented" For exemple, if you want to have a Spidey skin, go for the black one, or make it with a camo, don't go full blue&red with glossy finish. If you want a Swifty skin, make it "war-ready". Use dark shades, add combat equipment, camo. I know it would be hard to represent some flashy characters like that but it's up to them to ruin the game IG.
Fortnite was in a good position as it already had a specific art style that allowed such skins to appear (even tho it loosed its original idea in the process) and also they at least try (I said try) to introduce collab in a lorefitting way.

Struggling with the snowy depth
Hey,
Like the title says, I don't really know how to approach this biome. I know how to build wands (at least, I know most of the stuff from the wiki) I had some "god runs". I always some kind of objectives for the first parts of the game:
- getting water
- getting a decent amount of gold before next biome
- going to mushroom biome if I lack power before next portal
- move down when low hp
But when I reach the snow depths, I always find myself lost. Should I go up using the mineshaft? Should I run to the next biome? Should I farm gold on the enemies?
The next ones I generally know how to deal with them but snow depth feels like a coin toss for me.
Best current/last gen gpu for Linux compatibility?
I know Nvidia has a reputation for being bad with Linux. Is it better now? And most of all, what would be the best GPU for modern gaming on Linux (any distro)?
What if there's a bigger, still unknown reference point?
When we think about teleportation, there's always someone talking about how you should take into account the earth and the sun moving through space. Let's step back a little (not so much) what if the galaxy we're currently in is rotating really really fast around another, bigger, still unknown, spacial object?
Something about The Finals
I recently had the opportunity to play the video game The Finals on a very good computer with a 2070 or something along the line (and it was a bit laggy on medium 1080p)
I've always wanted to play this game when I saw the promotion material. On top of being interesting and good looking, it's actually really really fun.
However, after finishing my second quickplay, I got hit really hard by the fact that I would never be able to play such a game on decent quality 60fps. I guess it's not really about The Finals... But since good gpus aren't on the way to become affordable and I hear about some shortages of materials, I guess I have to say byebye to this.
PS: I could put Helldivers 2 here maybe also but I'm not sure
