how do you guys use privacy focused messaging alternatives like Signal or Matrix?

I can’t use them because I can’t convince anybody to switch with me. I talk to most people on discord and I’d rather move to using Matrix, but I can’t convince any of my friends or family or anyone I know to use anything else.

Is it worth rounding up at checkout?

If I’m in the checkout at a business, say McDonald’s or Walmart or Kroger or whatever, and they ask if I’d like to round up to donate to some charity, I usually say yes. But should I be doing this? I heard somewhere that I shouldn’t because they can claim that as a donation from them which contributes to them paying less taxes or something, I’m not sure if that’s 100% how it works but I figure that it benefits them somehow or why else would they do that?

Am I being held back by using casaos?
  • What exactly is the 321 rule?

  • Am I being held back by using casaos?

I dunno why but I’m worried that casaos is holding me back from doing greater things I guess? I’m pretty new to self hosting and I discovered casaos from a Minecraft server setup tutorial of all things and it’s been great for me so far and does pretty much everything I need it to do, but I feel like I don’t really have a full understanding of what I can do outside of it, and I don’t really hear many people talk about casaos so I’m like worried it’s just not very good I guess? I’m just looking for ways to improve really.

For reference I just use my server for Minecraft on the occasion, a self hosted obsidian live sync, adguard, and in the future plan on hosting nextcloud. Casaos seems great for that and maybe it’s perfectly fine but I’d just be interested in being more knowledgeable I guess, and aware of any ways to improve.

[FRESH] GNX by Kendrick Lamar has released
  • it's pretty good but after my first listen I don't feel like I was really blown away or anything tbh. Feeling like a 7/10 maybe, but I'll have to listen a few more times.

Nextcloud client just deleted all of my files, why did it do this?
  • My answer was from @EmoPolarbear@lemmy.ca, who said pointig two different services that can provide digital files to the same folder is never a good idea. Even though I turned off OneDrive which I thought would avoid anything going wrong, it was still pretty bad, so just don’t do it in the first place. Probably read their whole comment though to make sure you understand fully

  • What if you could use your phone to type in text fields when playing docked?
  • This is pretty much exactly what I was looking for I had no idea kde connect existed, you are a blessing

  • What if you could use your phone to type in text fields when playing docked?

I dunno about other people but I play docked a lot, and typing with a controller is near unbearable sometimes. I specifically had this thought because I was playing webfishing from my couch and thought it would be nice if I could pull out my phone and open the steam app, or maybe they could make some kind of steam deck companion app for this and other features maybe, to quickly type a message or just make typing easier. I dunno if this would be difficult to implement or even possible but I think it would be neat.

Nextcloud client just deleted all of my files, why did it do this?
  • Yep I sure did the thing you said not to do. I’m very new to a lot of this stuff still learning, I didn’t think about it and thought it would just work in was able to recover all my files and everything is fine so I’m not worried about it anymore and I understand the issue now. So this has just been a learning experience, I’m moving on with the second message you suggested and just making a new folder and copying stuff over. Thanks for the input man

  • Nextcloud client just deleted all of my files, why did it do this?

For a long time I've used OneDrive to sync all of my files and keep them safe, but I've been really getting into self hosting all my own services, so today I set up NextCloud to replace it. I told it to sync my OneDrive folder, and it did it's best. It copied the file structure and had all the directories and everything but emptied every folder, it deleted every single file I had on my OneDrive, now all I have is empty folders.

Luckily OneDrive has a file recovery system where I can give it a time and date to revert back to so my data should all be safe, but why on earth did it do that in the first place? This was incredibly stressful and terrifying I thought I lost all my work. What did I do wrong?

Edit: I’ve identified the issue and have learned from this experience, it is now a non issue and was completely my own doing. Wary reader, learn from my cautionary tale

Have any of you tried switching to logseq? why / why not?
  • That sounds like it might be pretty great for me actually I will check it out for sure. Do you know if it’s possible to just import an obsidian vault into logseq? If I could just make it an easy migration it might be great

What search engine should I use?

I used google for most of my life, for the past couple months I’ve been using brave search, but I still end up using google often because google images is far better than brave search images. I’m also worried that maybe brave search isn’t the best choice. What would you guys recommend?

Excluding all games you have seen mentioned by anyone on the internet, what is your favorite game?
  • Some of my favorites that I don’t usually see mentioned would be Inmost, that game is fantastic, and Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight. Honestly the whole Momodora franchise is great, worth checking out.

  • What are the best e-mail providers out there?
  • It is, they can’t access anything it’s all encrypted and truly private to you. My only problem with the free tier is that there’s a signature at the bottom saying it was sent with proton mail, which isn’t even a big deal you just have to remember to remove it every time you send something. That and the 1 gig storage limit fills up quicker than you’d think.

  • Hi guys! I just made my first video essay about my favorite horror movie "The Thing", and how it compares to the 2011 prequel. I'd love it if you gave it a watch :) hope you like it.
  • I know right! When I figured out it was because of the higher ups saying it looked “too 80s” I like freaked out that’s a crazy insane reason

Is this what every election is like?

I’m only 20 years old, I’ve never voted or even really bothered paying attention to any other election, and I dunno it kinda feels like I started on one that was really crazy? But I’m not sure maybe every election has been insane and I just didn’t know because I wasn’t paying attention.

What can I do to help?
  • This is so true good comment

  • What can I do to help?
  • Those of us against it just have to do our best to fight back. It’s all we can do.

  • What can I do to help?

Trump was elected. This isn't what I wanted, but I'm trying to stay positive and not worry so much. The people have the power to make choices and work and campaign and support what they believe in and I for one want to take advantage of that. I want to help those that will be affected in the coming years and stand for what I believe is right. What resources, campaigns, protests, anything should I and others be aware of? What can we do to make the change we want to see?

    The Groove Grounds - Home

Hi there! Full disclosure this is my community that I run. There's not really any active people but I'm trying to grow into a space that anyone can talk about any music they'd like! It also acts as a personal music blog for myself, I talk a lot about hip hop and rap but don't let that scare you away from talking about any other genre. If you have any questions feel free to ask me!

Here’s my 100 most listened to albums on last.fm for reference of what my taste is like, don’t let that stop you from recommending me things you think I won’t like though I’m trying to expand my horizons.

I also like listening to small artists, I write a series of artist features all about people less than a million Spotify listeners so if you have any recommendations for that lmk.

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I love trying new things to keep the joy of it alive. So Lemmy, what are your favorite Halloween traditions?

I’ll go first. I love watching Over The Garden Wall every October, either on Halloween or a bit earlier. What about you?

Most of the trick-or-treaters have been skipping my house, and I finally figured out why
  • Me and some friends of mine went out “reverse trick or treating” tonight, we carried around a door knocking at houses and giving them candy, and doing the same for any trick or treaters, that kind of thing. We were really disappointed by how few people we saw, and a majority of the houses in the area just had bowls. It made us feel quite sad actually.

I think we were just in an older neighborhood, full of mostly empty nesters with a few younger couples. I hope anyways. There’s a part of me that’s worried that Halloween is like a dying holiday I guess, but maybe that’s just because I’ve gotten older and have a different perspective. Who knows.

  • Made my matrix.org account by signing in with google (big mistake)

What's up, I'm new to matrix and have just been getting into it, I'm trying to replace discord with it. When prompted to make an account I stupidly chose the "continue with google" option. This didn't seem like such a big deal at first, but now as far as I can tell it's impossible for me to sign in on my phone. The element client on IOS doesn't have an option to continue with google, and since I chose that I don't have a password, and I can't make a password without providing my existing password (which I don't have). Does anyone have any ideas? should I just make a new account and start fresh?

Considering switching to Linux, looking for some input

Hey there Linux community. I’ve been interested in Linux lately and have been considering switching to Linux Mint from windows 11. My main pc is a Surface Laptop Studio with an intel i7, 32g ram, 1 terabyte ssd, and an rtx 3050 ti gpu. I’m thinking about trying out dual booting to see how I like it, but I have some questions.

I use my laptop for a lot of creative work, video editing, web design, music production, photography, etc. I’m not too worried about it because I’ve come across many promising FOSS alternatives, but there’s some software I’d like to ask about specifically. I ditched Adobe Premiere in favor of Davinci Resolve a while ago and I know that there’s a native Linux version of Resolve, and I’m just curious about how well that runs for the people that use it?

As far as music production goes I’m an avid user of Ableton Live. It’s been my go to for years and I know that support for it on Linux isn’t the best, if it’s even there at all. I’ve seen a few people claim they’ve gotten it working but it seems a little suspicious to me. So to anyone in the music space, what are the best Linux supported alternatives? Or, in the event I decide to switch, should I maintain my dual boot setup to just stick with Ableton?

I’m also pretty locked into the Microsoft ecosystem with OneDrive (I get a terabyte of cloud storage for free so it’s where almost all of my files are). I’m in the process of trying to setup my own cloud storage with nextcloud or something similar, but until then I’m curious if I’d be able to set up OneDrive live file syncing in my Linux environment, similar to how it works on windows? If anyone has any experience with that I’d love to hear some input.

Not something that’s absolutely necessary, but I’m just curious if the touch support of my laptop would be maintained. Since it’s a surface device it’s actually a really nice touch screen, and the pen input is great, my wife borrows it for digital drawing sometimes and loves it. I don’t use it all the time but I do occasionally and it’d be a huge plus if it still worked just as well.

I think those are pretty much the only things holding me back from fully dedicating myself to switching, so I’d really appreciate some input. Thanks!
