We should be enjoying our finite time on earth with friends and family not scheming ways to monetize our very limited free time
  • Yes.

The system itself is trying to profit off of the failure of the system.

This is one reason why it is a flawed system. It can change tomorrow if we coordinate, but there will always be some dipshit that will buy anyway. Some dipshit that sees that they will be a standout if they are against the cause. The human love for things is too great.

  • Auto industry’s shift toward EVs is expected to go on despite Trump threat to kill tax credits
  • When it changes from pretty close to yes, then it won't be a false equivalency and I'd probably be in the market.

Edit: anyone disagreeing, can you explain how a technology that asks some population to change their behavior is expected to succeed? The EV asks its buyers to change their habits. It asks you to take the hit for the climate -- while simultaneously using technologies like modern batteries which are straight up bad for the climate.

Asking these things to be at parity with gas (as in, can I fill my electric car with power with the same speed as a gas car) is not a lofty goal. It is the baseline goal for any other technology. EV tech will remain outside of the norm until those issues are addressed. The intentions don't matter.

  • Bernie Sanders: We Need More Working-Class Candidates to Challenge Both Parties
  • I had a giant fight with relatives about Bernie Sanders way back when. They were basically arguing that even though they did not fear "socialism" (or so they claimed), they didn't like Bernie simply because he was too old. Biden was the way forward, they said.

I think about that a lot, every time I see Bernie still keeping it real.

  • Elon Musk says too many game studios are owned by giant corporations so his giant corporation is going to start a studio to 'make games great again'
  • Musk should buy Bethesda. Gut it like he gutted Twitter. Start development on something random -- the Elder Scrolls VI: Kingdom of Doge.

When it comes out, it will be a horrible, poorly made mess. Just like a regular Bethesda game but extra enshittified. He can charge extra for it to make it seem super premium.

    People will eat it up.

  • Auto industry’s shift toward EVs is expected to go on despite Trump threat to kill tax credits
  • Sure, but gas station availability is still significantly different than charger availability. And I don't have to wait an hour at the gas station. False equivalency.

  • Canada is already examining tariffs on certain US items following Trump’s tariff threat
  • So much so that one could argue the GOP platform relies on ignorance. It is the only way to get people to consistently vote against their own best interests.

  • Auto industry’s shift toward EVs is expected to go on despite Trump threat to kill tax credits
  • This is not surprising.

I'm still personally in a position where I could not own an EV. A hybrid, sure. But an EV, I cannot charge because I'm in an apartment. EV ownership is tied to home ownership in a way that I see few people discuss.

It's almost like Trump voters had no clue what they were voting for. Or they did, but they had no clue what it meant.

  • Nothing to see here.
  • At this point, any request for information could potentially be used as training data. That includes things like captchas.

I recommend everyone have an extremely literal interpretation of "labor". Unless you have tremendous insight into where your data is going and how it is being used (and perhaps even then), then assume any ask is ultimately an ask for unpaid labor.

Obviously you can't avoid things like captchas, but you can avoid things like this.

Edit: and it should go without saying, but anything you upload to socials is probably automatic training data at this point. The best approach is simply not to engage with corporate social networks.

Though Lemmy is not corporately controlled, the information is publically accessible, so even this post is potential training data to be scraped. That is harder to avoid, lest we stop using the internet altogether, but at least avoiding the corpo routes is a good start.

  • Are there previous historical examples of cult-like followings of US political candidates?

(This post was intended for politics@lemmy.world, but as it seems they don't allow text posts, I'm posting it here)

This post will likely not go over well with everyone and some people may not agree with the premise of the question. Mods please remove if not allowed.

I am curious if the MAGA-esque approach to politics is new for the US, or if there have been other examples of similar political movements which may be considered "cult-like". To better define what I mean, here are some examples:

    • Large amounts of signs bearing a candidate's name being shown by single individuals (e.g. big trucks covered in Trump signs everywhere)

    • Use of a candidate name over the US flag

    • Use of a kind of supporter uniform (e.g. the red MAGA hat)

    • The "alternative facts" of MAGA, where debate can be impossible because supporters believe anyone who is a detractor must be lying

    • In some cases, voter intimidation or coercion from staunch supporters

It seems to me that some of this is new but I'd love to hear other thoughts. I have heard and seen many relatively obvious parallels to German politics in the 20s-40s, but I'm specifically wondering if anything similar has ever been seen in the US before.

Out of everything, I really want to see my helmet in first person

I know a lot of people hate this kind of feature, but there are significant reasons why I think it would make Starfield better.

If I'm not wearing one and I leave my ship, I start taking damage if the planet is dangerous. The only way around that is to be in 3rd person while in the ship (aside from the workaround below). There isn't any indication anywhere as to whether or not you are in a spacesuit, besides your menu and 3rd person view. There is no way to know while maintaining immersion.

Bethesda's workaround is to auto-hide spacesuits and helmets in atmo. This sucks, because I personally like tailoring the look of my character to the environment. But more importantly, I want to know that I am wearing a pressure suit if I'm out in a dangerous environment. I don't want it to feel like I'm a freecam wandering around -- I want to feel like I'm slogging along in a freaking spacesuit.

What's really strange is: if you put on the broken Constellation helmet, you can see the tape piece from the inside. It has an overlay! Sadly this works for no other helmet. Did they just abandon making the textures?

A similar annoyance with a related system: the quick menu does not unequip items. This would make it super easy to change between a spacesuit and regular outfit and not deal with more menus.

I figure there will be a mod at least for helmet overlays eventually, but damn is it frustrating that they definitely thought about it and only implemented it for a piece of masking tape.
