Love the annual tradition
  • Since you linked to Miniminuteman, I assume you are familiar with the excellent Brad Hafford of Artifactually Speaking who dunked on corrected some of Milo's mistakes in a video, and they later collabbed. Archaeology right from the trenches! (I thought I'd mention him anyway, here's a link, too)

  • What's the most severe example of someone you know momentarily acting out of character?
  • Celebrities are just strangers you've heard about. Given enough time, they will all do something you would consider wrong. You might easily forgive and forget someone close to you doing that, but if all you know about someone is that they kick balls for a living and did the idiot dance, that's going to stick out.

The question about "regular people" seems more interesting.

  • *You* are using "let alone" wrong. [CW: prescriptivism]
  • or could only happen if X also did first.

You can't check out a book if you don't go to the library. What I mean by more extreme is this, that it requires the first one as a prior condition, or is otherwise asserted to be less likely to happen.

My on the spot made up definition may not have been the clearest :)

  • You are using "let alone" wrong.

I've seen "let alone" used on Lemmy a good number of times now and, at least when I noticed it, it was always used incorrectly. It's come to a point where I still feel like I'm being gaslit even after looking up examples, just because of the sheer amount of times I've seen it used outright wrong.

What I'm talking about is people switching up the first and last part. In "X, let alone Y" Y is supposed to be the more extreme case, the one that is less likely to happen, or could only happen if X also did first.

The correct usage: "That spaghetti must have been months old. I did not even open the box, let alone eat it."

How I see it used constantly: "That spaghetti must have been months old. I did not eat it, let alone open the box."

Other wrong usage: "Nobody checks out books anymore, let alone visits the library."

Why does this bug me so much? I don't know. One reason I came up with is that it's boring. The "wrong" way the excitement always ramps down with the second sentence, so why even include it?

I am prepared to be shouted down for still somehow being incorrect about this. Do your worst. At least I'll know I keep shifting between dimensions where "let alone" is always used differently or something.

  • I'm not 100% following, but if this is content that's gone from being publicly viewable, uploading it to archive.org seems appropriate (but don't take my word for it). Though if you do upload, it sounds like just the "part files" or just the "full files" would be enough. You could then also seed the torrent there.

The imgur links you might try uploading to ArchiveTeam's imgur-grab project. Looking at the tracker, the archival seems currently half dead, but I'm sure they'll get around to saving what's left. (Unless it's dead because imgur made it nigh impossible, which I can definitely imagine)

  • so fucking tired of google's monopolies

if you want to share a shitty app for the top mobile platform (71%+ market share) instead of the second, even worse platform (28%+ market share) without making it a huge pain in the ass for any recipient, or who knows, even discoverable by random people, you have to pay $20 for the fucking privilege, only to be hounded every few months by google threatening to close your account without takesie backsies because you had three months to scan all your official government papers and send it to them and you fucking failed to deliver. oh you wanted to make a single fucking penny developing apps? they are gonna need a hefty chunk of that coin, oh and, sorry, policy update just came in, we'll fucking fully doxx you under every app you make if you dare monetize. protecting the consumers!!!! very importe!

  • The checksum was verified when the bag was handed to you. You should not have ACKed the transfer if it didn't check out at your end. We cannot be responsible for what you did to it afterwards.

  • The Simpsons: Milhouse voice actor Pamela Hayden retires from show after 35 years
  • The show's quite a bit older than me, but I decided to watch the whole thing.

There was that really long stretch where it was almost unwatchable, peaking around the "Elon Musk is a genius" episode IMO.

Then at S33 or S34 I was surprised by how it just became good again...

    Archiveteam Veoh grab

Just looking at the numbers, it doesn't seem to me like archival will complete before the shutdown date (nov. 11). There are 2million+ elements left, likely 100TB+ of videos.

If you care to help them out, see instructions at the top of the page. Be sure you have a "clean connection", though.

edit: They're saying that the current rate seems to be plenty enough to finish by the deadline. Workers are often left idling at the moment.

youtube mishaps in the Wayback Machine

The September 17th archive of the oldest public video on ashens' channel is saved with the comments section of a completely different video.

(only loads on desktop for me)

Not sure how this happened, usually it's no comments section at all.

If I were trying to make a point here: an archive doesn't even have to be malicious to contain misleading information presented as fact.

    Newsboat - filter youtube shorts?

Is there any universal or newsboat specific way to do this? The RSS feed itself doesn't even hint at it being a short, so probably not.
