If your politics define you so much that you abandon your people or you’re not disciplined enough to keep your mouth shut at family events where you’ll convince no one, that’s on you.
Yes. It is fucking stupid.
But you know what's worse? Supporting a political party over your daughters, who are facing the very real possibility they will have to die simply because of a miscarriage, or no longer having the right to vote. That they will be forced to carry the baby of their rapist. that their daughters may no be entitled to an education- even the shitty ones now provided- the same way they were.
Facing those threats... because you voted for that political party.
They're not staying away, or "turning their back" on family because of politics. They're doing so because his politics objectively suck and absolutely will bring harm to them and millions like them. (that is. women. Not to mention racial minorities, immigrants, anyone whose different from the white, cisgendered, conservative male arch type.)
as long as you feel that threat is imminent- and it's something a 'reasonable person' would agree with under the totality of circumstances- you're free to take them at their word and use reasonable force to prevent it.
Keep in mind, reasonable force might include running away. But if some one corners you, and says they'll fuck you up, you don't have to assume they're full of shit.

Honestly I think the “what happened “ is that Josh had an epiphany when Sheridan challenged him. When was the last time a younger race talked back that way? Not to mention all the time spent mentoring Sheridan, where it wasn’t some random that it could just be written off.
Remember that he still arranged for Lyta to get to their home world so she could be worked over.
Vorlons bio-engineered the younger races to perceive them as gods so they'd be more easily manipulated later. I don't think they'd have hesitated to completely reconstruct Sebastian's personality- if Sebastian even was Jack the Ripper. Or, ah, the original... jack the ripper.
we know that the Vorlons had an interest in human development (because they were creating telepaths as weapons.) It's possible they created Sebastian as an artificial construction, and the memories of being taken in was just to explain where he came from rather than "yeah... you were grown in a vat, bub."
