What will "Sign In With Google" do?
  • In addition to allowing Google to manage the authentication process, signing in with Google allows Google to track your visits. In some cases they get additional data about content you view.

In many cases the mere presence of that button allows Google to track that your device visited the Udemy sign in/sign up page, even if you don’t click it. Google uses this to create and update a profile of you they sell for advertising and other purposes, and exposes you to more risk if your Google account is breached. With a password manager I find using SSO to be about the same level of effort as using my manager’s autofill functionality

  • I don’t think anyone here said what you’re accusing me of saying

This whole discussion started with several people saying “buy a gun and get into a gunfight.” You’re awfully angry and opinionated about a comment thread you didn’t read.

I can respect someone’s right to exist and also respect the bystanders at the train stations right to not get caught in the crossfire over an argument. Yeah, even one with bigots.

You keep making this about victim blaming. I’m sure that makes you feel warm and fuzzy. But it’s not a real discussion. It’s a way for you to shut down discussion of how to non-violently deal with bigots. Not everyone is prepared to escalate or kill over an argument. And encouraging victimized people to confront their assailants in public for some reason is not making them less likely to be victimized.

  • There are more guns than people in the US. Gun violence there is rampant, more children are killed by guns than by cars. The cause of the gun violence IS the gun ownership. It’s the idea that when you have a problem - even a physical one - that the solution is a gun. That idea is unique amongst war-torn countries and the US. So no, shooting up a train station isn’t rampant gun violence. But the idea that you ought to is.

  • Crowd cheered as two transgender women were attacked in Minneapolis, advocates say
  • Aren’t you victim blaming as well, at least by your definition? They could have defended themselves if only they had a gun is putting the blame on them. I don’t really think either of you are victim blaming but at least be consistent.

The assailants are to blame, period. But that does not mean that the victims could not have avoided this. Acknowledging that is not the same as saying it was their fault and they are to blame. It is acknowledging their agency as people being assaulted (first verbally, then physically) and acknowledging that their options go beyond doing nothing, being assaulted, and buying and carrying a lethal weapon with them everywhere, much less shooting in a public building.

  • Fistfights exist everywhere but rampant gun violence does not. “Buy a gun to deal with that hypothetical problem” is terrible advice compared to, idk, deescalation training. Yeah if you’re already on the ground getting punched in the face it’s too late to deescalate but there were choices made before that. Buying a gun so you can shoot up a train station isn’t exactly the most beneficial way to deal with bigots as a society.

  • Losing the fight.
  • You’re worth loving, and I bet your kiddo and partner love you. You are worthy of rest and to feel good. I don’t know how you get here but I know of three people just from your story who are better off having had you in their lives - your kiddo, your partner, and you.

You can do this! One step at a time.

  • Why people consistently vote against their own interests to benefit the rich?
  • Let’s say I’m an American male. I like football. I like the NY Jets, because I also like to suffer.

I don’t have to read the news, or go to news websites, or listen to news radio, to hear about my Jets. I don’t have to risk accidentally learning about what’s going on in the world watching the 6 o’clock news every evening when all I really want to know is the latest saddening Jets news.

I can listen to podcasts that tell me about jets players health, fantasy picks, gossip, the latest games, and betting strategy. In the offseason my podcasts don’t go off air. I can go to websites where algorithms that have already identified me as a Jets fan bury any news about politics or social issues under a mountain of roster updates and advertisements for beer (because Jets fans need it).

Then it comes time to vote. These democrats all seem to talk about stuff I don’t care about or understand. This Trump guy says he will do stuff. I hate the way things are, but I don’t know why they are that way. Corporate monopolies? Antitrust? Voter suppression? All that shit got buried under Aaron Roger’s passing stats. And Trump wasn’t all that bad when he was president. Certainly better than I feel now, and while I’ll pore over individual player stats to take matchups into account when I set my fantasy football roster I’m not gonna go pore over statistics on the economy or anything. That shit is complicated and boring, and football stats are definitely not. So I never have to risk remembering that Trump was pretty fucking bad.

On Election Day I vote for the guy who says he’ll do stuff, and it’s easy to do it, and it’ll be fast, and I’ll like the outcome. I won’t vote for the party that gave up 30 years ago and whose message is basically “come on guys we’re trying really hard but this governing thing is impossible!”

That’s how, basically. That and bigots.

  • Judge orders hearing to review Onion’s purchase of Alex Jones’s InfoWars
  • Jones is raising a stink because he feels like the bidding process was cut short and the rules were changed once his bid was the clear winner. He’s a moron and he’s wrong and he’s also not allowed to bid, so his bid by proxy will hopefully be caught and punished

  • What is a moe??????

I see a lot of communities for moes. Fitmoes, kemonomoes, smolmoes. I don’t know what a moe is - obviously it’s related to anime or Japanese (or otaku) culture but it’s so clearly a thing that I don’t know anything about.

Torn Achilles - Rodgers’ season is done

Couldn’t happen to a nicer anti-vaxxer, either. Have to imagine he’s willing to accept medical treatment now.

    Poor Jets, though.

Went down on the very first drive. Ankle injury, X-rays negative.

This is the most Jets thing imaginable.
