Agree, 100%. I was in charge of Pumpkin Pie today and made 2 practice ones leading up to it. We bought one from a really great local bakery, and I made one. It wasn't a double blind test, but mine was gone by the time the other one got half-way eaten. Big win!
Ah, that must have been the mistake I made the time I made mashed potatoes years ago and they ended up horribly stiff and hard. Nobody ate them haha. I must have gone overboard with trying to make them creamy and fluffy.

I really like Bespoke #1. I should give away all the soaps that are just sorta mid to make room for scents like this. (I only have a sample for now)
I was looking at my aftershaves trying to decide if I had anything in the same ballpark to pair with the soap, and I picked Frankie & Myrna. I'm looking at the scent notes of Bespoke #1 now and Frankincense in Myrrh are both in there, so I nailed it.
Following along with @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social's NovGEMber, today is Pushbutton day. This was my first GEM razor and although I prefer some other GEMs at this point, this one still shaves really well.
Happy Thanksgiving!
That whole series never appealed to me, and I never even looked at the scent notes. A small part of me wishes I had at least gotten samples, though.
Ok, then change it to 10% and do the same math. If it goes up 10%, loses 3% to inflation, and they're required to spend 5%, that leaves a 2% return. Next year they'll have 2% more money, so 5% of that is even more... etc.
I was just saying Adam in the video makes it sound like 5% is bad?, without saying why it should be higher.
RMDs for some personal retirement accounts are in the same ballpark of 5%. Should people in retirement be required to withdraw more?
Are the workers not poor? Isn't that the whole argument?
Anyway, maybe it's a mutual benefit. When people buy stocks, it's a quick infusion of cash to a company, and the company can then spend money on producing stuff, hiring people, etc.
Would you rather companies get loans from banks instead?
There are so many other solutions to low wages.
Meh, that's an oversimplification. Mutual funds don't go around taking money from workers, but the tankies (and whoever else they can convince) think it's clever to go around saying that. Simple minds, maybe?
It's a complicated system, and I'd like to see a LOT of change. There has been a lot of change in some states, but it'd be nice to get the national minimum wage increased.
The wrong guy was voted in. Anti-union, anti-worker, anti-everything. Just a big piece of garbage.
It's just annoying that of all the solutions out there, Lemmy users somehow decided to latch on to "uhhh, stocks steal money directly from workers! How else would the stock price go up?"
Safe travels.
Lemmy, in general, thinks anyone with money is evil, and their money was sucked from the teets of the poor. It's sort of annoying. Not just super wealthy people, either. If you have any sort of investment that increases in value over time, you're a bad person. That money should have gone to poor people, somehow.
Good argument.
Meh. His arguments boil down to "isn't the government better at spending money?" and "Rich people are bad, they shouldn't be rich!". None of his points really have anything to do with these foundations.
The government isn't "better" at spending money. They have a LOT more of it to spend, though. If the US Government got some tax revenue from, say, inheritance tax when Warren Buffet dies, I don't see how Congress is going to say "oh nice, a couple more billion dollars to go in our trillions of dollars budget, lets spend it on education". They're going to spend it on military or whatever. People lobby congress to spend money and make laws that benefit their company/industry. So that cancels out more than half of his 5 minute video for me.
The beginning of his video talks about how the media portrays it, which is a different subject.
Rich people being rich is an entirely different subject. They are rich, and you can't go back in time and change that. So that cancels out another minute or two of his video.
He tries to make a point about how they only have to spend 5% of their money every year, like that's somehow bad? Compare it to a person in retirement: If someone starts with some money in their retirement account with 4% interest (and 3% inflation), if they withdraw 5% of their balance every year, they'll run out of money. The Gates foundation has a plan to spend a lot more than that after they die. They're not required to, sure, but why should they be?
All in all, I still fail to see how this strategy is bad for society overall. Argue all you want that there shouldn't be any individuals with this amount of money, but that's a different subject.
Because more is better!

Great shave with the Damaskeene. I wasn't keen enough to follow along with day 1 of @djundjila@sub.wetshaving's NovGEMber, but now is as good a time as ever!
I love shaving with this razor, but it's admittedly not as efficient as any of my other GEM/Ever-Ready razors.
Some "fun" updates on the Lemmy server: some of you might have noticed a small amount of down time yesterday. Sorry about that. I thought it'd be quick, but it was less than quick.
Either way, the part of Lemmy that handles pictures now has its database handled through PostgresQL. Previously it used something called SLED which was fine, but postgres is better. This also streamlines the backup strategy a bit as the automated backup commands (run with a cronjob) are the same as the main Lemmy database. More importantly, backups can be taken while the software is up and running. We were taking backups without shutting things down before, but we weren't supposed to.
What's wrong with the Clinton Foundation?
Beginning in 2015, the foundation was accused of wrongdoing, including a bribery and pay-to-play scheme, but multiple investigations through 2019 found no evidence of malfeasance. The New York Times reported in September 2020 that a federal prosecutor appointed by attorney general Bill Barr to investigate the origins of the 2016 FBI Crossfire Hurricane investigation had also sought documents and interviews regarding how the FBI handled an investigation into the Clinton Foundation.[16] In May 2023, it was revealed that the Justice Department had continued to investigate the Foundation until days before the end of the Trump presidency, when FBI officials insisted the DOJ acknowledge in writing that there was no case to bring.[17]
Not Bill Gates, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "The primary stated goals of the foundation are to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty across the world, and to expand educational opportunities and access to information technology in the U.S.".
The deer isn't stupid, it knows it's hunting season. Orange would have been better, but if you find yellow laying on the ground, you just go with it.
Similar to a Flying Wing?! Sounds like I need a G-Bar in my life.
I think the part you're talking about does come off. https://www.repairclinic.com/Repair-Library/Part-Testing/8363/Washing-Machine-Agitator-Or-Wash-Plate-Removal
You're right, though. It just spits the stuff out during the first spin cycle. If it doesn't spin fast enough, the softener won't come out, so it might be that you're overloading the machine?
That video isn't super helpful, but the part you're looking for is basically "pull this part off, then move on to the next step".
If it's the other style dispenser, this video describes how to take one apart. They might have videos for your specific model. https://www.repairclinic.com/Repair-Library/Part-Replacement/7476/Whirlpool-Top-Load-Washer-Fabric-Softener-Dispenser-Assembly-Replacement-W11175629
I think it'd be fun to have one of these. I just have no idea what I'd do with it.
My rear brake pads/rotors needed to be replaced.
The first side took 2 hours. The second side took 1 hour.
Removing a synthetic knot from a handle
Not long ago I won a beautiful brush handle from Peter at Wolf Whiskers in a charity raffle. It came with a great synthetic knot, but it was lofted too short for me. I decided to remove it so I can put something else in.
I emailed Peter and he confirmed that all of his brushes are assembled with epoxy. I didn't want to risk steaming the handle, but the Discord chat convinced me to try a 5 minute steam, which I did... 5 minutes isn't long, and it didn't work.
Not wanting to further risk a total failure (the handle is in 2 pieces, plus it has a coin in the bottom), I went back to plan A - mechanical destruction.
Picture 1: I used a box cutter with a fresh blade to slice most of the hair off
Picture 2: I used a combination of a small cutoff wheel and a grinder bit on a Dremel tool and started slowly chipping away at things.
Picture 3: This bit worked the absolute best. It's small, so it took a while. It also created TONS of dust, so I had to do this outside.
Picture 4: This is pretty much the end result. It was very difficult to know when to stop. The end of the knot/epoxy and beginning of "handle" was never really obvious. In the end, the hole was 15.5mm deep, and 26.5mm wide.
I did mess it up in a few spots. The keyless chuck on the dremel has some knurling which made contact with the ferule a few times, despite me trying to be careful. I was able to buff them a little bit and they're only noticeable if you're looking closely at it.
I still haven't decided which knot to put in it, but it's a beautiful handle!
Looking for info about strops
I do realize that this is a bit like asking "what's the best razor?", but what strop should I start with for my imminent Moarteen Koraat?
All I know about strops is they come in leather, cotton, probably some other materials... and I seem to remember hearing denim works fine.
I'm in the USA, but buying from overseas isn't out of the question.
Thanks!
Suggestions for a URL that points towards a different front end.
Sup everyone. Hope you're all enjoying the season of decorative gourds.
I know a lot of you just use mobile apps (yay, mobile apps!), but for the few that also use a web browser, I've been slowly rolling out alternative "front ends". The normal URL (https://sub.wetshaving.social) has the default front end. It is honestly pretty good, if not a tad dated.
Most recently we brought online https://old.wetshaving.social, which is designed to look like old.reddit.com. Even though I'm used to that layout from real-reddit, I'm still finding it a bit lacking for Lemmy, especially from a moderator point of view.
Next, we want to introduce the Alexandrite front end. @sahenders@sub.wetshaving.social already uses this, accessible from https://alexandrite.app/sub.wetshaving.social. Feel free to check it out there until we get ours behind https.
Anyway, we want to run our own instance of Alexandrite, which will be locked to our lemmy server, simplifying the experience for people like @sahenders@wetshaving.social.
All that is to say, we need a URL to put it behind.
So far, the suggestions are:
gem.wetshaving.social - Alexandrite is named after a gem on the devs wife's ring, and of course there's the GEM connection with our hobby. alx.wetshaving.social new.wetshaving.social - simply the opposite of old.wetshaving.social
Please leave your ideas, good or bad. Often our worst ideas turn out to be great, so don't be shy.
THANKS!
A new feature for our server.
Do you miss the layout of OLD reddit? Do you wish Lemmy looked liked that? Well, check this out... https://old.wetshaving.social
Maybe someone will find it enjoyable to use.
There are some limitations to this front-end, but I don't know enough about it yet to give any advice.
Technical details:
This front-end is called "mlmym". https://github.com/rystaf/mlmym
Like everything else with Lemmy, it might break in the future. All it does is change how stuff is displayed. Think of it like a theme.
There are other front ends available, but this is the only one that we've implemented so far. There's one that makes it look like an old-school forum (https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmyBB), and one called Alexandrite that looks very interesting https://lemmy.world/post/1095076. I might play with that one in the future.

Russia using social media to influence US election
A new report by the U.S. intelligence community on Tuesday says Russia sought to help former President Donald Trump in last year's presidential election. But the document also emphasized there was no indication Russia or any other country attempted to alter actual votes.
As Trump fumes, Republicans wince at ‘public nervous breakdown’
Republicans are reeling from Trump’s undisciplined approach to the opening stages of his race against Harris.
When using the WiFi at a couple of nearby hospitals, I can't connect to my self hosted stuff.
I have multiple things running through a reverse proxy and I've never had trouble accessing them until now. The two hospitals are part of the same company, so their network setup is probably identical.
Curiously, it's not that the sites can't be found, but instead my browser complains that it's not secure.
So I don't think it's a DNS problem, but I wonder what the hospital is doing to the data.
All I could come up with in my research is this article about various methods of intercepting traffic. https://blog.cloudflare.com/performing-preventing-ssl-stripping-a-plain-english-primer/
Since my domain name is one that requires https (.app), the browser doesn't allow me to bypass the warning.
Is this just some sort of super strict security rules at the hospital? I doubt they're doing anything malicious, but it makes me wonder.
Thanks!
Also, if you know of any good networking Lemmy communities, feel free to share them.

Is the HACS project still active?
I still get updates for things I have installed, but I haven't seen any new integrations or themes added in some time.
New Mountain Bike - Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Comp Alloy
After wanting a modern mountain bike for the past 5 years, I finally went and got one. It's a lot of fun.
This is replacing a ~2006 Schwinn Mesa that I never ride anymore, because the trails are too rough for it where I live.
The dropper post is compressed if you're wondering why it looks like the seat is too low 😊
New Scent Alert 🚨: Chiseled Face - Apple of Aetherwood
From the artisan:
``` Apple of Aetherwood
This is our first 100% original scent in way too long. It starts with an opening of apples and bergamot, with hints of sage, ginger, juniper berries, and geranium, with a base of amber, tonka beans, cedar, vetiver, and frankincense.
While this may sound rather heavy, it's a rich, but still summery scent that is well grounded, but no so heavy and sweet that it would be overwhelming on a hot day.
Coming later this month! ```
Anyone planning on giving it a try?
The Lather Games theme (from the other website) is:
``` Information Overload
"Product marketing must list at least 10 scent notes. Note: remember that notes are scent descriptors used for marketing - not actual ingredient lists. Caveat: fragrance dupes will count the number of notes listed in the dupe's marketing description - not the original product's description." ```
Some items from Barrister & Mann
Roam Two is a great scent that is not OG Roam, but still great. It wasn't on sale.
Promises - marketed for winter, an interesting scent that's absolutely worth the $5 I paid for it.
Cootie Killer 2.0 hand soaps - I got 6 of them for $2.50 each. I've never smelled Le Grand Chypre before so buying 3 bottles was a small risk, but it was worth it. It smells like a lemon-lime type of soft drink. Fougere Classique is so stanky and awesome, but I might be the only one in the house to use it.

``` Wildcard Wednesday
"Product can be any singular product you want to use - it doesn't even have to be soap. But here's the catch: any subsequent shave by other LG participants on the same day with the same product will be disqualified; only the earliest submitted shave will earn points for being on-theme. Note: For the purposes of counting brands for the Soap Brands bonus point, whatever you use here will be counted as whatever brand it is. Palmolive dish soap? Palmolive. Skippy peanut butter? Skippy. Barrister and Mann Cootie Killer? Barrister and Mann. Home-made soap? Assume it's branded however you would usually brand it if you made something. Two soaps superlathered together? Whoops, that's a disqualification." ```
