Custom themes not showing up?
I'm trying to install this theme on my instance, installed using docker. I've added
volumes: - ./volumes/lemmy-ui/extra_themes:/app/extra_themes
to the docker-compose.yml so I could see the extra_themes folder. I've tried every combination of making folders, standalone .css, .scss in extra_themes, but I can't seem to get the theme to show up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What are the implications I need to be aware of when setting up my instance with Lemmy-Federate?
lemmy-federate.com Lemmy FederateLemmy Federate is a tool to federate new communities in the Lemmyverse.
Can my humble, single-user instance handle it? Are there any settings I need to be careful about? Should I just backup my server and wing it?

How to upgrade from an old version 0.16.6 (ansible)
Hi,
I have an old lemmy, collapse.cat, and I'd like to upgrade it to a more new version (if possible, the current version).
In the ansible repo UPGRADING.md I can see only info from 0.18.3
Where can I have the upgrading notes from 0.16.6?

Unfederated lemmy instance, how to pre-subscribe new users to our main communities ?
Hi,
I am setting up a lemmy instance for a small private group. They are not very technically literate and I don't want to have to explain the concept of joining the right communities as part of the onboarding process.
So I want to pre-load all the right default communities to each user when they create an account. Is there a way to accomplish this ?
thanks !

Posts from a lemmy.ml account seem to not be federating to remote instances right now
EDIT: Looks like this is resolved now. For future reference, I had checked !support@lemmy.world, but I didn't think to check the announcements community, !lemmyworld@lemmy.world. I'll try to remember to check that space next time before posting. Thanks for chiming in, everyone!
ORIGINAL ISSUE:
I've noticed the last two game day threads on !caps@lemmy.world have not federated from my home instance (.ml) to either of the remote instances I've checked so far (<https://lemmy.world/c/caps> and <https://lemm.ee/c/caps@lemmy.world>).
The .ml posts' URLs are <https://lemmy.ml/post/22823350> (from two days ago) and <https://lemmy.ml/post/22885345> (from less than an hour ago).
The fact it's affecting multiple remote instances suggests that maybe there's some issue specific to .ml.
Searching recent support posts, I came across this federation health checker site, which indeed shows a spike in federation time from .ml to .world and lemm.ee, but it doesn't explain the cause.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Also, will the content eventually catch up on those remote instances or is it lost to the sands of time?
Depending on the answers to these questions, I might need to start posting from one of my alt accounts on another instance.
Thanks in advance.

"Set Up Site Administrator" problem "Toastify is awesome!" ?
Hi,
Just booted up lemmy-ui instance for the first time
It asks for "Set Up Site Administrator" !
But as you can see when I press signup, nothing really happens
If I try to login with that account it says "Toastify is awesome!" !
When I check the logs I get
``` root@storage:~# docker ps CONTAINER ID IMAGE COMMAND CREATED STATUS PORTS NAMES 888bfbdd1e18 dessalines/lemmy-ui:0.19.7 "docker-entrypoint.s…" 21 minutes ago Up 20 minutes (healthy) 1234/tcp lemmy-lemmy-ui-1 f60bba3c14ae dessalines/lemmy:0.19.7 "lemmy_server" 21 minutes ago Up 20 minutes 8536/tcp lemmy-lemmy-1 2669e16088ca pgautoupgrade/pgautoupgrade:17-alpine "/usr/local/bin/dock…" 21 minutes ago Up 20 minutes (healthy) 5432/tcp lemmy-postgres-1 f8bf46b02c08 mwader/postfix-relay "/root/run" 21 minutes ago Up 20 minutes 25/tcp lemmy-postfix-1 de4ad69c761e asonix/pictrs:0.5.16 "/sbin/tini -- /usr/…" 21 minutes ago Up 20 minutes 6669/tcp, 8080/tcp lemmy-pictrs-1 root@storage:~# docker logs lemmy-lemmy-1 Lemmy v0.19.7 Federation enabled, host is lemmy.example.ca Starting HTTP server at 0.0.0.0:8536 root@storage:~# docker logs lemmy-lemmy-ui-1 Lemmy-ui v0.19.7 started listening on http://0.0.0.0:1234/ 31 translation imports verified. 93 date-fns imports verified. 4 highlight.js imports verified. Not sure where to go from there ?!
Does my instance federate with communities, or does my user?
General question about Lemmy:
If I as an instance owner search & subscribe to another instance's community, I get "federated" with that community. Does that mean my instance is, or my user is?
Second question:
If I want users at my instance to see posts from communities on other instances, is there a way for me to pull those posts in to my instance? Or, how do I get my users to see other communities' content?
-
Can I, as a user, make my instance fully federate everything from a community on an instance that it is federated with?
At the time that I had joined this instance, I believe none of the posts from !30rock@dubvee.org were viewable on this instance. When I subscribed to the community, most posts then became available, but few-to-none of the comments/votes did. Everything since subscribing is entirely in sync. Check it out yourself; when sorting by Old, you see many posts from well before I had joined this instance, but they do not have comments and have just the OP's initial one upvote: https://feddit.org/c/30rock@dubvee.org?dataType=Post&sort=Old
I have noticed similar behaviour with other communities, so I don't think "actions" are just stuck in the "queue" or whatever. Is there anything I can do to get my instance fully in sync with a particular community? Or could this only be remedied by an administrator of one (or both) of the instances?
How do I get added to the list of instances?
What's the process? Is the list federated, meaning, does my joining this list populate available instances across the fediverse? Or is it isolated to join - Lemmy?
Comments not appearing in the original instance
Probably I'm missing something but I want to make sure this is not a bug and at least understand the Lemmy behavior.
Turns out that I posted a comment with images in a post from Lemmy.world and for some reason I opened the original post in the Lemmy.world instance and I didn't see my post there.
I thought that it might be a problem of the federation that takes time to retrieve new comments or posts, so I waited for a few hours and my comment is not there yet.
I repeated the same test but sending a comment without images (in case the images could be the problem) and it's happening the same.
What am I missing?
Thanks in advance.
Can posts and comments on Lemmy be fully deleted since they still appear with the option to "undelete" after doing so?
I noticed when you delete a post or comment on Lemmy it still shows up on my account with the option to "undelete" it which fully restores it and makes it public again.
Does this mean you can't fully delete them and basically only "hide" them from the community but they will still stay on the server forever? Or is there any option to fully delete them or will that happen after some time?
How to change favicon?
Where is the favicon - is there any documentation around changing it?
I'm not talking about the instance icon, I mean the favicon (svg or ico? png?) which appears in your bookmarks if you bookmark a site.
I'm running in docker
Please let me know what information you need to understand my situation? or if there's anything I can do to help?
Error "couldnt_find_person"
I am trying to follow an account on Lemmy, but I get the error
couldnt_find_person
I'm able to follow the account on Mastodon and some other Fediverse services.
The account is
@bot@bot.viii.fi
/ https://bot.viii.fi/ - as far as I can tell, it complies with all ActivityPub specs.Any idea why Lemmy instances can't follow it?
Why creation of a lemmy.ml now require an email address ?
Hi,
I invited a friend on this instance ( lemmy.ml ) but it appear that now, creation of account require to give an email address !
Too bad my friend live in a dictatorial country and you can't create an email account without identify yourself (either by phone number or other measure).
And of course If you say something that is (or might be in the future) prohibited by the government -> jail ( or quietly ban of all public services, bank account freeze etc..)
So why ! lemmy.ml request now an email address ??
Thanks.
When Moderation Feels Like Censorship: My Experience with Community Bans
Alright, I hate to say this, but it feels like moderation and the powers that be are almost out to get me. Does anyone else experience moderators banning you from communities they’re not even a part of?
I came up with an idea to convert “magic” into something that follows The Law of Conservation of Mass and E=MC^2. And then I got banned from six communities. four of which I was already banned from, or they constantly remove my posts like they’re trying to censor me.
For example, in the Lemmy health group, whenever I post something, they just remove it with no reason. In a science group, they remove my post for being off topic, and when I repost it, making a valid point about how it is on topic, they ban me from two new groups Science and Memes and then reban me from four others. Like, seriously, are they okay?
I’ve even acknowledged that some of my ideas might be a little far fetched and could have crazy implications if fully mastered, like unlimited energy for cities or furthering human evolution. It’s just really weird.
Also I message them to discuss about the removal or ban and they just ignore it.
Though I can bet you that for me posting this a moderator will ban me. Like I’d bet money on it.
The lemmy.ml pictrs server is resizing all images to thumbnail size
Edit: this appears to be fixed now: https://lemmy.ml/post/22203615/14801411
All images in posts on lemmy\.ml are currently being resized to 256px on the longest dimension (width/height), even if they are image posts, not intended to be just article thumbnails.
Is this an intentional change? It makes text in images illegible and means that I have to view the original post to see the original image on every image post.
If this is a deliberate space-saving measure, could it be tuned for a little better usability? For example, increasing the maximum size of image when the post is an image post (as opposed to a web link that generates a thumbnail) and setting a size threshold to trigger resize (ie. most small images could be left alone).
Some examples from my feed:
-
Posts not appearing in communities when other group actors are mentioned.
Posts not appearing in communities when other group actors are mentioned.
Tried making a post (link below) to a lemmy community while also mentioning two other groups. My post never appeared in the Lemmy community. This seems like a bug, when I tried posting to two lemmy communities at once the first went through, the second did not.
Does anyone know what's up with this?
How can I migrate my lemmy account to another lemmy instance?
I'm currently on lemm.ee and I'd like to migrate to lemmy.eco.br, both are using the 0.19.5 backend version.
I remember reading some discussions in the past about being able to migrate instances, is it already possible? Is it being developed? How's the status of this feature?
pictrs - IO error: Permission denied (os error 13)
Hello,
I'm new to setting up a lemmy instance. Followed the guide using docker compose. I have everything running for the most part, but I'm noticing this error in the logs.
Any help on how to go about debugging this would be helpful! As I understand the pictrs container isn't able to access the volume for postgres. But not sure why.
Is it a bug that the response of .../api/v3/comment/list?post_id is always empty?
I try to get comment data for my posts via API from my Lemmy instance, but whatever I try on using the GetComments endpoint it delivers an empty array.
For example ...
GET https://programming.dev/api/v3/comment/list?post_id=20878811
leads to:json { "comments": [] }
I want to ask here, before creating an issue. Has someone a hint?
