I am not Latino nor American so on sketchy ground here BUT Many Latino people are American. You've fallen victim to one of the classic racist blunders.
There are people out there who's ancestors were born in Mexico, and never moved to the US - the border moved over them (California, New Mexico, Texas) - and they continued having families with slightly darker skin, until today.
Plus, the definition of Latino/Hispanic/Chicano/Mexican/South American isn't exactly set in stone, and can mean different things depending on whats convenient at the time.
