Also bad news for US: “drill baby, drill”! Oops
Worst of all, bad news for the environment, as US says “I told you so, plenty of cheap gas for my SUV”
Sorry, a bit frustrated with my fellow citizens
Are you just repeating what you hear on Fox News? There are lots of reasons to object to NCLB, but lower standards isn’t one of them
The cost of geoengineering solutions has been estimated to be
A thought experiment on developing a and maintaining an aircraft fleet to inject dust into the stratosphere. Assuming global cooperation. Assuming that solution works. Assuming you can scale up the dust production without driving up cost. Assuming there are no side effects. Assuming variations in weather don’t trigger war now that there’s someone to blame. Assuming it doesn’t disrupt our food production. Assuming it doesn’t lead to additional extinction events. Assuming -0.3°c over 25 years is enough
About musk being in favor of dropping the EV incentive
The argument that “it will hurt competitors’ EVs more than it hurts our EVs” doesn’t cut it.
Why not? As the first/most profitable EV maker in the US, the only one able to drop prices significantly and remain profitable, the only one that isn’t still trying to repay huge development costs, a manufacturer with half its models too high priced for the incentive, Tesla would do well out of the deal.
Sure, business would drop temporarily but Tesla is in a good position to make it work. Other US manufacturers couldn’t afford it. They’d drop entirely out of the business, leaving it all to Tesla
Amtrak service.
Amtrak owns the Northeast Corridor (Boston to DC) track and not much else
Oh no, that’s not owned by Amtrak. Amtrak owns the NEC Boston to DC, but very little of the rest
The map is Amtrak service, which commonly runs on track owned by freight carriers
The NEC (Acela) is for most of its track, however it’s the same deal only at a higher level.
In theory it’s high speed rail, but only about 50 miles is actually rated at 150 mph, the rest is various speeds lower. There’s some century+ old infrastructure taking it down to like 25 mph in spots. Average speeds end up more like 70 mph.
the US's only problem is that these aren't properly interconnected?
Oh no, that’s only the start of our rail problem. It’s not just the sparseness of active lines and the lack of places to go, but slow, unreliable, expensive
I frequently use Acela, which some claim is our only high speed rail. It is a great choice ahead of either car or flying, Boston to nyc or nyc to dc. The thing is, while it meets the definition of high speed rail, that’s only about 50 miles of the line. Average speed Boston to nyc is like 70 mph.
Conditions go wwwaaaayyyyyyy downhill from there. When we were first dating, my ex tried to take a train out. However there was one a day and it took 7 hours, vs 3.5 hours to drive. That’s more typical service for way too much of the track, assuming you’re in one of the few places with rail service
Even worse some were repurposed to trails. I mean, I love having trails too and these days use them more than trains, but once rail loses a right of way, the cost to build service skyrockets.
Why can’t I have a trail made from closed down stroads instead of closed down rails?
I was just reading something advocating for restoring useful passenger rail to Cape Cod. I should have made the connection years ago but somehow never did - there’s an amazing rail trail through the national seashore area ….. but it used to be passenger rail the length of the Cape. And many of these towns, including P-Town all the way out, already have nice walkable centers that would do well with trains.
We desperately need rail service here. Not only is Cape Cod environmentally sensitive but the bridges are way overloaded. Even if we were to expand the bridges, there’s nowhere for the cars to go. There’s just too many. All too often I’ve sat in traffic for hours listening to the radio blather on about “43 mile backup to the Cape” just to finally get there and be stuck in traffic. We need a train (and no, the Cape Codder is really not especially useful)
Yes, OP should definitely prepare for the worst and hope it doesn’t happen.
Mental Illness is not only an invisible disability but has been scapegoated before. “Just suck it up”, “fake”, I’m sure your brother has heard those and worse. While there’s no way to predict what they’ll consider “waste”, we know they can’t make their goal without cutting a lot of necessary programs. This one does seem risky
I’m sure that’s what most are doing. I’d even say that for most of Project 2025. That’s a conservative wishlist and I don’t see how Trump cares either way about most of it, but the people he’s putting in position clearly do. As long as they are “loyal” to Trump they can get pursue own agenda. As long as Trump remans center of attention and gets personal gain he’s probably good with whatever they want
Yet one of the parties is trying to invest in long term things like education, climate, infrastructure, trying to bring manufacturing back to the US, strengthen unions…..
If my government is going to be irresponsible with money, I’d much rather it be for long term investments than lining the pockets of the wealthy or connected
While I don’t quite believe this connection, I want to point out that legacy car manufacturers heavily depend on imports, especially from Canada and Mexico ….. but Tesla does not
Or who even pay attention to actual news
Yes, both.
- I’ve always been bad at remembering who I met or what we talk about
- I can doom scroll for hours without recalling anything of note
- when things are hectic the daily details disappears
- ask me a technical question and I’ll vomit entire manuals at you
- the best way to get affordable RVs, especially used EVs is to goose the market. Faster growth now gets us more used EVs than trying to make the current ones cheaper.
- the full rebate only applies up to $150k annual income for someone filing single. While it’s well above the median income, that’s far from wealthy, especially in high cost of living areas
Yes in this case it’s good to help those higher middle income people because they’re the ones where it makes a difference now and the most people benefit with the most market growth
Yet all too many still don’t see the need and were actually backsliding. wtf, fellow humans?
Geoengineering is the most expensive, least effective choice. It risks making things worse and it risks triggering conflict over local effects. It’s not a good idea.
… but it’s starting to look like a necessary one, because we keep screwing up even more
Haha fricking euros enjoying their moderate climate - wait until they find out what’s real Midwest winter is like. And they want to take my truck and my gas stove? Eff them.
/too many conservatives probably
It’s not freeing. We may have locked in some really bad changes but it can always get worse. It more critical than ever to get a handle on our green house emissions
Did not sleep in
Already failed my first goal for taking today off, by forgetting to turn off my alarm clock.
So my grand plan for using one of my precious days off is (drum roll, please) ….. taking my kid to a routine appointment that for some reason had to be in the middle of the day
Syrup from a can
It’s the weekend, so I got up early, walked the dog and started thinking about what to make my kid for breakfast.
I spent way too long looking at a four hour recipe (why not, dinner is a smoked pork shoulder that I really need to get started asap) before giving it up
Started off normally: eggs over easy and sausage links. Let’s make the pancakes a little different with bananas and walnut, and top with fruit and nuts ….
Critical question: why do we buy a specific syrup for pancakes? It’s just sugar (or corn syrup). So I used the syrup from canned mangoes!!!! Tastes great but a bit thin and I didn’t use enough. It would be easy enough to thicken up, I’m sure. But why isn’t this the norm? We should have flavored syrup all the time, maybe save money over the maple stuff
Oh, and splurged with egg nog.
A problem repeatedly occurred on https://lemmy.world on iPhone Safari
I generally use Lemmy through my phone browser: safari on iPhone. Starting a few weeks ago. I can no longer get to the primary url. When I try, the progress bar stops partway through, I get a long delay and eventually see “a problem repeatedly occurred on https://lemmy.world”.
I assumed there was some sort of update and was patient but it doesn’t appear to be getting fixed
As a workaround, I’ve been using https://old.lemmy.world
Is this a known problem or can someone help look into this?
Thread for Inovelli Blue?
Does anyone know the current state for re-flashing Inovelli Blue switches to Thread? I haven’t been paying attention the last year so I don’t know if they released that or if it works reliably. I did try looking through the community pages without finding anything definite (plus that might not include any actual experience trying it)
I recently saw a couple new Thread devices, so maybe it’s time to start using that. My entire Zigbee network was intended to be flashable to Thread: all I have is SkyConnect and some Inovelli Blue switches. More importantly, that should be a good foundation for a strong mesh to support other devices (and I don’t have a reason for a strong Zigbee mesh). I know SkyConnect multi-protocol didn’t work out but I believe reflashing to Thread is fine. I know Inovelli Blue can’t be reflashed over the air, but that’s ok. Is there Thread firmware and what are your experiences with it?
Dinners ready in two hours. Who wants some?
Throwing this out there in case someone has advice …..
I got a smoker this summer and have been having a great time cooking new (large) meals. But my kids are back at college and I can’t depend on my ex. How do you find people to eat your meals?
It’s a weird situation where it’s a huge pellet grill and smoking tends to focus on large pieces of meat, but not everything freezes well. I want to go gangbusters with feasts, just when I no longer have anyone to appreciate it. Anyone know if there is such a thing as cooking clubs, or something? How do you find one or how do you break into one as a single guy?
Fwiw
- kids are back from college today, ex is coming over and ex-FiL
- smoked duck with orange maple glaze
- chicken for those not willing to try duck
- rice pilaf
- arugula salad with toasted pine nuts
- I plan to throw chocolate chip cookie dough in a cast iron skillet for brownies and top with ice cream
What to look for in a CCS adapter?
I just got back from a 1,200+ mile road trip and Superchargers, especially with the trip planning, made it easy!
However non-Tesla chargers seem to be more common in Connecticut. I went to try one and discovered I don’t have as complete a set of adapters as I thought. What if I need to charge at a CCS charger?
I looked online and the price range is huge. I see a $64 and one close to $300, and several in between. Do you know what the difference is or what I should be looking for? Is there one you’d recommend? Is it even worth it, since Superchargers are everywhere, plus I charge at home, and CCS is likely to go away in a couple years?
Road trip! No more range anxiety
I just got back from my first real road trip in an EV: over 1,200 miles in nine days! I stayed with my brother most of it, but did not even ask to plug-in. I saw many destination chargers, but filtered them out.
I charged only at Tesla superchargers. There was always one close to on my way, and I never felt too delayed. My first charging stop was at the Meadowlands, which is apparently a huge mall when they’re not playing football. It was a huge surprise to see the pop up to continue the trip before we were able to find the food court. I did follow the pattern from trip planning, to charge up frequently for short periods of 10-20 minutes, rather than wait for a full charge, and it worked very well. Basically each stop was to grab a soda, maybe use the bathroom, and go, and I always had a couple hundred miles of charge available
There was only one spot where I was worried. After sitting in traffic over an hour with the AC running, I was getting worried about reaching the planned supercharger. I exited to try a different brand, but discovered I didn’t have that adapter. Oops. However in the end, we did make the planned stop with a decent amount of charge left, despite the traffic delay and a couple detours
The final leg of the trip was 350 miles through mostly rural are with fewer super chargers. Trip planner recommended 2 quick charging stops, but by the time we ate lunch, the first stop was more than sufficient. Even in this rural area, supercharging wasn’t inconvenient!
No more range anxiety here it, it worked very well …… although admittedly in urban areas in the northeast where superchargers are fairly common. Still, destination chargers were common and I could have plugged in at my brothers.
Spicing up the neighborhood
I tried Paprika chicken! The jalapeños were the thing: I could smell them from the neighbors house!
Huge hit, very forgiving, and fast, but more of a grill item than a smoker item. My Traeger made it easy and almost foolproof, with the wireless meat thermometer. The recipe has a huge hit with my family! Love that salsa, but if you don’t have much spice tolerance, beware.
This was actually the first time I’ve cooked dark meat chicken with skin on since I was a kid, my teenagers’ first introduction to that, believe it or not. That’s where the recipe falls down. The cooking temperature was perfect for the meat, but there’s no way you’re getting crispy, browned skin with that.
I did set the grill to 365° instead of 350° but that wasn’t enough to make a difference. Granted, I haven’t checked the accuracy of the temperature setting, but it cooks food in the expected time at the intended temperature, and I have confirmed the meat thermometer matches. Next time I use this, I’ll try the last 10 minutes at max temp to see if that helps
Has anyone gotten a good crispy skin from their Traeger? What time and temp? My propane grill gets much hotter, but I really don’t want to use both for one food
Oink & cluck
Finally an all around success! Helps to be a bit less ambitious and pick something that uses less time.
Oink and cluck. I’ve done bacon wrapped stuff before but really like this prosciutto better!
I did have to have help making the salsa, and the sweet potatoes needed a lot more time than the other veggies. I’d never had salsa like that but it was perfect to liven up plain root veggies.
Outstanding dessert and easy to put together.
Fishy, fishy, cross the ocean ….
Continuing the learning experience …..
- on stovetop: https://spicysouthernkitchen.com/pecan-rice-pilaf/
- made this morning: Pineapple Gazpacho
- sourdough loaf (did not make)
Absolutely fan-effing-tastic
But, things to learn…
- I planned ahead and bought ahead! Yay!
- recipe manager generated a shopping list. Yay!
- great recipes, but a lot of work to bring them all together
- but missed one bunch of cilantro
- saved by the meat thermometer! — the import to my recipe manager somehow lost “step 3, increase temperature to 450°”
It really pays to be flexible, and I had compromised and bought pre-made loaves of sourdough. When things were looking late, I served the gazpacho and bread as an appetizer.
The pecan pilaf was not only outstanding, but it was not at all affected by sitting in the pot 40 minutes waiting for salmon! This is a lot of work for rice but I highly recommend!
Salmon was really good (not dried out) especially with that avocado salsa, despite cooking over an hour (30 min at 165°, 15+ min getting up to temp, 20 or so at 450°, 5-10 min oh shit I didn’t allow notifications for the meat thermometer ). Kudos to salmon for being so forgiving!
Where are some great smoker recipes?
I found a two year old thread on great smoker recipes on that other site. Where do you get yours and what is your favorite?
Let’s add some resources to the sidebar - I’m not going to blindly add from that other site but will be happy to add anything you find useful, even if just copy-paste from there
Smoked Ribs take too long
The big grill claims to fit 7 racks of ribs…. But three St Louis fills it pretty good. I may need to make the corn bread inside.
This time I planned slightly better, thanks to a recipe app, and generated shopping lists, but …… didn’t get to the store until morning, got a late start, endured massive crowds and got a really late start
This is not the recipe I wanted to follow but it’s the one I have time for: https://www.traeger.com/recipes/all-american-spareribs
Traeger Recipes
The best pellet grill recipes for grilling and smoking turkey, chicken, steak, bacon, brisket, salmon, vegetables and everything in between. Get inspired.
Traeger has some great recipes and videos at their website - definitely my first place to look as I learn the ropes (no, not affiliated with them, nor profit in any way. Just a fan).
However when I tried to somehow group or save multiple recipes, I couldn’t make them convenient for a meal - lots of clicking back and forth, too much searching yet again for the same recipe
- trying to print or share - they only send the link, which is not useful.
- “Saving” only worked for one item
- You couldn’t effectively create a meal plan with multiple recipes - no way to assign tasks, combine shopping lists, coordinate steos
Anyone have tips on how to use them more effectively?
First smoke
I don’t know if my neighbors ar going to love me or hate me - tiny yards all close together so they’re going to smell what’s cooking…..
I have no idea what I’m doing but go big or go home: here’s two big ass pieces of meat (14# pork butt came apart)
First obstacle: how do you pick up a 14# hunk of hot meat? I don’t think any of my cooking utensils can handle that. I didn’t leave room for the tray of Mac and cheese I wanted to add, plus it will eventually be cooked
Coming soon …..
So, no posts, no comments, not even a description on the community. Are we doing this or what?
Without a description, what should we even post here? Maybe something like “TRACKING INFO WAS JUST UPDATED. MY TRAEGER IS COMING SOON!!!!!”
Hazy skies with the Sox
A few years back at Fenway Park watching the Boston Red Sox
I think this was the game where I was carded and didn’t have my license to prove I’m old enough to drink. Lol, found one of the guys literally half my age to buy beer for me. I guess thanks for the entertainment at stupid adherence to paperwork despite greyed haired reality staring in disbelief
Blueberry lemon and the Dropkick Murphies
Finally able to turn off the heat, sitting out on the deck.’c “Shipping off to Boston” with the dog, listening to the Dropkick Murphies with an adult “lemonade”. SUMMMERTIME!!!!
Ok, not so scenic, especially since I didn’t include the dog, but let’s see you do better. Please. Let’s see beer in the Alps and places more scenic than my deck
Where to get paint touchups?
Yesterday at the grocery store, someone keyed my new car. It’s not like I could have done anything to annoy someone, since there wasn’t anyone parking in the next spot when I pulled in, and I was almost perfectly centered in my spot
I just got the car in November, and it’s that really nice new navy blue. Looks fantastic. And now it’s keyed. I hope it was at least an acciden somehow, because I’ve read too many articles online about people just wanting to see the world burn
For anyone else who had to have the paint touched up, can I take it to a normal body shop? Or does it need something special? Where would I look?
