Taxing Farm Animals’ Farts and Burps? Denmark Gives It a Try. Cows and pigs produce a large share of planet-warming methane. A new tax is part of a plan to clean that up.
  • Unfortunately I think this will disproportionately affect smaller farms.
The problem is with factory farms with thousands of animals, but they can foot the extra tax bill no problem and simply raise prices to keep their profit margins and smaller family farms will hurt.
If the punishment for a crime is a fine then it's only a crime for the poor.
Putting limits on how many farm animals can be possessed and encouraging the public to eat less meat would probably be more effective at actually reducing emissions.

  • Trudeau opposes allowing Russia to keep ‘an inch’ of Ukrainian territory
  • War weariness is a thing.
I wouldn't be surprised if a non-insignificant number of that 1/3 that doesn't oppose Russia keeping some territory are just tired of the war and want it to be over.
3 years is a long time to live in a war torn country with frequent power outages and food shortages. People tend to disassociate when it doesn't affect them directly and if they happen to live on the Western side of Ukraine, losing territory on the Eastern border will have less of an effect on them than continued food and power shortages.

  • Will Firefox die for good if Google is forced to sell off Chrome?
  • The opposite. Google won't be able to leverage chrome to drive website design and Internet policy anymore and it'll give smaller companies an opportunity to get a better foothold in the market. That's the whole point in breaking them off from Google in the first place.

  • Trump chooses former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as NATO ambassador
  • If the United States leaves NATO they no longer have veto power. It's probably more advantageous to Putin to keep the United States in NATO and kneecap any efforts by the entire organization to resist Russian aggression than it is to simply remove the US from the organization.

  • Trump likely to use antisemitism claims to launch crackdown on US universities
  • Exactly, the phrase "violence is never the answer" breaks down pretty quickly when your adversary is not only okay with using violence, but opens with it.
Passive action against violent people facilitates oppression.

  • Dentists are pulling ‘healthy’ and treatable teeth to profit from implants, experts warn
  • I have a broken molar on my left side and I've been dealing with it for years because I couldn't afford to have all 8 teeth removed that the dentist wanted to pull because I lost a corner of one molar.
If was explained to me that without that one tooth, the teeth on either side of it would move to fill the gap and would cause other problems, and without the teeth on the bottom the teeth on top would start to drop down and cause more problems, so if i wanted that one tooth fixed I'd need to pay thousands of dollars to get all the teeth on my left side pulled.
Being the gullible idiot I am, I trusted the medical professional and decided that if it had to be done that way, I'd just have to live with it the way it was because I didn't have thousands of dollars to pay for the surgery and my job at the time didn't offer dental.

  • California city to pay woman nearly $1m after police dog tore out her scalp
  • $1,000,000 isn't nearly as much as people think it is. It's not even enough to retire on if you're middle aged.
You could live extravagantly for a year or two on that money max.
If you lived modestly at $50,000 a year of expenses (less than the median) you'd get 20 years out of it and you'd have to go back to work if you're younger than 60.
If you lived comfortably at $100,000 a year you'd get a decade at most of of that money, if you're younger than 70 you'll probably have to go back to work.
This article says she was 24 when it happened in 2020, so it's safe to presume she's 28 now.
If she's extra careful with the money and doesn't spend it on anything fancy she can live until maybe 48 on that amount of money, considering all income is taxable though it's safe to assume she'll have to give half of it up to taxes and she could probably stretch it for 10 years to 38. But, seeing as the charge was shoplifting she's probably not in a good situation financially and almost certainly has no experience managing that kind of money.
She'll get used to living a lifestyle she can't maintain and it'll likely be gone in less than 5 years.
This settlement isn't making anything right, they're handing her a curse and it seems cruel to give someone a taste of a lifestyle they'll never be able to afford again.
This is an insultingly low sum of money and it's likely to cause her more pain in the long run than anything.

  • How does Lemmy feel about Trump's new FCC pick?
  • and to be compelled not to censor content.

I think we all know that means removing any safeguards against misinformation.
They're absolutely going to ramp up censorship of anything anti-Trump.
They're going to promote "free speech" the same way Leon Musk does on Twitter.

  • Are illegal streaming sites really getting shut down a lot lately or has it always been like this?
  • It's more or less always been like this.
p2p services like Napster were getting shut down and replaced with limewire, then limewire was shut down and replaced with FrostWire.
The Pirate Bay has been shut down at least half a dozen times, demonoid was shut down 6 years ago, Grooveshark was once an ad free music streaming service but tried to go legit at some point to save themselves.
Every few years the movie and record industries get a burr up their ass and go for the piracy and streaming websites. But these websites have always been like a Hydra and when one of them is killed, several more eventually pop up to take their place.

  • can't highlight text at all to copy.

Long pressing on a comment has always collapsed it unless you were replying to the comment, then you could long press to highlight a string of text to quote for a reply. Now, long pressing closes the parent in reply mode and there is no way to highlight text to copy for quoting purposes.

every left leaning person should be exercising their second amendment right.

Every self-respecting Democrat or leftist who cares about themselves or their family should own a firearm and know how to properly and safely use it. We're entering a time where it may be critical that you need to defend yourself. It is not out of the realm of possibility that you or your family may be targeted in the not distant future for your political leanings. We all know that the Republicans have guns because they never shut the fuck up about them, and we also know that in their wildest wet dreams Trump will let them run the streets gunning down anyone who is isn't white or anyone who voted Democrat. They have guns, they know how to use them, how are you going to defend yourself when they come for you?

why isn't anyone calling for Trump to drop out.

I get it, Biden is old and that's a problem, but why doesn't anyone seem to have a problem with the fact that Trump is almost the same age, has 34 felonies, raped at least 2 women, went to Epstein's Island 11 times, sexualized his own daughter, stole classified documents, aligned himself with Xi and Putin, and can't remember common names?

Is all of that really better than being 2½ years older than he is right now?

    Based on a true story

My OS is on a 512gb M.2 drive, but the main storage on my laptop was a 1TB HDD, it started making noise about 2 weeks ago so I backed everything up onto a 1TB SanDisk USB SSD. This afternoon it got very clicky when I booted it up after work and icons for a few games I had stored on it, like KSP and YUZU, disappeared from the desktop and taskbar.

    Status Of things - 2024/03/04

    dennisetaylor.org Status of Things

I'll be trying to keep this page up to date with the current status of my projects (and generally failing, from the looks of it). Check here for updates. As of 2024-03-04 Status Update The Bobiverse The release date for book 5 (Not Till We Are Lost) is set to Sept 5 2024. Option on ...

We already knew the September release date, nothing has changed on that front.

But, There are a few other interesting things. Mainly We're likely to see at least 5 more bob books but that's subject to change. And Roadkill 2 is coming!!

PEMDAS is technically correct, but morally wrong

If we're supposed to be able to understand math as easily as a language, we should be able to read it from left to right like a language. Yes, I know there's lots other languages that go right to left or top to bottom, but the point is you don't have to go jumping around the page or sentence figuring out which word should be read first based on which characters it contains. We put the first word first, then the second word second, etc. Why can't we just write equations in the order they were meant to be solved?

Book 5 is currently set for release on September 5th 2024, Dennis isn't happy about it either

Sorry for the disappointing news everyone. Looks like audible wants to hold it back until Q4 for some reason despite it being complete.

Tracking and marketing metadata probably make up a significant share all data storage available worldwide.

Edit: I mean to say just a significant amount, not a majority. That's obviously porn.

    Book 5 and Spoilers

With "Not Till We Are Lost" likely to release sometime in the next ~60 days or so It's probably time to discuss spoilers leading up to and following release. So for one, There will be a discussion mega-thread, but there won't be any rules discouraging posts for anyone who wants to discuss anything specific, which brings us to rules for posts. I'm going to keep it relatively short and simple here as it's mostly common sense. No Spoilers in post titles This should be a given but I'm sure someone still needs to hear it. Use spoiler tags in post body Yes, you have to click on the post to see the post body in most cases, But some apps and instances show a preview of the post body text and it can be visible to people who didn't intend to view the post.

These rules will remain in effect leading up to release (samples that may be released before the book count as spoilers) and for 14 days after the release.

    mod tools?

I moderate a very small community but I'd like to be able to pin posts and have access to other general moderator tools like removing posts/comments and locking threads. It doesn't seem that I can do any of that with Connect and it's cumbersome at best to try to do it on a mobile browser. Are there any plans to implement mod tools? Or is there a setting I missed somewhere that enabls them?

    Commmunity feedback thread

So, I'm new to the whole moderating thing and I'm looking for feedback from the community. What can we do to increase community engagement? Would you guys like to see weekly discussion threads? Book 5 speculation? Writing prompts based in universe? As the mod, what can I do for you to make this community better?

This is the only Lemmy client I'm using so it may be a sitewide issue, but is anyone else getting threads from 2-3 years ago mixed in with the other results when sorting by "Hot"?

    A Theory for Book 5

    spoiler

Across all the books something that becomes obvious if you pay attention, but is never touched on directly, Is that there is replicant drift between the GUPPI units as well as the Bobs. There's different attitudes, some are flippant, some cooperative, and some downright disrespectful. Now lets take a look at something ANEC mentioned in heavens river:

"AI is not achievable through algorithmic refinement. It requires a process of simulated annealing to achieve." to which Bill replied: "So they're elvoving the AI?"

If you think about it the Bobs have been slowly annealing GUPPI with every generation and even leaving him some room to grow, slowly evolving him. My theory is that GUPPI will unintentionally become the first AI the bobs create. This would work well with the parallels the Bobiverse has with ExForce. Even borrowing the term "Skippies" from Skippy, the insolent AI that shares a lot of characteristics with several of the GUPPI's that don't yet have the ability to be outright transgressive and borderline maliciously compliant.

That's all I have for now, only Dennis and the editors know exactly what will happen but I'm curious to hear any other theories anyone else has.
