  • Oh man....this is making me remember a conversation I had with someone in high school that wanted to get $2 and was willing to pay something like $5 for it.

The guy was not the sharpest tool in the shed.

  • The message to Democrats is clear: you must dump neoliberal economics
  • You can always rely on Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The post mortem is still on-going but there are two conclusions that ring true for me (so far anyway):

    • Harris failed to reach middle-Americans: she didn't make many statements about how she was going to tackle inflation and help the average American. Instead she spent WAY too much time trying to secure Republican endorsements.

    • As a result, voters stayed home. Many of middle America aren't politically active. In the same way, they don't see themselves being affected by Trump's policies (for right or for wrong). Many of these voters did vote for Obama but couldn't be bothered to vote for Harris.

Trump is the first Republican president to win a plurality of votes what 20 years? Trump ran a campaign of "ImMiGrAnTs ArE tHe PrObLeM!1!1!1". He was so unhinged that voters should have voted against him. The numbers so far show that he won a similar number of votes as he did in 2020 so it's looking like his base came out to vote but Democrats didn't.

    Republicans fall in line.

    Democrats fall in love.

    We need better candidates.

  • Republican senator introduces bill to abolish US Department of Education
  • Absolutely no politician deserves a seat at the very table they are trying to destroy.

No Republican (with the exception of two -- Romney and Cheney) has condemned J6 and until they do, they absolutely should not get to sit in office.

    Yet...here we are.

  • Senators Say TSA’s Facial Recognition Program Is Out of Control | You can opt out of facial recognition at airports, for now, but the TSA wants to make the invasive technology a requirement
  • To be stupidly fair, they are familiar with what a nail clipper looks like so it's easy for them to find and screen them.

But if a legit bomb part went through security, they'd probably not recognize it due to its novelty.

The next bomb through TSA is going to be some popular toy like a Tickle Me Elmo or some other shit.

  • ISPs say their “excellent customer service” is why users don’t switch providers
  • Verizon FiOS is, very surprisingly, decent. Of course when compared to Comcast, the bar is pretty low. And compared to other Verizon offerings, you'd think FiOS would be shitty but it is honestly very refreshing.

Anytime I've had to call for an issue, it was fixed within a reasonable amount of time. One time it was some sort of speed/connectivity issue and they figured it out at the neighborhood junction within a day and another was to bury my fiber and that was within a week.

Comcast charged me for a technician to come out each time. I had to fight that charge each time. Took MONTHS to get that fixed.

  • Trump’s evasion of January 6 accountability will echo for next four years and generations to come
  • I suspect that the reason Jack Smith dropped charges was so that jeopardy would not be attached. I'm not a lawyer but reading his statement read as an indictment against the Justice Department and the federal court system, begging them to either codify into law that Presidents are king or get rid of the rule to not charge sitting Presidents.

And I would be remissed if I didn't remind everyone that there is nothing in the Constitution saying Trump can't serve his criminal sentence in a state prison while also serving his term as president.

  • Trudeau opposes allowing Russia to keep ‘an inch’ of Ukrainian territory
  • With the war this long, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a segment of the Ukrainian population that says, "Let's just end this. If that means we give up some land for peace, and Russia pays for it, it's worth the lives saved."

I've been reading a lot about the US revolutionary war and there were definitely those who wanted an end to hostilities even if it meant returning to the crown.

I'm not saying it's right because we all know Russia would absolutely invade again. But it might help explain some of the 1/3 that don't agree with not giving an inch to Russia.

  • Can trying to put yourself forward for additional freelance roles besides ones you've been hired for harm your chances at BOTH roles?
  • I get the feeling you're like me and you might be over-thinking it. If you're new, if I heard it, I'd pass it off as you sharing your skillset. Remember they hired YOU because they believe you can do the work.

If you want to help them edit, ask to sit in on their sessions. Tell them you want want to be a fly on the wall to see the process, etc. I've done that in the IT world with great success. It shows you're curious and eager to learn.

If they say no, then you have your answer -- they may be only looking to you to fill one box. Most managers understand that you want to do more than what you're doing now.

It just means that Linux users and developers are more diligent in finding and removing vulnerabilities.

Bank of America will (stop|continue to) Accept $1 bills

    Which is it?!

This headline came up in my news feed, from a very dubious source so I decided to investigate.

Headline after headline, many from identical sources, about how Walmart and Bank of America are either going to stop taking $1 bills or keep accepting them. The headlines read like a FUD article and I refuse to click through to read the details.

I can't find a reputable news source for this story so I'm assuming it's fake news.

It shouldn't be this easy to manipulate news feeds.

Did Biden ever release Trump's Resolute Letter?

I've been searching around for a copy of the Resolute Letter that Trump left for Biden. The letters are typically released within a few days of entering office but this was never done because Biden wanted to talk to Trump first before doing so.

It's been almost four years. Surely it's been done by now and I can't seem to find any article with the letter or anything on the official White House website. I'm tempted to submit a FOIA request for it but wasn't sure where to start.

Self-Hosted (or github pages hosted) "clipboard"?

Good day self-hosters! I'm not exactly sure what to call what I'm looking for besides a "clipboard". Let me describe my problem and what my ideal solution is.

At work, I get a lot of slack DMs that ask for the same information. It's not consistent to the point I would just pin the information in my Windows 11 clipboard. But it's often enough that I'd prefer to give people the same information each time it's asked.

I'm limited in what I can build on my work computer. In an ideal world, I'd do what Gilfoyle did and make and bot but I lack the time and skills for such a task. Right now, I solve this with a very long notepad, which is subject to copy/paste errors. If I don't highlight everything correctly or if I accidentally copy over an existing line. That kind of thing.

What I was thinking was a very simple website where the items I'm copying are in tiles that can be tagged and searched. Once I find what I'm looking for, I can click the button to copy it to my clipboard and then go on with my life.

Due to restrictions on my work computer, I cannot host containers or host a website, though a fully self-contained HTML page with javascript I could do.. Ideally this is something that can be build using Github Pages build with Jekyll but so far, I haven't found a theme that mimics the behavior I'm looking for and I lack the time (though not the skills) to build it.

I'd prefer the github route so that I can share the page with others on my team who get asked similar questions.

I am also able to deploy a website via Github Pages (with .nojekyll).

I have to think something similar to this already exists but I imagine the restrictions on having no backend might be the challenge. Love to hear your thoughts!

    Edit: added context for Gilfoyle

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I should have added in this post that my work does not allow software with Copyleft (Don't get me started. I'm a strong copyleft advocate and it annoys me that my company only takes and never gives back to OSS). I'm going to give TiddlyWiki out. License is friendly with my work, seems simple enough to run.

That said, Logseq seems to be pretty interesting as well. Might try this out on my on machine to see if I like it.
