Publishers are absolutely terrified "preserved video games would be used for recreational purposes," so the US copyright office has struck down a major effort for game preservation
  • When the programmers of these old titles are saying they’d rather have people keep playing them even if they’re only available on archive site, I say screw the publishers.

  • Not strictly related to HomeKit, but this blew my mind
  • This is what I’ve been waiting for. Super easy.

  • what's the best way to react if a guy stares at you like he wants to have sex with you when you're doing yoga?
  • If I were a woman this is what I’d do. Great, loyal animal, that will give you peace of mind knowing they’ll keep the creeps away.

  • Australia passes landmark social media ban for children under 16
  • And how exactly are they going to enforce this? Kids always find a way around … always.

  • All the other brands went along
  • It’s really not. I have one on my work laptop and have never plugged an Ethernet jack into it. That stays permanently in my dock and gets transferred to the laptop via USB-C. All other non-desk work is done via … WiFi. Shock! Literally can’t tell the difference when making money.

  • Nintendo targets Reddit pirates in piracy crackdown
  • Not to mention discord channels you have to be invited to.

  • Good permanent Christmas lights?
  • Ones that will last will cost you. Oelo Lighting Solutions, Jellyfish, and Gemstone are all great but $$$$.

  • Not knowing how money works, yet running a business
  • I never ask why since it’s damned obvious, I don’t work for a charity either. I ask why this company. Get much better insight into candidates.

  • Fellow Americans, which family member are you not looking forward to seeing for Thanksgiving that you know will bring up politics?
  • None. We have made politics a taboo subject at dinner. We know we don’t agree (older generations vs younger) and would rather converse about things we enjoy like the grandkids etc.

  • Imaginary numbers are more real than infinity.
  • Well yes and no. With running or writing those actions will stop at some point because we aren’t capable of doing them forever. Infinity doesn’t stop.

  • Imaginary numbers are more real than infinity.
  • I think of it this way, infinity is an action. It’s not a “thing.” This is why it’s not countable. It doesn’t stop to be counted.

  • How can I get better at talking?
  • Probably need to see a speech therapist.

  • Do you use the popcorn button?
  • When I want a quick bag, sure do. Kirkland (Costco) popcorn is great and dirt cheap.

But when I want great popcorn we use our popcorn popping machine with some coconut oil, flavocol, and butter topping. This is the recipe the movie theaters use.

  • Do you use the popcorn button?
  • Panasonic inverter microwaves are the best in the industry for residential. They’re the only ones that can control the microwave power level without cheapening out and turning it on and off only. The over the range microwaves aren’t any better unless they’re an Advantium type that cooks with light and convection fan.

  • Do you use the popcorn button?
  • Unfortunately, this doesn’t work well in either a) dry climates and/or b) high altitude. We have to add about 45 secs to the popcorn mode or it stops short for us. Took a while to get that right.

Fortunately, this is normal at high altitude. Normal cooking rules don’t apply and always have to be modified. Lol.

  • Percentage of Each State Taken Up by Corn Fields
  • Drove through North Dakota once. It was all corn for hours. Absolutely stupid amounts.

  • How can I help build this community
  • Hi there!

I’ve got 3 Apple TVs, 3 HomePod minis of which 1 is the preferred hub. For some reason my setup is a lot more stable on a mini. The Apple TVs over Ethernet always ends up causing no response.

I’ve got a mix of devices. Lutron Caseta switches, Meross garage opener, Tradfri bulbs, Tapo bulbs, Tapo outlets, Meross thermostat extension cord, Meross switch, Ring security system and cameras/doorbell, Harmony smart hub, string lights, rainbird sprinkler system, and various airplay 2 devices from home theater receiver to an AirPort Express 2 running my office speakers.

Running various automations for lights coming on and off, fans on and off and shutting the garage door later in the evening if we forget. As you mentioned, I’ve also got a homebridge server to get Ring into the system. It’s also bridging the Rainbird sprinklers, Harmony smart hub.

I’ve been trying to get products that only work on Matter thread but they’re harder to find. Most of my newer stuff is Matter over WiFi. I’ve got an extensive Eero mesh system that works well so I’m not too worried about over saturation.

  • Cutaway of a Roman *domus* (upper-class urban house)
  • Oh they’re still out there. Just in a higher class.

  • Which cloud photo backup service do you use and recommend?
  • iCloud since I’ve been all in on the Apple ecosystem since … 2004ish (Tiger was a great OS).

    Pros:

    • Super fast
    • Doesn’t need to backup system files
    • No limit to # of devices, only storage size
    • Reliable
    • Restore process is arguably the easiest out of any solution
    • Priced fairly (despite people complaining, yeah their free tier is useless)

    Cons:

    • Only backs up Apple devices.
    • Relies on connection speed alone, no shipped hard drive option

If I had to pick a platform agnostic one it’d be Backblaze.

    Pros:

    • Solid
    • Light on resources
    • Fairly priced (last I checked) and unlimited is reasonable
    • Can do shipped hard drive restores if needed.

    Cons:

    • Limited backup controls
    • Must provide key to decrypt on restore
    • Restore process sucks
  • AYANEO is making another Android-based gaming handheld – but this one has a trick up its sleeve. The Pocket EVO is the world's first Android handheld with a 7-inch 120Hz OLED screen, according to the manufacturer. That high refresh rate should mean smoother gameplay, assuming there are enough titles to support it.

Based on the design of the AYANEO 2S, the Pocket EVO boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 chipset, which will ensure it has plenty of grunt for AAA mobile gaming and emulation.

I miss getting on a plane and reading Skymall to see what batshit crazy stuff they had to sell. Anyone else?

Layer is closer at one end than other

My prints come out very well but I’m noticing on larger prints that one corner of my bed prints tighter than the opposite. What’s causing this?

Printing on an Ender 3 Pro with upgraded metal extruder, beefier bed springs and metal levelers, and upgraded hot end. Not direct drive yet and no auto bed leveling.

Unaffiliated Voter in CO - Who to vote for in Primaries?

In Colorado this year (2024), unaffiliated voters were mailed out their ballots for both the Democratic and Republican Presidential Primaries and get the chance to vote in one or the other (NOT both).

I’m fairly centrist. I lean left on progressive ideals and right on economic (yeah, it’s fun /s).

The question is, who’s should I put my vote in for? Is it better to vote for Biden or another candidate in the Democratic, or another candidate that isn’t Trump in the Republican. Again, we can only vote in one of the primaries or our vote won’t count if we vote in both. It’s one or the other.

    What is best?

Bug: Editing a comment doesn’t stick

When editing a comment and posting the edit, if you then want to re-edit the comment you get the original comment, not the edited version. This only happens when using the 3 dot menu on the right of the comment. If you tap and hold and use that edit, it shows the most recent. Supremely annoying.

Ex. Reply to Long swipe and bookmark to short swipe. The gestures change but reply now has a green background and bookmark is blue.

    Adjust Text Size

It looks like this is probably in the works since the Use System Text Size option doesn’t do anything currently but just in case it isn’t I’d like the option to increase text size from the system default.
