What gives you hope to keep going?
  • When national politics goes to hell, think about your local community. If you and many of the people around you can do okay in your lives, that's not so bad.

Another thing is to consider the comparison point. How are you doing compared with the average person living in Mali or Vietnam or Switzerland? Billions of people all over the world survive in situations that are definitely not ideal, and many of them are happy with their lives some of the time.

  • Conservative parent is sad his daughters aren't coming for thanksgiving after voting for Trump
  • I'm not that poster, but if you want a policy that Republicans have endorsed that's not explicitly hateful, please consider tax cuts for the rich. Yes, the net effect is bad, but the stated motivation and I think the honest motivation is not one of malice towards the poor.

It is true that down the road Republicans will complain about the budget, so they will use their tax cuts for the rich as an excuse to try to cut benefits for the poor, but it doesn't mean that when they cut taxes now it's intentionally malicious. Many of them are just trying to get more money or give more money to their friends.

  • Conservative parent is sad his daughters aren't coming for thanksgiving after voting for Trump
  • Your explanation is accurate, but your undercutting the importance of the statement. If you don't have the power, then you don't "let people" do anything.

Which is to say, he was contemplating being a giant a****** and pressuring them to vote the way he wanted, but he decided to use common sense, to not be a jerk, and now he's asking for a prize for doing what most of us do all the time everyday.

This doesn't make him a horrible human being, but it certainly doesn't make him a good one. In his mind, special rules apply only to him.

  • Conservative parent is sad his daughters aren't coming for thanksgiving after voting for Trump
  • Yes it is that hard. If you consider the real effects that politics has on people's lives, the direct negative consequences of laws and policies that make their lives worse, and then you ask us to ignore those and stop talking about them, maybe we'll be able to do it if we are not the direct victims. But as soon as you are the direct victim, of course you're going to speak out on it.

Here's a very simple example. One of my relatives uses a wheelchair or a walker, and they have a vehicle with handicap tags that they use to get around. The problem is, one problem is, that many polling places don't have the legally required handicap parking available. So my relative has extreme difficulty voting. That's a political problem, a political issue, that disenfranchises my relative. Should they be able to discuss it with the family? I sure hope so. But is it politically charged? Of course it is.

What you're asking, what you're expecting, is that every single victim has to shut the f****** about the bad s*** they're dealing with, just because it's connected to the government.

And look, I picked one of the mildest examples you could possibly think of. After all, my relative might be able to vote absentee, depending on the rules in their state. But there are so many more examples that are absolutely tragic, that involve lives being totally ruined. And you think those should be off limits.

  • Trump Plans Tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico That Could Cripple Trade
  • Oh the irony of the times pointing out drawbacks to his policies now, when they had the entire previous year to do so. Sadly, even now they are still dishonest. Trump is going to threaten tariffs and impose them on some companies, and then get rid of them for his friends and political allies. Everyone knows this, if they're paying any attention.

  • Women and LGBTQ+ people take up guns after Trump’s win: ‘We need to protect ourselves’
  • I like how your comment is the perfect example of the behavior that you claim to oppose. You're cutting into the left while identifying yourself as left, and everything you wrote was destructive. Congratulations?

There are several reasonable positions that a person could take on this issue. You could point out the entertainment in increased calls for gun regulation. You could point out the consistency with saying that you're going to arm yourself as long as guns are legal, but also be in favor of increased gun regulation. You could point out that there are different factions within the Democratic party and on the left in general, and how people all have their own varying agendas. You could encourage a general strategy for Democrats and Democrat supporters to get along. But you did none of that, because you didn't care. And I don't mind if you care, but I want other people to see it, just in case they do.

  • Let people just use what they want, okay? It's their choice.
  • Well that's not true at all. I don't think most of us are going on social media to communicate with billions of people. If we can communicate with tens of thousands of people, or perhaps less than that, but those are high quality communications, that's good enough for many or most of us.

Which is to say, quality of other users, quantity of users, and quality of service are all important when trying to evaluate the overall quality of any social media provider.

Of course your goal could be different if all you want is exposure. If you want to advertise, then large numbers of users might be your priority. But most of us are not doing that.

  • Would Kamala Harris have won the 2024 election if Latinos didn't shift hard to the right?
  • Please be careful whenever you ask these questions. It's so easy to blame one single minority group for a widespread failure. Of course analysis of individual voting groups is legitimate, as long as you properly frame what you're doing.

This is a serious issue both because of the connection with racism (i.e., it's the Latinos' fault) and abdication of responsibility (i.e., we bear no responsibility).

  • How are Americans supposed to survive the next 30 years?
  • First you look at other countries around the world. Then you see that lots of people somehow eke out OK livings despite horrible shit in government. So maybe you can too.

That's not to say the horrible things to come are acceptable. Rather, you're probably more capable than you believe. Believe in examples of billions around the globe.

    Interesting titles

Can you think of any titles from real journal articles or essays that are eye-catching?

I'm writing a document for high school students taking an English writing class, and rather than create my own examples, why not use real ones? Several of my students have expressed frustration, and I have some guidelines and brainstorming tools, but what I don't have are two dozen neat examples.
