Senators Say TSA’s Facial Recognition Program Is Out of Control | You can opt out of facial recognition at airports, for now, but the TSA wants to make the invasive technology a requirement
  • I opt out aggressively, but they make it so hard. Once I even approached the agent and the camera was directly already in my face, so I hold my hand up to try to block it and say, “I don’t want this,” but apparently they had already gotten my image before I blocked the camera and the TSA agent said “well, you’re verified.” So much for opting out.

Another time, I was going on an international flight. At the gate, the airline is scanning everyone’s face. I quickly searched the internet about it and found some Reddit post indicating it’s not mandatory at all, but sure enough they’re treating it like it is. When I get to the front, I tell the guy, “I’m not doing this.” And he says “Well, it’s the only way to get on the plane!” I continue to protest citing their privacy policy, which I had learned about moments before. He kinda scoffs and waves me over the to gate desk.

I walk past him and to the gate lady, she checks my passport and hands me a paper boarding pass. I already had a boarding pass on my phone, but ok. Well, then I walk past the guy who was scanning faces to board the plane and he doesn’t pay any attention to me. I realize then that I could’ve skipped talking to the gate agent all together and just boarded. Wow, these biometrics are so secure! That said, everyone else in line just did as they were asked like a bunch of sheep, some even smiling for the camera while their biometrics were harvested.

  • Trudeau opposes allowing Russia to keep ‘an inch’ of Ukrainian territory
  • Someone posted an image of a squad of Ukrainian soldiers overlayed with their pre-war civilian jobs. They were all in tech, software engineers, data science, etc, etc.

If they have some special skills creating missile or drone software, or in cyber warfare — sure they can fight that way. But, it sounds like the front line needs reinforcements badly and these guys ought to at least step up for their country instead of hiding out abroad.

  • Trudeau opposes allowing Russia to keep ‘an inch’ of Ukrainian territory
  • I agree. I hope Ukrainians abroad step up and go back to defend their country. Working in the technology industry I know there are many Ukrainian men who have left and hold jobs at technology companies. It’s time to go back and fight.

  • Which cologne smells so good on a man?
  • You gotta figure it out. Go find a company that appeals to you and order a sampler pack. Try the samples one day at a time until you find the one that is you. I like this approach better than going to some store counter because you can take your time. After smelling one or two colognes, it’s very hard to be able to appreciate others, so ordering the sampler packs gives you time to decide.

Few of my colleagues like Alexandria Fragrances. I’ve had luck with Guy Fox. Both have sampler packs. It’s literally a rabbit hole of choices. One of my colleagues spends thousands of dollars on rare perfumes.

  • hmmm
  • I saw a video on YouTube where a guy did plug a male to male in and guess what, nothing happened. He went on to explain that most outlets have a safety mechanism for this scenario built-in.

  • Haircut Adventure
  • I use great clips, just login with the phone number though. They don’t really spam you. You might get one marketing text, but its something you can opt out of by replying STOP.

  • Analysis: Some of Trump’s largest gains came in highly-educated counties
  • Yeah or focusing on “STEM” as if it’s the only thing that matters. People think that because they can solve technical problems that they can also solve society’s problems without any further education on the matters. The best example of this is Elon Musk.

  • Why is no one talking about how unproductive it is to have verify every "hallucination" ChatGPT gives you?

Feedback welcome for first build -- interested in linux gaming

It's my first time building a computer. I also haven't really done much PC gaming in the past 15 years, except on my Steam Deck. Actually, it is the Steam Deck that has convinced me to invest in a desktop PC with some more power. I like the Linux experience on Steam Deck and would like to stick with that if possible. I haven't used Windows in 15 years either, as I tend to use Mac OS and a bit of Linux for personal and work. Windows seems to just get worse and worse and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

In any case, I went with an AMD CPU because I've heard about Intel's recent corrosion issues. And, chose an NVidia GPU since I'd like to take advantage of ray tracing. I've heard the driver support can be a bit mixed on Linux, but I'm open to trying to make it work unless folks think it really is terrible. Any feedback is helpful.

What makes the average Lemmy user smarter than the rest of the population?

I’m always surprised by the quality of comments on Lemmy and the analysis provided, often by experts in their field. It gives a sense that the average Lemmy user is a lot smarter than the average member of the public.

Also, when it comes to politics, I think the average Lemmy user is pretty perceptive of what real power dynamics are at play and what interests society should be looking to promote.

It's been a pleasure to be on this platform with you all. Where do you all come from? And why is it so hard to find people like you in the real world?

Anyone shop on Temu? What are your best finds?

There can be a lot of junk on Temu admittedly, but it’s kind of fun to find a few deals.

Found a pair of Leatherman Raptor shears ($99 USD) for $12

Also found a Benchmade Follow Up Fixed Blade ($120 USD) for $16

Bought a drone for $15. It’s not high quality, but it’s a drone, for $15. Fun to mess around and learn with.

Anyone else find some deals? Or, got another suggestion besides Temu?
