John Oliver slams Democrats who think transgender people lost them the election
  • well lets see you had at least 20mil that just didn't bother voting, you had another nearly 10mil that voted for trump because they're idiots who are easily convinced that some how trump would back Palestine and then you had an overal campaign that was more focused on turning red to blue as opposed to motivating it's lazy and complacent base to simply turn up and vote....

but sure, lets blame the trans people.

  • How could we convince Reddit subs to move over to Lemmy?
  • can't. the ones that are still there wouldn't understand how to use lemmy and the fediverse and they'll just bash for the same reasons that bsky users bash mastodon. They want things to "just work" out of the box and are too lazy to figure things out.

  • 10-year-old walks alone a mile away from Georgia home, leading to his mother's arrest
  • I mean when I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s on weekends my parents generally had no clue where I was as long as I was home by dinner. and if I wasn't going to be home by dinner then to call and say so. payphones were everywhere, just call and let them know.

I mean hell I remember one time my friends and I were in some store a good 5 miles away from home and my parents happened to be shopping there at the same time. my mom comes up to me and says "I saw a tshirt you might like, do you want it?" and showed me the shirt and I said sure and that was it "see you later tonight".

  • People outside the US, how do you feel US expats or exiles would do in your country or region?
  • Canadian Here. prior to the election? we'd be welcoming. now? there seems to be a general sense of "we don't what that idiocy here" the right-wing cons of Canada would likely embrace Americans but the general consensus with my friends and family is that Americans are now considered morons (left and right leaning).

  • Bluesky Might End Up Defeating Twitter Once and for All
  • happens on every "new" social media platform that is similar to another social media platform. Was all over Lemmy when people were "boycotting" reddit...course most went right back to reddit when the boycotting was over.

  • not round nor rainbow colored.

Stuck in the middle with you
  • My dad can write DOS commands better than most people my age can and I work in Tech. beyond that? he's clueless. Younger generations can either type with their thumbs or their index fingers and know absolutely nothing about how things work. If it's an app they can open on their phones or tablet devices then perfect, they're all over it. Beyond that? no way.

People my age and from my generation can type well, can figure things out and fix issues on computers, and know our way around tech. Why? cause we were raised in an age where things were essentially "kicking off". I was taught typing in high school. Beyond that most of us used AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, mIRC, etc so if we weren't taught it in high school we learned it that way.

We learned html, php, javascript, etc via Geocities, setting up PHP messageboards, hell even just customizing our Myspace page. younger generations don't have anything like that so they don't know it. We learned it in our free time to customize our online experience. We had daily consistent shows like The ScreenSavers or Call for Help to teach us how to use Windows or even introduce us to Linux. I learned to build my first PC thanks to Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton. countless magazines and books to pick up to read how to do stuff. And in those days if you wanted to game on PC you pretty much had to build your own PC. No one made prebuilt custom gaming pcs. So you had to learn that stuff.

Today things are all prebuilt for you. gaming pcs, phones and tablet apps, etc. People today just want things to "just work" and if there's anything needed beyond opening an app and logining in then they're not interested. Finding and signing up for instances? forget it.

  • EA Anti-Cheat arrives for Battlefield 1 breaking it on Steam Deck / Linux
  • Honestly Valve needs to have a policy for this. If a game that once worked on Steamdeck and now no longer works after publisher intervention then refunds need to be issued. I have BF2042, BFV and BF1 and 1 was the LAST one I could still play on Linux. Now I have 3 digital paperweights that I can't play anymore. I want my money back.

  • Companies are finding new ways to monetize personal data, too often without proper notice or consent. ICYMI, three current examples that you may want to act on to opt out: PayPal, LinkedIn and 23andMe
  • honestly the ONLY reason I'm still on Linkedin is the entertainment value. Threads by game devs are just...wild. just that ONE specific group provides a great hearty chuckle in the morning without insanely idiotic they are.

You want to read threads by individuals who think they float on water, their shit don't stink, and each one is a personal jesus and then fight with each other over it? go read threads by game devs on linkedin.

  • Reddit says it is not covered by new Online Safety Code as it has moved its jurisdiction to the Netherlands
  • same with me and /r/Toronto got banned for stating a long dead prime minister was horrible to indigenous people. they used the excuse that I was submitting too many articles about crimes in the city as that subreddit's mods automatically remove any content about crime or pro Palestinian content.

Post god knows how many photos of the CN tower, the fucking sun setting or snow...hey that's great! anything that's news worthy and potentially paints the city in a bad light? nope, censored. It's so bad that i'm convinced the mods there are being paid under the table by the City.

  • Former WWE writers allege hostile, abusive workplace under Vince McMahon.
  • I feel for like the average wrestling fan that follows multiple promotions this has been known for literal decades. Just countless stories of writers or production staff or talent that have all said that place was incredibly hostile. Hell even Freddie Prinze Jr worked there as a writer for a bit and even he got treated like shit. There were dudes who used to take shits in other peoples bags. they literally had fights on planes in mid air. All of this McMahon embraced and encouraged.

  • X's idiocy is doing wonders for Bluesky.
  • Mastodon is fantastic for niche things. For example myself and my colleagues use it for work stuff and I also use it with a few friends for gaming. that's it. Beyond that if you're going to Mastodon to reach a lot of people and chase clout or what have you you're gonna have a bad time. you'll just be shouting to the void in many cases. I also use it to connect with people using linux for help and suggestions.

But just read feeds on Bluesky and you'll see many people, probably the vast majority, just say they want something that "just works" and them trying to use Mastodon was too difficult. They didn't understand the instances and what have you. It's a generation that's been raised on downloading an app, tapping on it, and it works. Login with your google, facebook, or apple id...that's it.

People these days simply don't want to do too much to use something. they don't want to customize their online experience like we used to do years ago. If it doesn't instantly "work" right out of the box, they won't use it. And even regardless of how much they'll complain about using it and all it's bugs and foibles (X/Twitter, Windows 11, etc) they'll continue to use it cause, again, "it just works".
